Cross Counter TV: I don't get it

First let me just preface by saying the following:
[] While my account is new, I have been trolling SRK for many years–specifically the CvS2 and 3S sub-forums.
[
] I knew who Mike was when he was a top WC MvC2 player and when Gootecks was a top US Urien player in 3S.

Please do not assume that I am not interested in trolling. Obviously I could find a better way to do that than this thread.
With that out of the way, can some one please help me to understand why so many people like this show? While it’s fun to learn some tiny bits of info about matchups, in the end it seems to boil down to one thing:

I don’t get why that appeals to ANYONE. Basically it’s an ego boost for these players… And then they proceed to thank and give shoutouts to the viewers–AKA the same people they play against and trash talk. How can they bash people new to the game while asking them to subscribe at the same time?

Seriously, what am I missing? I value what these guys do for the community and to bring awareness to the FGC as a mainstream community, but this is beyond me.

Mike Z was a known MVC2 player, not Mike Ross.

Gootecks was ok at 3S but never top, even by american standards.

I don’t think ppl on this forum care about cross counter so maybe try asking soneplace else?

Watch it high, that MIGHT help you out.

so don’t watch it? I don’t get it either but I think all we really need to get is that they promote enthusiasm for fighting games while making a bit of scratch on the side (i assume?)

It appeals to the casual public, showing a more “human” side of the FGC.

It’s a representation of the people, that watch the show. Watching Goo and Mike in their eternal struggle, the viewer might often think “God, this happens to me too!”, while they can laugh about it since it’s not them on the receiving end for once. As those two always said, it’s a comedy show for the broader public. It’s always been like that. Also, I don’t understand what you mean by bashing/trash talking. When something like that happens, it’s usually a reply to angry rants from absolute super-scrubs.

-If it’s Excellent Adventures you talk about specifically, they do stupid shit for the sake of making things interesting and fun. Honesty about what happens on screen is optional.
-If it’s Gooplays, sometimes Gootecks tackles a new character, involving the viewers, making google spreadsheets together on the characters, ultimately helping new players with learning those and how to pace the learning process. It’s much more engaging for some, when it’s built from scratch like that, instead of when they come to SRK forums and read a whole sub-forum worth of information, not knowing where to begin.
-In his 3rd Strike videos, Goo goes more towards the educational side of his matches, actually explaining why he loses when he does, trying to be more analytical. Telling what he should have done. Giving the casuals a glimpse of how a good player should develop their mindset and identify flaws in his/her gameplay.

Basically, it’s a preference. Some people prefer to tackle the SRK threads/wiki and go full science. Some are thankful for guys like Tataki and his tutorials. Some just don’t care about it all as much yet, but still like the FGC for a reason or two, making Goo and Mike the perfect entry point.

As to why you don’t get it, it’s because you’re not the target audience anymore. You’re long past that.

Thanks for the responses and feedback, guys. I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head in that I am not the target audience and will probably never get it.

That being said, I am still not down with their attitudes towards the people they play online. If you watched Episode 37, look at how Mike treats that M. Bison player. It’s as if he is saying that the Bison player is committing a crime for trying to win against him. He even goes on to taunt and troll him (in the end he did realize that he may have over-stepped his bounds) for just getting a round off of Mike. So if I play him online am I supposed to just walk forward?

I just don’t like the idea of top players shitting on Online Warriors for no other reason than that they are playing the game to win… I remember in an early interview with gootecks during SF4 Vanilla, he said that any player who uses Ken online is a scrub. Sure, there were many Ken scrubs, but obviously there are a lot of legitimate Ken players. And even the scrubs are learning and have to start somewhere…

Don’t say that you support the community and then proceed to bash anyone who doesn’t fit into your groove.

For me I don’t watch it religiously, but some guests really help fill out the show comedy wise. KBrad is normally pretty funny, but he’s like that all the time. Max was an entertaining guest too. I still remember when he sent Alex Myers a message from Gootecks’ account asking him if he wanted to cyber on Kinect.

I only really enjoy watching it if everybody on the show is just enjoying themselves playing Street Fighter, as opposed to getting some top player that just goes in and pubstomps on xbox.

I think you have to love the stars of the show to enjoy everything they do in the show. That’s really the draw, not just their playing. They could not play at all and people would likely still watch it for them, not the game.

As for the playing, trolling and whatnot. It’s all a joke. To take it seriously as them looking down on the online community is to not understand humor or even the show. And to be perfectly honest, if I was them, I would likely do the exact same thing they are doing because it builds a character for both of them. For example, Mike having the bigger head, always thinking he is just too good where any loss there is a good excuse. Then there is gootecks who is more humble with his wins and makes less excuses when he loses outside of him admitting he played badly.

One humble, one big headed, one not so pro, the other a pro, but both funny and compliment each other. That’s the what makes the draw.

In response to this; yes, Mike overstepped his bounds. And you could see he felt bad about it. Don’t criticize a whole series for a single isolated incident though. It’s not a common occurence…

(not in this serious kind of way)

Sometimes what he saids is warranted when he come across guys like this:

http://youtu.be/KrPfZe0dAVw

Or he could just be a salty winner shrugs

I’m gonna go with Salty.

In that same video he claims that he has never popped off on anybody or called them a scrub… Which is patently untrue.

http://youtu.be/coNX9QlUNtk

At around ~24:00 in, he calls a guy who beat him a scrub… Just like he guy he complained about in that video above… In the same video he then proceeded to say that he had never done that.

Sure the player taunted, but he played to win. And yet again Mike and gootecks treated it like a crime or sin against the FGC…

We get it. You don’t like what Mike and Ryan are doing.

The thing is, wouldn’t it be better to simply just ignore them? All you’re doing right now is giving their videos more hits.

it’s really not a big deal. just for entertainment. they’re not obligated to be nice to every random online baddie lol

If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. People who like it, both hardcore and casual players, watch it for the people and humour. If you don’t get it, nobody can explain it to you. Making a thread like this and railing against it just makes you look negative because you don’t seem interested in trying to ‘get it’, more in trying to convince people the show is bad and that nobody intelligent should watch it because you don’t like it…

You know I was gonna troll but OP isn’t being terrible. So delete this post please.

I don’t think they are really making fun of online warriors as much as they are making fun of bad habits that come from playing online too much. If anything it should be enlightening for some of those players. Personally, I think it’s pretty easy to indentify the players who are putting up the work in learning matchups (even if they are limited to only playing online) from the typical flowchart online player.

Thank you for the feedback. Yeah I may have gotten a little carried away myself. And yes I am starting to get some enjoyment out of the “story” that goes on in the videos.

But I still stand by my argument that they can be hypocritical by bashing scrubs and then turn around and ask the same scrubs for subscribers.

Good day, gentlemen!

I think you’re looking into what they say a little too much. It sounds like you’re describing DSP or something with the viewer treatment.
"Thanks for the view, you fucking worthless human"
Or something of that effect, god bless DSP.

Anyway, Mike has a face on camera, he has a persona in the FGC, and I think he tries to bring it out (More so in 2014) to entertain the audience. Who doesn’t love the cage breaking lunatic Mike “The Boss” Ross. And even so, I highly doubt you’ve never called anybody a scrub after getting salty online.

What they say on the show is all in good fun, but I’ll admit Mike is slowly starting to get legit salty over some games. Still, I can’t quite see the angle of your complaint, but each to their own.

Its mostly kids from eventhubs that watch this. The same dumbasses use their moms credit card to donate hundreds of dollars to Maximilian. No one here watches that shit. You can try asking the eventscrubs kids why they like it but your comment will get deleted IMMEDIATELY.
