"Critique My Akuma!" Video Blog Thread

Thanks

Im a pad player so no plinking for me. Ive been using gouken as the training dummy and its difficult to do on him so I will try Rog to see if its easier.

I didnt want to risk that his whiffed Ultra 2 was going to push him away from me during the start up of my Ultra 2, so I TP’d a bit forward just to be sure :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, it makes sense and I kinda thought that’s why you did that. Too bad really cuz you could’ve tacked on an extra 100 damage if you would’ve landed it naked. Still, you beat him!!

I liked the fireball > Super setup, though I think it would be kinda risky had he chosen Ultra I.

Sometimes I feel stupid after watching people use demon flip kicks consistently against Zangief. I usually end up eating lariats when trying to do the same, gotta work my spacing on this.

Against noob Giefs it works great, but the better the gief the worse it becomes.

The Super setup, demon flip kicks or both?

Both. Pro Giefs will crouch at the last minute and then lariat. DevilKnight gave a good write up on it

I just stick to wakeup when using dive kicks against Gief… even mediocre ones have figured that out, it seems.

Even so, it’s not to say you can’t go aggro on him. Gief can still get a little lost trying to properly lariat both flip throws and dive kicks, especially if you are varying your dive kick timing. Trades and clean lariats are definately bad for you; but weigh up your risk:reward according to what you make of your competition.

The difference is that you can do the overhead from a safe distance away (slightly less than cr.MK) as a footsie tool, whereas if you try and walk forward or dash in for the throw, you might eat a cr.LK into combo. It also eats through focus, like fs.HK (2-hit version) but is way safer.

What I like to do is use overhead at maximum distance, and then follow it up with cr.MK, cr.HP (don’t do the cr.HP if your opponent doesn’t jump-in).

I find that this works pretty well because the overhead is kinda like a slap in the face and aggravates them - and in response they will usually either stand block (get hit by cr.MK; don’t follow up with fireball, it won’t connect), or jump-in (you recover from the cr.MK fast enough to throw a cr.HP to hit them, and you can then cancel into meaty demon flip dive kick to stuff their SRK).

An SRK will easily beat the cr.MK after the overhead, but in practice I find that most people do not mash out the SRK in anticipation. I’ve gotten hit by the mashed SRK maybe one times out of 20.

(I secretly call this the Kirby slap because it’s one of the few things I didn’t copy from watching pro videos. In fact I’ve never seen it used ever, though I could be wrong… or it could just be that people know about it, but don’t use it because it’s not effective.)

I used the first match as a demo of an idea I had.

Let me know if you guys like it.

LoyalSol that Pilot episode was awesome for noobs like me! Keep them coming no matter who are the players are!

I’m a long time Boxer-only player to have picked up Akuma couple of days ago (going from 0 to WOW on wakeup mixups). I’m not even decent with him so if you just point out some main general errors I did during the matches (besides my many failed air-tatsus lol).

P.S. audio is the teamspooky livestream of AE in CF which I was listening to in the background, should make the video less boring too haha.

I need some serious help with the Honda matchup. My zoning is terrible and I don´t know how to apply pressure safely after a knockdown (i.e safe jumping).

Thanks in advance.

Nice! I’d definitely like you to provide analysis on one of my worst matchups:

Normally, I turtle hardcore against Gief, but I decided to try something a little different here in that I wanted to keep him guessing as to whether I would run away or go in for an attack. Like ClxJames pointed out in the vids’ comments though, I know I should’ve ended a few of those DF with a combo to end the match quicker, but I was afraid he was going to be mashing 360°, though that turned out to be unfounded when I saw his inputs afterwards…

I noticed he was trying to crouch lariat a lot though (:df: :3p: ) but my dive kicks were still beating it. Was he doing it wrong or was the spacing of my dive kicks right?

Anyways, I hope you have time to do this Sol!

The crouch lariat is a bit more difficult online because of the delays, but I don’t think this Gief has a particular ability to do it regardless, if you can demon flip on him for free.

Exploding heart is basicly free damage on him if you’re seeing reversal timing on crouch lariats. The dive kick foot isn’t near inside his chest, it’s still above his head. Flip throws actually beat lariats, rather than dive kicks. (though backdash>stuff is good on the throw)

[there is a special lariat that works on the deep flip throws but it’s not widely known and hard to do. You hold up before you kick lariat to start pre-jump frames to quickly dodge the throw then lariat before the jump after the flip throw has whiffed. This is vanilla knowledge since option-selects work on him backdashing flip throws]

Back to this Gief. You should take full advantage of him on wake-up… sending him back to the lab if he can’t magic lariat properly. Next time you face him, or another Gief who eats exploding heart dive kicks, put their lariats to the test. Don’t confirm the dive kick with jabs, confirm with fierce and go into a combo. Follow a jab SRK ender with a dive kick for the quick rise and he probably won’t know what to do about that either, so you can just chain pressure.

When you get a jump-in blocked and are doing jab, jab demon flip games without getting into his head first, these are headbutt bait for Giefs who know the match; so beware of this turning into a bad habit.

I was suprised to not see you harass him with any fireballs at the start of the match since he has no meter. Akumas natural advantage comes from the fireballs since Gief struggles to maneuver around them with that big frame and you can build a meter advantage. Look out for random EX hands from desperate Giefs too, since from the look of your movement when his life was low, I think he may have caught you with one if he tried it.

Reducing the rambling before the video is the aim for episode 2. As you do more of these commentaries, you’ll get more comfortable with it and can speak faster and give more clear information without speaking very long.

Two things you could have mentioned is that first when you were describing Balrog getting ultra and it not always doing enormous damage, it does still put opponents in the corner from a stage push of like 65% where a Rog who can use the corner has a lot of advantages.

I think second you might have reccomended the cr.MK in footsies to fish out the dash straights as a matchup trick. You can buffer EX tatsus and other goodies in those. With Ultra 1 stocked, you can buffer jabs and see if he tries to punish by whiffing them in the straight zone.

Considering half the rambling was explaining the motivation for the series I don’t think you will have that problem.

I’ve been trying to rely less and less on projectiles to zone as part of getting better with my footsies. Forces me to be smart about how to move around and keep my opponent at the distance I need him to be from me. It also forces opponents who are looking for careless FB zoning (in order to jump over them and punish you) to look for other ways in.

Some jump in anyways (the scrubs) and they tend to eat many cr.HP from me until they learn (hah!). The ones that give me trouble are those who are patient and know their footsies, so they don’t jump in stupidly, forcing me to either turtle back and wait for an oppening or cause me to get frustrated so I do stupid shit like unsafe DF attacks that get stuffed.

You read it right though when you say I was getting nervous at the end. My schtick is to always mess up somehow at the end and lose the game when I had it right in my pocket. I almost lost the match there had he tagged me with any of those EX hands. I got lucky he was out of meter when I chucked that EX FB at the end.

You made the cut for Episode 2.

Would you mind making the third episode with one of the matches I posted on last page? There´s plenty of scrubby mistakes for you to point out, which could be quite helpful for both beginner and intermediate level Akuma players.
