I think the best aspect of it i’ve seen so far from picking it is like what samurai said, just the idea of having it just scares people from sticking out random pokes for some reason despite the fact that in my opinion the risk favors them more than us because of the relatively large margin of error, think the randomness factor scares them just like a random DP during blocked strings.
I am beginning to have changed views about the counter ultra. hilarious stuff, I was abusing overhead over and over again with no fear of a random DP or poke simply because the person i was vsing was too scared to do anything. It also as mentioned gives more opportunities for tenshin and makes moves that are normally unsafe somewhat safer like rekkas.
If you think at a moment: “I swear I think that’s coming”, that means you can react in time against some attack (of course not all…), or wait if the oppen doesn’t attacks.
I won’t give counter ultra to much credit as this point. People are still wrapping their heads around the new ultras. Once things settle in people will realize to bait it out.
I think that by the time things settle, Fei players should have already learned to avoid bait situations with the counter and focus on its more guaranteed applications (against jump-ins and cross-ups, slower moves, etc.). In that regard, I think it still has its “fear factor”, leading the opponent to stop combos short to avoid dropped links (and to fake a dropped link/U2 opportunity), fewer jump-ins and cross-ups, more throws, and more projectile play. Overall the offensive flow can still be disrupted through this change in behavior alone.
That said, U2 is pretty useless if you don’t get the opportunity to launch it. I guess time will tell if the Ultra still holds value later on though.
heh, wen useing it as an AA make sure that the move they throw it is actually gunna hit u, i had a cammy jump in at me with a hk but i guess it was done too early cuz i got the ultra flash and she ended up right next to me…
i agree with the examples given but i think it’s also a great AA and beats crossups … i’m used to using ultra as AA since i long ago gave up fei for akuma
Fei’s U2 can counter Ken’s U2 lol…I tried to use it after rekka x 2 to bait a cr. MK from Ken but his cr. MK whiffed on me and so he did his Ultra 2 and still got countered!!! Funny stuff. =)
Theoretically yes it can beat lots of stuff but in actual application there is FAR too much room for error, you’re ALWAYS guessing unless they throw something dumb like a full screen blanka rainbow roll or something ridiculously easy to react to.
For example, Yes it can beat cross ups and jump ins but what if he empty jumps? You’re screwed. Of course you can say you can DP, its very easy to say oh if he empty jumps in you DP, but you don’t know WHEN he’s gonna do an empty jumpin and when he ISN’T going to do one so it’s always a guessing game and you only get a chance to guess once.
The best aspect of the counter ultra isn’t the ultra itself, its the meta game it provides, you’d be surprised how many people are scared of the possibility of a “random” ultra popping out and in a game engine like SF4 where random reversals are actually something to fear like a random DP during blockstrings, it really does get people scared of something random like this dumb ultra ahah
The best use for counter ultra is these first few weeks haha. I was just playing a Sagat (offline) and I was down and out with a sliver of health left so I said screw it and did empty jump counter ultra. He didn’t fall for it and didn’t try to tech throw but right after my ultra animation he throws Tiger Destruction. Turns out Tiger Destruction doesn’t armor break. Hi-lar-i-ous win.
