Converting a PS3 Mad Catz Street Fighter IV Fight Stick to Neo-Geo AES

Well, the subject says it all. I want to buy a PS3 Mad Catz Fight Stick and rewire it to work with my Neo-Geo AES. I have searched and searched, but I am not having luck finding out if this can be done. I think I would just get an AES extension cable and direct wire each of the buttons and joystick, bypassing the PCB, but is there a better way?

Not really. It may be easier or cheaper to use a different cable.

I would wire up a DA-15 male connector to the inside (or DB-25 if you want all of the signals from the TE accessible, and just wire up a DA-15 to DB-25 cable to use on the AES). Both should fit pretty cleanly inside the cable compartment, with almost no impact on the original sticks functionality (outside of the new connector inside the compartment.)

So, let me see if I can picture this. Connect the cables to a male DB-25, make a cable with a female DB-25 on one side (stuff all of this inside the case) and the cable coming out would have the DA-15 on it? If I am right, what would the advantage be? I mean, woud this give me a way to go, say from the DB-25 back to the USB? I figure the DB-25 would just be a connector to any other conversion cables I might want to make

Final question, I know I can find a pinout for going to the DA-15, but do you have a link to a good pinout to wire the DB-15?

Thanks all!

Although they’re used interchangeably, and it’s more “correct” to call it a DA15 connector, I’m going to refer to the Neo Geo’s 15-pin connector as a DB15, like the majority of the world. Anyway….

You have 2 main ways you can go about this…

#1 - You can panel mount a male db15 connector to your TE PCB and wire it in a fashion that corresponds to the Neo Geo’s pinout (forget all about that DB25 nonsense because there’s no need for such a large connector).

or

#2 - You can also, totally remove the stock TE’s PCB and enclose it in a Radio Shack project enclosure, like I did HEREand use the case as a dedicated Neo Geo stick while still maintaining the ability to use it with your PS3. Once again, there’s no need for a db25 connector since all TE functions fit within the db15 pin limit.

A great site from way back with lots of controller and RGB hacks

BTW, the standard db15 connector does not work with the Neo Geo because, the actually connector part is not long enough to make contact with the Neo Geo’s controller connector pins on the console, so you’ll have to use an actual Neo Geo extenson cord or cable when interfacing with the Neo Geo itself. I purchased several for around $5 from here…

BTW, I was just re-wiring my Sega stick last night to work with my Neo, and figured I’d take a pic…

Thanks a ton. Just what I needed. You guys are great!

NotANoob81, one question about this statement “#2 - You can also, totally remove the stock TE’s PCB and enclose it in a Radio Shack project enclosure, like I did HEREand use the case as a dedicated Neo Geo stick while still maintaining the ability to use it with your PS3.” What did you do with the big hole that left in your TE? Just curious.

What I was going to do was fill the metal panel and get some art done to cover the void, but scrapped that when I gave the remains to my friend.

notanoob pretty much clarified what I said, I’d leave the TE PCB in there, both the TE PCB and the auxiliary output (DB-15 or 25) can coexist.
