Could some people answer some MvC2 interview questions?

I am doing an informative speech over MvC2. Pretty much choose it because I have been practicing/learning it the past few months and love it. So it should be easy to talk out my ass. However my teacher would love it if I could get some pros/people who know what they are doing to answer some questions, to add to my credibility. So without further adue here are my questions:

How would you describe Marvel’s game play?

How would you describe Marvel’s scene/community?

What is important in a character for competitive play?

How many people generally show up for Evo to play Marvel?

What are the prizes for Marvel at Evo or other major tournaments?

If you feel like adding any more informative tidbits of information, please do. I will of course give credit where it is due in my works cited and by name if the speech since I will probably quote you.

How would you describe Marvel’s game play?

(This is actually kind of a hard question, but here goes)
Similar to other fighting games, in MVC2 (Marvel), the goal is to reduce the opponent’s life bar to zero, while avoiding their attempts to do the same to you. In order to accomplish that goal, you have a variety of attacking techniques available. Complicating matters is the fact that every technique that can be used to attack your opponent has specific properties that make it more or less effective in certain situations, and also leaves you vulnerable to your opponent’s attacks for a certain time.

Unlike most other fighting games, Marvel places you in control of a team of 3 characters, each with their own life bar, and allows you to utilize multiple team-mates simultaneously. This lends itself to Marvel’s typically fast-paced, aggressive nature.

Marvel also sports an extremely large selection of characters, many of which with wildly diverging capabilities and characteristics. In current high-level play, there are only a handful of these that are universally recognized as being top-tier, and these stronger characters are used disproportionately. However, other characters also have unique strengths (sometimes the result of bugs, or glitches) and are sometimes employed for them. Probably almost every character can, with a full super bar and the right assist, kill another character in a single DHC combo. (Maybe not servbot, and Roll only on a technicality)

How would you describe Marvel’s scene/community?

Marvel’s scene, in the Seattle region at least, is a very friendly and open community of fighting game fans. It encompasses a huge variety of different (racial, social, economic) backgrounds and ages (not genders ). Most players are linked to the community through a location they play at, by this forum, or by proximity to an individual, extremely skilled player (like JMar). The locations are basically the University of Washington, GameWorks, Tilt arcade (Tacoma), LanWerx, and the houses of a few specific players.

What is important in a character for competitive play?

(This is another crazy question, as it encompasses every single aspect of the game)
In short, the most important thing about a character is practical damage potential.

Factors that influence that include the following:

  • Mobility. Characters with high mobility are able to create and maintain advantageous situations for themselves. In addition, extremely high mobility characters usually have a multi-directional air dash, a technique that allows several other attacking techniques not available to other characters.

  • High-damage combo potential. It’s important that characters be able to do high damage with their attacks.

  • DHC potential. The availability of supers that are fast, high damage, and that can transition to and from other characters is important for maximizing offensive damage from combos and for avoiding the death of your characters.

How many people generally show up for Evo to play Marvel?

I don’t know.

What are the prizes for Marvel at Evo or other major tournaments?

At the Pacific Northwest Majors, it was a portion of the entry fees. 70% for first, 20% for second, 10% for third.

Very fast paced, yet well-thought out gameplay. Those not familiar with the game will look upon the action as being too “crazy”, mindless, or just confusing.

However each round is just like a chessmatch, so many factors involved that a battle between two experienced players may look like random insanity, but its far from it. Someone can be doing great and on the verge of victory, but if he makes that one wrong move, the other player can make a comeback and win.

I had one of those moments the other day. My whole team(Bison/Charlie/Storm), was nearly destroyed right off the bat. At that point i had resigned myself to defeat, but didn’t give up and SOMEHOW i was able to make the right moves and come out on top in the end.

Crazy stuff :looney:

Still going strong. IMO, MVC2 easily has the greatest replay value of all time. So many characters, so many ways to play, teams to put together, strategies to form, etc.

There have been many other great fighting games released over the years, but MVC2 is the only one that i keep coming back to, and still have just as much fun with it as i did when it originally came out.

Everytime i think i’m beginning to get burnt out/bored with it, i discover something new i like and my interest is completely revitalized!

I’ll let someone else answer this one. While i play many others on a regular basis, always looking for ways to get better, my motiation for doing so is mainly for the funfactor and not the competitive edge.

Can’t answer those either, i’ve never been to EVO, nor do i attend any tournaments(partly from lack of resources to do so, secondly because i just have no interest at the moment).

Thanks for the answers I will probably quote a little from both of you, good stuff. If anyone does know a semi close number to how many people go to Evo for Marvel and how much the prize money was given away for 1st/2nd/3rd I would appreciate it.

How would you describe Marvel’s game play?

Fast Paced, Depends on the style and characters you play.

How would you describe Marvel’s scene/community?

Hype, because from what i seen in other game communities they try to copy our hype for their game.

What is important in a character for competitive play?

Movement, Safeness and OneHitKill potential.
