Could a game like Steel Battalion exist in today's gaming climate?

Looking back at steel battalion it was one of the most realistic and impressive games I ever played mostly due to the fact that you had to use a full cockpit controller to get completely immersed in its world. Looking back at this game it was fully worth the $200 dollars it retailed for. So SRK do you thing a game similar to Steel Batallion could be succesful today with the abundance of gimmicky shovelware and control schemes.

Damn I forgot about that game.

But I think it could only if an extensive tutorial was implemented. Moving in that game was fucking HARD. And there was a button for everything.

It could exist. It just wouldn’t sell worth a damn. I think that the general public is tired of peripherals, with all of these plastic guitars, drum sets, and what not.

Example: DJ Hero.

However, that’s not to say that I wouldn’t play the fuck out of Steel Battalion 3.

Don’t forget the permadeath. I hear it deletes your save if you fail to evacuate the mech? Love it. That’s the kinda thing that they probably couldn’t do today, what with easy mode and all.

I havn’t played it myself as I had a PS2 instead of an XB, but one day I really want to get my hands on it…

It would be a much needed breath of fresh air in the stagnant mecha/war genre. People want the future of warfare to seem simple and fast paced basically eliminating the human element of it. So a game like Steel Battalion would catch heat for not being extremely futuristic . I could see them making vertical tanks look like the Amp suit from AVATAR.But that would take away from the raw cumbersome feel of piloting this engine of death.

steel battalion couldn’t exist in it’s own gaming climate let alone the accelerated downwards spiral of today

Steel Battalion Broke even Pimp. Its sequel had a dedicated online community that played the game alot.

well damn, haha that is nice to hear. i just kind of assumed since it was complex and cool as hell that it didn’t sell well. if i could find a controller on the cheap i would snatch it up an in instant

edit: typo

Iunno…can a 4-player game that makes you buy a buncha goofy instrument controllers make it in today’s climate?

I know you were saying that to be sarcastic but I don’t really get it. Of course something like that would sell. People like music. People like to pretend to play music with everyday objects. Mix that up with some software and plastic and you get the music games of today. Those games don’t even compare to the mental and time commitment of Steel Battalion.

I say that it could exist today. Possibly even more so since it seems companies are willing to fill out every niche in the world. I’m shocked that Hori made that expensive Virtua On twin stick controller for a SINGLE XBLA only game. Like really? Who bought that? 1,000 people maybe? In Japan that is a niche (xbox) within a niche (xbl) within a niche (VO:OT) within a niche (people with money that can afford that controller).

SB was a great game. I didn’t get that far into it but it was a thrill to play. It felt like the future and on the software end I’d love to see what the power of the Xbox 360 could do for the game. First game where I really felt like I was in a walking towering tank and made some sort of sense (mechs don’t make sense from any military standpoint unless they are really just Avatar sized mechs).

I never played it either, but damn I’d love more games to have save-deleting deaths (within reason… it just would be nice to raise the stakes in certain games)

Exactly. The more you stand to lose, the more meaningful it becomes.
For example, Oblivion. If that game had permadeath, you better be damn sure I wouldn’t go into dungeons unprepared. And imagine the tension, when every battle could be the last for this character that you’ve played for hours.

That’s why rougelikes are so awesome, like Crawl and Nethack.

All I can say is I REALLY REALLY would like another one cause I never got a chance to buy the previous 2 =/

Could you imagine if fighting games had specialized 200 dollar controllers and required extensive training to become even competent at manipulating your character or executing special abilities? Preposterous.

I would be more interested in this really. But make it like Initial D with the customization(or should I say, like Armored Core).

From what I have read from the majority of post so far many of you all actually liked this game and hope to play one day. A game like SB was a ahead of its time and a remake for the current generation of consoles would be great with the current graphic hardware . If it was solely a multiplayer game with a online campaign it would be great. Here is an interesting question could the Mobile Suit Gundam series be made into a console game like Steel Battalion or would it be pointless.

On a related note:

Diehard fans of racing simulations will spend way, way, way too much money on actual racing cockpits with the best Logitech or Fanatec wheels and a real bucket seat and seatbelts, not to mention a high-spec PC to play games like GTR and iRacing (which has a $99/yr subscription fee) as well as an Xbox for Forza and a PS3 for GT.

I know that setups like this don’t come with the game itself like the Steel Battalion controller did. But it shows that gamers are still willing to really immerse themselves in the game, no matter what the cost. It’s fucking crazy.
