Daredevil: The Thread Without Fear!

We gotta keep this thread alive.

Yeah, Daredevil vs. Kingpin has got to be one of the greatest rivalries in superhero comics. It’s nice that after all these years of writers living under Frank Miller’s shadow, Brubaker can still come up with a new spin on their relationship.

I was just thinking about some of the superheroes who have really fantastic rogues galleries, and I think one thread that they all have in common is that each superhero has at least two upper tier supervillains. One of them is the villain who shares some history with the hero. They have a complicated relationship, and somehow their fates will always be connected. The other is the villain who is just bonded with the hero through intense mutual hatred. They have a simple relationship, and every encounter they share just leaves them both filled with more and more pain and hate for each other.

Like with Daredevil, I’d say Kingpin is the guy whose history (and probable destiny) is somehow intertwined with Daredevil’s. And Bullseye is obviously the guy who is just united with Daredevil through their immense hatred for one another. And, y’know, say, Batman has Two-Face and the Joker. Spidey’s got Norman Osborn and Doc Ock. Flash has Captain Cold and, uh, dunno, Gorilla Grodd? Don’t know what the hell I’m talking about now.

Anyway, I’m almost kind of disappointed Bullseye is in Thunderbolts… After that first storyarc, Brubaker didn’t really play with him. It would have been interesting to see what Brubaker would have added to the Bullseye/Daredevil mythos. I’m just glad Bullseye has been used well in Thunderbolts. And I’m glad Brubaker beefed up the rest of Daredevil’s villains gallery and gave 'em a chance to shine.

I like Andy Diggle. Have you read The Losers? That’s some pretty great comics right there. I didn’t think his Swamp Thing sucked, but now that I’m trying to remember it… I’m finding it kind of forgettable. I got his run for super cheap, though, which is probably why trying to think of it fills me with fondness.

Tom Raney probably doesn’t really suck. I just can’t stand his artwork. I can’t really explain it… Something about it aesthetically just doesn’t jibe with my sensibilities, so I can’t stand it. Also, and I think I mentioned this in one of the other threads a few days ago, I’m completely biased against artists named Tom. Tom Raney, Tom Grummet, Tom Derenick, Tom Fowler… I cannot stand any of those dudes’ art. Not saying that I want them to go out of work and starve, but when I was a kid I was probably just beat up a lot by a bully named Tom.

D.Reapy - Where did it say that Chris Bachalo is gonna be Diggle’s artist? I didn’t see that mentioned in your interview link.

It was just an April’s Fools Joke. Can ou imagine Bachelo’s cartoony exaggerated artwork after Maleev and Lark? LOL

Oh, and I think for Superman that would be Brainiac, who have a relationship from waaaay back to shrinking Kandor, and Luthor who just plains hates Supes.

April Fools’… Psht. You got me excited for a bit there. Dammit!

I actually would be interested in Bachalo drawing Daredevil. He’s always been one of my favorite artists, and even though his style has evolved from his pre-Maleev, pre-Lark Shade, The Changing Man days I think he’d be a really interesting choice on Daredevil. The sequence he did for Bendis in the anniversary issue was exceptional.

Word.

In my opinion, DD doesn’t have the elite rogue’s gallery that he deserves. The relationship he has with Kingpin and Bullseye is incredible, but I hope the next writer can help improve his other rogues in the way Brubaker did with say Mr. Fear, who I’d never even heard of until Brubaker made him badass. Some guys like Stilt-Man, Leap-Frog, and the Jester should be forgotten, but I think some characters such as the Purple Man still hold untapped potential.

Any opinions on DD#117?

Lady Bullseye? Are you kidding me? What kind of name is that someone? That sounds like a DC character. Thought Brubaker was better than that. I guess not.

Well at least it’s not as bad as Miss Sinister.

Bullseye ojousama…

  1. She’s much more than her name makes her appear. At first, I was like “Oh boy, a female Bullseye. How original.” But she actually has a cool backstory and she’s a pretty interesting character. Plus, she’s makes for a really fun story arc

  2. Holy shit, you’re unbanned AGAIN? What have you been doing with yourself besides studying stats?

Daredevil 118 was a fine comic. Apparently the next issue doesn’t come out until late June. Boo-hoo.

I wonder what ever happen to Daredevil’s new old costume that he wore during the Tree of Knowledge and Fall from Grace storyline. I liked it. It had the grey and the red and offered much better protection than the red suit. Even the billy club that came with it was pretty cool. It could turn into a bo staff or nunchukus. They should have at least kept that around.

Pic of costume sort-of

i fucking loved that costume
was very happy that it was used in his overpower card

anyone remember overpower? =(

:woot: I do. Overpower was pretty cool back in the 90’s. Contrary to popular belief the 90’s weren’t all bad for Marvel Comics.

That costume was really underrated. It’s too bad that the hardline comic purists wanted nothing to do with it. “Anything that isn’t classic is automatically bad”. I swear I hate comic fans sometimes.

Didn’t you complain about new covers, albeit wonderfully drawn, have nothing to do with the interior like classic ones did? Haha

I disagree completely with the bolded. I prefer good covers over bad covers. Classic vs. Modern has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Silly me. I could swore that this was the Daredevil thread. Do you have anything to say about Daredevil?

you cannot compare old stuff to something like granov and djurdevic, you are ridiculous
sure they were colorful and fun, but the quality is bs compared to most things nowadays

and to answer your question, even daredevil could see you are banned again, HEY-OOOOO

Are you all serious right now? The armored DD costume was fucking terrible. D.G. Chichester even admitted it was a gimmick to “put the spotlight back on DD” because “DD was being hugely ignored by Marvel.” If that isn’t an awful reason to fuck with a classic, I don’t know what is.

i like armor

Yeah, I like armor too…on Iron Man or something, DD is the fucking Man Without Fear for christ’s sake. He’s supposed to be acrobatic, elegant, and graceful, how can you be any of those things with clunky, “razor-pads” hindering your movement? So essentially, Scott McDaniel can design a better DD costume than Wally Wood any day, right? I’d like to know how Zeph’ feels about Armored DD.

zeph is more pure than mother theresa
he will despise it

in all honesty, it was cool for a bit, and i guess i liked it when i was in jr high, but it would not fit at all with anything in the past 8 years of daredevil for sure haha

btw, just got a dd 181 9.8, i like it because i dont like greeks

I still haven’t read the past two issues. I’m not gonna return to this thread until I do. I saw someone mention something about “armor” and I blacked out momentarily.

That’s the spirit.

Does anyone want to discuss the latest events of DD #118? Or, has anyone been reading DD Noir for that matter? Issue #2 was out this week and its sort of a slow-paced flash-back tale, but I’m enjoying it none-the-less. Although, I’m not exactly sold on the idea of Nelson being a PI with Murdock as his assistant. Maybe its just me being a stubborn fan, but its just not very believable. However, to be fair Nelson has had very little screen time, and its been much more focused on DD in action. Any thoughts? For christ’s sake Zeph’ read #117-118!
