Hi, I’m tempted about owning a hitbox (the stickless arcade stick), but I’d like it to be custom. i’ve already made a custom stick using a ps2 controller pcb and made the case out of wood. It was fun, it works great, but I’m not a stick guy. I prefer buttons and when I discovered the hitbox it was a revelation, this thing was thought for me. Unfortunately I live outside US and it’s really expensive to order one. So I’d like to make mine.
The fact is that’s I’m ok with soldering, but to be honest, I’d like it to look better than my own custom stick (not that it looks bad) I’d like one of these wonderful sticks with artworks, easily modable and so on.
What kind of pcb should I use?(if possible compatible with both pc and ps3) (I’m not sure ps2 ones would support two opposed directions to be pressed at the same time, I heard hitboxes had problems with this in the past), what case should i use? (so I can put the buttons where I want AND having a replaceable art, where can I print one?). I’m not sure where people find those custom plastic top)
All advices are welcome.
Sorry, I’m not used tot his forum yet. I’d be glad if some moderator could put it the right place.
So far I have made one out of a TE and an SE. What PCB depends on what other bells and whistles you want. Also what you have to spend.
I’m actually making one myself as well. I’m using a PS2 PCB like your old stick and using a PS2 -> 360/PS3 adapter and an old wired 360 PCB as the piggy back that most of these adapters require. All of this is going inside the box, and, on the outside, I’m going to have USB port which is actually a gender changer with one side exposed and the other side connected to the USB part of the adapter. This will make the the USB cable I’m using detachable so I can wrap it up separately from the box. Maybe make a little compartment for it.
If you’re worried about how opposite directions will act, this is a great little tool you can add between the PCB and the directional buttons: http://www.shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?threads/socd-cleaner-kit-now-available.148881/ Link to the store is in the OP’s sig. It works by making L+R act as neutral and you have to option to make either U+D=U or = neutral.
The strange part about this is that I’m going super cheap and using a relatively strong cardboard box as the housing lol. I also used 30mm buttons instead of the 25mm ones Hitboxes usually have for the attack buttons because I got them from free from my friend. SUUUUPER cheap haha
Anything from http://www.godlikecontrols.com/ will work fantastic for PS3/PC on a hit BOX layout. Remember that it’s important to get the SOCD cleaning on your custom build. The PC/PS3 Cthulhu has that firmware built directly into the board! That way left + right ='s neutral and down + up ='s up. That will be a feature you do not find on most everything else.
It was my understanding that only the HitBox PS3 Cthulhu had the custom SOCD cleaning firmware and is not available on regular models sold by Toodles. He’ll still need to get the SOCD cleaner.
This scod cleaner is what prevents directions from conflicting with each other so?
So If I buy a chtulhu pcb+the scod cleaner I’ve got all I need to start my custom hitbox then.
Does someone know where I can find some tutorial to use them properly? Or is it explained in the product papers?
It seems the scod cleaner comes unassembled.
Next I’ll just have to order some sanwa buttons (24mm is what official hitboxes use +30mm for the jump one), find a case.
The only thing i’m not sure about is about the plastic cover for the artwork.
The MC Cthulhu has the socd.
Really? That would be great!
