Current State of the Skullgirls Scene

but does it have to be"groundbreaking" to attract fans or even your occasional video game taste tester?

In Ireland, we have about 3-4 people that are interested in it but it doesn’t really get much play.

I’m not sure Girly and I are in quite the same position, but Vancouver is a very Marvel and SF4 centric town, from the events I’ve been to. I feel like GGPO is a step in the right direction for bridging the community in areas where local players are thin on the ground. SC5 is a pretty good example (in my opinion) of this. I have virtually no one to play it with locally, but due to the accessibility of its online play, I can still Nightmare erry day.

Any sort of feature that can easily bring together as many people online as possible (Lobbies are the first thing to come to mind, even though there are issues with GGPO netcode and lobbies, allegedly), feels like it would be great for giving the people who play online the most rewarding experience possible and keep the competition available.

Until then, I guess just make as much time for those 3-4 people as possible!

I’m heading out to a local casual sessions in a few hours and there should be some SG play so hopefully it’ll stick :stuck_out_tongue:

Yo, QETZL, I don’t know who you are but I suddenly started to like you! ^________________^

Except for the ones already underwater.

i definately agree that during streams etc there should be someone on the mic who actually knows what is going on. i dont even know why people would volunteer to commentate on a game that they know little/ care little about. it is only harmful to the game and getting new players into the games as well. i think it is getting better now that people are more familiar with the game but we can all say some of the stuff said during some SG commentary has been rage worthy.

i agree with what quetzel said in that S kill is a very good commentator, in that he brings knowledge to the commentary as well (although my faves have to be UltraChen) and is not just yelling obscenities the whole time (like seriously that is all some commentators have tbh, which is only funny if you are say 12) look at professional sports commentating, which i know is a league away from what we get at big events, but i doubt sports commmentary was EVER like some of the shit we have to put up with, a bunch of man babies yelling and screaming or having a conversation with other people off screen etc etc. id rather have no commentary than some dipshit who just wants to listen to his own voice for no reason (and i often mute streams/vids because of this).

bottom line is, if you are ever at a stream and some eegit is misrepresenting the game, fucking slap his ass off that chair for all of our sanities.

Liked for being a clever turn of phrase, but damn that’s a dark sentiment.

Getting on the mic for commentary is both wanting to do it (it’s kind of stressful and hard if you don’t have a performers mindset), and knowing the people running the stream (because they’re really not very likely to let someone that they either haven’t heard of as an authority or know personally on the stream they’re responsible for)

Commentary is voluntary. They’re pretty much giving up hanging with their friends to entertain the thousands of faceless people on stream.

there are about 5 of us in Vancouver who really play the game. Unfortunately (sorry to call you out QETZL) most kind of them don’t come to events or gatherings that often (due to being busy, even I am guilty of this recently), so its hard to get them all in a room together :frowning:

I know I know. I’m working on it! Had to get the Blizzard out of my system. But I’ll be there tonight so that’s at least 2/5.

Something I’ve taken note of/remembered recently from Soul Calibur:
Several people in SCV unranked have lobbies called “Twitch.tv/etcetcetc”. Some of them are around 24 hours a day! I know Lobbies aren’t in SG and they’re an issue to implement possibly, but I’d like to argue here (In the off chance Mike Z or Reverge ever graces this thread again), the potential benefit to the scene of allowing a third party to stream a game, and almost as importantly, advertise that they are doing so.

Kind of a tangent…

[details=Spoiler]To look at events in a more FG general way that could in some way be replicated/simulated with features such as this, one of the big non-tournament deals in recent AE history (Pre:2012) was the Daigo 50 man Kumite. Probably larger in Japan than here, it still brought many of the boys(1000s) to the yard to examine Daigo’s Milkshake against a string of 50 challengers (That was bad, and I apologize for making you read it).
While that has a lot to do with Daigo’s star power, it still represents a way that we can celebrate our talented players, even in times where we cannot match them together. I for one would love to be able to stream (And commentate over), someone like our very own Pali (aka HeavyJugz) as kind of a dark horse villain, taking on all challengers as a way to both showcase good SG play and also show the community at large where the bar for achievement is. It would also give interested parties more opportunities to become knowledgeable, stream-able voices for the community at large (In the interest of our own UltraChen or Juicebox/Answer or etc etc)[/details]

As more of a general thing:
-While the online of Skullgirls isn’t perfect (Nor can it be expected to be), it is a sincere and genuine effort to address some of the mountain of issues that plague a very needy genre (Not to say that we are greedy/undeserving, just highlighting that online chess takes much, much less effort to set up and frame data is irrelevant). While finding a random match can pose something of a challenge these days, like SCV and Melty, I believe a /lot/ of our success and growth will (and should) come from online play. It is a luxury that some titles (Cough, KoF and SFxT) cannot afford and thus they rely on their offline communities. I wholeheartedly believe that we here should be able to rely on each other and I’m a little heartbroken to see the lack of activity on some of the match request threads (Since I’ve been back from the dark pit of Diablo, as Girly is quick to remind me), especially when I see a lot of names on these forums, the math just doesn’t add up.

A second tangent!

Spoiler

Perhaps, it’s the nature of forum based match making? The segregation of the forum and the game itself is likely causing a disconnect, and spontaneous posting is met with a somewhat tepid response. It might be improved if there was some way of signalling on your actual profile, if you are available and willing to play? Conversely, everyone just needs to hang out in the matchmaking threads more! If nothing else, the SRK community here should all take up arms to be the playerbase

now I"m curious, which vancouver, you 2? The pretty one or the awesome-if-you-like-being-trashy one?

I imagine both of them would claim to be the pretty one? I had forgotten there are other Vancouvers.
This one.

the ‘other’ one is Vancouver, WA. They’re more… blue collar as a whole >< I ask because I grew up in Seattle and live in Portland now, I always love to be aware of other PNW’ers, even if they’re filthy Canadians.

Out of curiosity, did any of you find the CEO commentators to be particularly knowledgeable about Skullgirls?

dont confuse piracy with emulation.online play in emulation was established long before online emulated fighters.

thanks to emulation we all got to play a lot of JRPGs translated, uncensored and unreleased in the West

It just means you are not really interested in them. At least save us the BS excuses.
Ever tried to get into Tekken? On TZ they use their own lingo, which is different than Japanese BBS who use the numpad system for ANY game. If you really wanted to improve at a game, THAT will not be what’s stopping you.

Get a lobby of me, severen, omnisscythe, kenmastersx, Uri_woz, Copperdabbit and uh Discoshark too! sick peacock. I think it could show some good level play imo with a variety of all the characters. Thats like every character i think, but i don’t know any good filias.
(PSN) is who i named.

This is precisely the kind of thing I think we could use a lot more of! We’ve already got some killers and we don’t need to wait around for other people to come in and kill us at our own game. Now, given that lobby is currently out of the question, are there any alternatives or ways we could arrange matches to ensure a stream happens/is archived? I suppose it might be worth putting the question to the boards in general.
