Dan Strategies and Match-ups

According to the SFIV Prima guide his ultra does in fact have only one frame of start up.

But that frame of startup is before the flash. IE I don’t think that you can do this in reaction, literally.

It took my a bunch of tries but I managed to do it once where Zangief input his first and then I did Dan’s during Geif’s animation. So while it is a pain in the ass to do it will really piss off the Geif player if you manage it. And if your standing on the ground what else are you gonna do against it anyway?

Neo’s vid here shows Dan’s ultra against a whole bunch of supers and ultras. (Zangief’s not included)

I was messing around with Dan’s Ultra vs. Ryu’s Ultra in practice mode…and also found that you can EX-DP out of Ryu’s Ultra as well. Maybe this is common knowledge for all shoto characters. Far away it acts as a way of getting out of block damage (although you probably have just as much time for simply jumping over it). Close up it will actually knock Ryu down and get you out of the FB’s path at the same time. Execution timing is the same for beating it with an Ultra (f, df just before screen snaps back to normal, P+P). Regular DP won’t escape the ultra though. shrug I thought it was kind of interesting.

More match up advice! I’m losing BP left and right trying to play with Dan.

Actually, I am currently making a list of what Dan can do to punish any random Super or Ultra. Since my 360 has ROD and I don’t have any money to spend to get it fixed, I am doing it on my older brother’s 360, so it’ll take a while. At the moment, I did Fei Long, Cammy, Akuma, Gouken and Dhalsim, although Akuma isn’t complete since I also have to find a way for him to enter his ultra input while getting up (I’ll probably ask my brother to help me out).

Should I post the first results ? Y/N

Just record in practice mode.

That’s what I usually do, but with Akuma, my brother doing the Super/Ultra input on wakeup will be easier than knocking down the dummy at the exact right moment for it to do the Super/Ultra input while getting up. Yes, I suck at timing (another reason why doing this will take a while, I’ll have to try everything a lot of times to get the timing down).

(If you were talking about recording a video, I can’t. No capture card, no video camera, no money.)

Will Dan ever get the love he deserves?

I’m having an extremely difficult time vs Chun-Li.
She out zones, out pokes, and out footsies me
and lk Danku misses pretty often on a crouching Chun-Li, so it’s difficult to get pressure on her.

Any Tips?

I got you on this one my friend. It’s Cy. Anyways, what I do is stay close , or mid range at best to her. You need to use your epic fireball to close distance, and FADC in there with mk, and low mk as your pokes to keep chun at bay. Thsi match use a lot of playing hit and run withdan to keep chun on her feets. So, make the chun get mad, and rush yo down, and give them a big taste of the power of saikyo, or what it’s called.

Found something pretty good vs Chun.

Because her hitbox is so small when she crouches and because she rears back so far when she gets hit, it’s hard to combo or pressure with with dan kicks (they whiff or get blocked) outside of ex or c.hp xx hk danku. In case she’s crouching, it’s best to just finish combos with fp gadou.

However, because her hitbox is so small when she crouches and because she rears back so far when she gets hit, this combo works on crouching Chun Li:

j.mk, s.fp xx ex gadou -> Ultra

Does 532 (or around 60% of Chun’s damage at full bar). It’s about a 2-3 frame window. Keep this in mind whenever you can cross Chun up and she doesn’t have meter for ex sbk

any tips on beating a sagat who keeps running away? i managed to beat the guys runaway akuma but it didnt work for sagat

I only have an okay Dan, but here’s what I do. Take it with a grain of salt.

First of all, realize the matchup sucks. You have to hope Sagat makes mistakes in order for you to win. You have to be close to Sagat to win. If you let Sagat get full screen from you, it is a bitch to get back in. You can lk knee over low tiger shots. Basically, I just dash in or do a lk/mk Dan Knee to get in from midrange or counterpoke his standing roundhouse with gadouken. Don’t jump in like a moron, dash or walk in. Once you’re in close, cross him up and just in general be Dan.

Don’t try to focus his fireballs, they’re too fast to do that.

nice, thanks for the tips man

You should try to find more general combos for this, sounds pretty hot.

You can also FADC f >> S. HP xx HK danku after the EX gadou, or c.lk tick throw if it’s blocked.

If you’re willing to risk pretty much losing the round, you can try to point blank ultra on her wakeup when she has meter for EX SBK. I’ve only been ballsy enough to try it twice, but both times, it worked. Wakeup SBK SAIIIIIKYOOOO.

However, this matchup is still straight balls if she keeps you around footsie range. I gotta get in to win, and that’s the hard part.

:woot:

Just watch her do ex sbk and punish with ultra, it’s pretty easy regardless of whether you block it or don’t even get touched by it.

Blah with Chun I have noticed they like to do sbk on wake up if u love to cross them up but u should try do a meaty with hp gaduken(if she dosent have ultra duh) depending on what she dose u could either danku, ultra or poke her. Also when they want to go into the offesive they mostly do mix up with assumption(u know her special move that is a overhead) do a FA and do whatever u desire. BTW when she has bar u should do a super taunt jump everytime u do a knockdown since she is a charge char she will either lose charge or trow a spb on wake up that way u counter her accordantly. PS If u do this be certain that u will recover first than her and u are a safe distance.

Also, a jumping short timed a little late will beat ex sbk where Dan’s toe just touches her when the sbk is starting.

No prob.

s.fp xx ex gadou -> Ultra seems to work on crouching Rufus, too! Comes very close to working on Vega and Fuerte; need to do some more testing.

c.mk xx ex gadou -> Ultra works on crouching Honda, but outside the corner, it’s very space-dependent. Can’t be too close, but can’t be too far away, either.
