Silly question, but what is a good indication as to whether or not you’ve properly committed something - a combo, for example - to muscle memory? Or what is a good way to gauge this? I’m trying to figure out when is a good time to say "Okay, I’ve got this down " so I know when to start moving onto other things in my training.
It’s hard to gauge, honestly. I know some people swear by “if I can do it 10 times in a row without dropping it, it’s good”, and it’s a decent place to start, as that indicates consistency. But it’s not foolproof, because doing it in a real match is still completely different. I know people who can do almost anything consistently in training mode but drop things frequently in matches. There are also weirdos (like me) who are more consistent on their hit confirms in matches than in training mode.
The way I see it is that you’ve got a combo down when you rarely drop it in a match. I personally tend to focus on the simple stuff first and don’t move on to the more advanced things until I get those frequently in matches.
Piggy backing off of what @Naeras said. Yes you should first practice in training till you have it down pretty consistently. At least to a point where you successfully perform the combo more than you drop it. Like for every 10 times you do it. 7-8/10 will be successful. Once you get to that point then you must put your training to work. Get in a real match and see if you can land it. Here’s the thing though. Not only must you have it down consistently but you must also practice creating opportunities to land it. Perform your combos in training and after you got consistency. Look at what moves your character posses that will allow for the easiest or most consistent hit confirms into the combo and practice performing your combo after that initial move. Once you have both of these down, then it’s just a matter of doing it in a real match where it just keps getting more and more consistent after time
When I won’t miss it in a stressful situation in real conditions, ie tournaments or challenges.
thanks for that, that’s the best practice for that outside of an actual match
I don’t really have any problems with hit confirming. I’ve just been spending the last few days being really iffy with the consistency of my combos and not feeling “ready” to play real matches because of it, which is something I haven’t really had too much of an issue with up until now. I know I’m going to have to bite that bullet eventually, though. (It’s been in BlazBlue CP Extend, if that information means anything)
I’ll just follow the ‘7-10 in a row’ rule of thumb for now with all my combos before I start transitioning onto live opponents. I’m likely just over-thinking this, lol. Thanks for the advice.
When u can pull said thing off in a real match situation. Its one thing to practice a long, Marvel style combo on the practice dummy, but having to hit confirm it in the middle of the neutral gm during a match against a live opponent is a different monster…ill have swag combos w my character that i can only pull off in training mode for a few weeks, meanwhile during actual matches ill stick to my old combos i might try for the new one during a casual set or something to see if i wont drop it, but yea i say it takes a minute…there are things i can do now that i consider my bnb that i struggled with doing on command months ago…
