You make a lot of sense. The notation argument doesn’t seem that relevant to skullgirls; I haven’t seen many people bring it up as a reason not to participate in the scene. However, in general if we’re going to get more people involved in the game we should be looking for ways to make it easy for them to learn, exciting to watch, fun to play. As opposed to putting up barriers to entry such as “learn such and such if you want to be involved/get better.”
I think the patch will help this to a degree, as will the constant levelling up of players. One of the guys I play regularly online (there’s unfortunately only a couple) has been really fun to play with as he gets better and comes up with insane resets to keep me on my toes. Neither of us go for super long death combos, despite the fact that he plays valentine, so I think once those combos are not possible, that style of play will become more and more common at majors. The fun is in the footsies, dealing with assists that could be doing literally anything, and defending the ridiculous resets.
It does go both ways, but at this point is more about a language. QCF is English and number notation is Spanish (or whatever). I already know English, and I guess I could learn Spanish so I could play your game, but… can’t you just translate for me? Of course the effort that goes into learning a new notation is significantly less than a language, but my point is that neither system is better than the other, it’s just about ease of communication. Even being familiar with number notation in the brief time I spent with Blazblue, I still have to do a double-take when I hear announcers talk about 5A in Marvel. “Wow, what a nice 2C that was!” My brain goes into full translation mode and I miss 5 seconds of the action, lol.
You’re right that people will look to other bs excuses, though.
In general, it’s difficult to get new people to play your game if all you tell them is to stop being lazy and learn. The best way is to convince them that your game is so awesome that they have no choice but to learn it, because they’ll be having so much more fun with your game than with any other use of their time. This is, of course, a subjective measure and sometimes there’s no amount of convincing you can do, but all you can do is try. Telling people to shut up and learn a REAL game isn’t gonna convince anybody.
the notation “argument” was just an example towards something else. the argument sidetracked everything which is why i stopped responding to it.
that having been said, i dont really see how it could be an argument since SG on on srk doesnt even use number notation and even on dustloop in the painwheel forums at least they dont use number notation, though some do and some dont.
as far as how i see it, i believe in the when in rome doctrine as well… except that i probably wont be in rome if i dont like what the romans do. neither will other people for that matter. you go to a party and see drugs being used? not your scene? you’re probably going to leave… not do an intervention. thats how i treat most things in life… i either like them… or i do not.
as far as using number notation as an excuse to not play a game… maybe… i just always found it annoying, not a deal breaker in and of itself but definitely a part of it if i were aleady on the ropes of dropping something. (i was on the “ropes” of dropping sf4 for… years, it was only when seth, viper and divekickers came along and became popular that i finally had a valid enough reason (for myself) to kick the habit)
anywho i agree with dans student, and some of the other posters… something about this game gets boring quickly… perhaps its double assist. perhaps its a small roster, perhaps its lack of a variety of human opponents to play against (biggest one for me) perhaps its that it brings nothing new to the table…
i dont know but i felt a very noticeable disconnect with the game about a week ago and i just didnt want to t-mode, didnt really want to play, didnt want to fantasize about SG theoryfighter… perhaps its cause i know that i wont be able to play it consistently for a LOOONG time… (work upped my hours 3 fold… literally working a 70 hour work week for the next 4 months to a year…)
idk something has taken away my motivation to learn this game, i hope it goes away, sucks feeling indifferent toward t-mode.
It’s pretty simple, really. If you have a niche game you like and you are having fun and don’t care about growing a community of players for it, you can afford to tell people to do their homework or GTFO. If you want to grow a community, you need to make it attractive to pick up the game. People don’t decide to pick up a game solely on the merits of the game itself. The “opportunity cost” of learning it is an extremely important consideration. All the time learning the notations, terminology and other aspects of a new game is time spent not having fun, and having fun is the main point of playing any game in the first place.
It’s not “stupid” or “lazy” to not pick up a game because you don’t understand the notations and aren’t interested in learning. If your interest in a game is not too deep, it is simply the most logical decision to play a different game where you would be having fun immediately, as opposed to buckling down and working towards the possibility of having fun in the future.
I once asked on Dustloop how to read number notation. Someone said “look down at your numpad”. Tadaa, I knew how to read number notation. I think the entire exchange was 35 seconds. Difficult stuff.
This thread is less about the status of the scene and more about how horribly fickle and hard pressed some people are to actually continue working on building a scene with something they enjoy playing.
To be blunt about the entire situation: There is no Skullgirls ‘scene’ but there is a Skullgirls community.
You do not get a scene in two months. You won’t get it in six months either.
The nerf really needed to happen tbh, there was just too much damage and it would have made the game boring to watch after a few months. After the patch, you can be more creative with reset setups instead, resets will be even better with the speed increase.
lol, like my brother with the transition of ssf4 to ssf4ae, the little changes that capcom made to dictator killed his interest on the sf4 series entirely, or me with how netherrealm killed the mixup game of smoke and ermac killing my need to play the game religiously like i used to at the begining of the lifespan of it
… You’re referring to a controller/joystick notation which is used to play video games. Fellow people from college that do not play games would have no clue what 256H is or w/e that shit is.
Yeah these are pretty much the biggest reasons I hear from talking to people who I know. I think it was really questionable to release the game the way it is and with this art style, but I do like the art style and characters so it doesn’t affect me personally, and Mike Z doesn’t really seem to want to cater to what would sell so I respect that. Alex Ahad is also a really good artist and I think the game looks great, just it’s maybe not very marketable for a competitive fighting game.
The secondary reasons I hear are Double assist and the combo length, things that really should have been fixed pre-release. You don’t have to be a genius to see that these were going to at very least turn people off regardless of how much meter a ToD combo gives your opponent, and calculating combo length is simply a matter of stepping into training mode with any character besides Filia and counting the number of ways to start a loop, but whatever what’s done is done.
Really though I probably wouldn’t be playing this game if I didn’t like the characters, and that’s a huge edge Marvel has over this game. Playing Dante or Wolverine appeals to the masses a lot better than playing random jiggly characters in an art style they probably hate.
Fellow people from college should have the research skills to google that shit. Hell I figured out number notation when I was in High School by looking for the information on the internet.
im pretty sure that the only reason why here on srk they decided to use Round House, Fierce, Strong, etc, instead of LP, MP, HP, etc is just to piss me off
Why use them? this just confuses new comers. People like things that are easy to understand and not having to read goofy numbers, i.e Maximillian he gets alot of new players and he doesn’t use alot of technical mumbo jumbo talk
