Conquering nerves

so i’m sure many others have this same problem with playing like utter and total crap once the games start mattering to you. I just can’t seem to even think straight when people are watching me play and i’m invested in a match, this weekend i participated in a fun little area vs. area team exhibition and just feel like damn, i really let my team down with how poorly i played.

anyone have tips on how to overcome nerves, playing in front of people and above all else, how to calm the fuck down after getting completely mind-fucked by nerves?

anyways footage of the event and my terrible play can be found here: http://www.twitch.tv/denshoni/c/2504584

i start playing at 16:40 or so in.

It’s tough and I have this problem still but the best thing to do from what I heard is experience in matchups and being on stream in time you’ll be comfortable when playing on stream.

If you experienced facing a character so many times and the eyes of the audience you’ll have nothing to fear.
And finally one of the most important things is:

Stick to your knowledge and gameplan and you shall overcome fear. Even if defeated on stream review and always learn. Hopefully this helps if not I apologize.

you just have to practice get bodied but carry on, it’ll be fun in the end. Maybe start with casuals first.

casuals are how I have been trying to level up, took me a couple months to get used to feeling nervous while playing casuals, but when something is on the line I just fold like i’m sitting on a pair of 2’s

Yea I know how you feel I was at first just keep going if you are enjoying it, if you don’t mind me asking where do you play?

I live in the east bay area of norcal, roughly like a hour and change from all the frequent tournaments in norcal

A wise man once said,

"free from desire, you realise the mystery
Caught in desire, you see only the manafestations…

If you want to be given everything, give everything up"

oh good norcal has a good crowd of people that are nice so you’ll be fine.

Just keep playing in public to get comfortable doing so. If you can have a lot of casuals in front of people, and try to avoid money matches or those that count towards anything, just so you can get used to playing in public without any additional pressure. Hopefully you will gradually get used to playing in front of people.

Also, try and get to know the people around you. Getting to know the people you play around will help you get comfortable playing in front of them ^^

I am in the same boat I buckle under pressure, I never played fighting games was a rpg geek growing up, so this game is going to be the first one I am trying to take seriously…even tho I main wright >.>…

Sirlin mentioned this in one of his articles. I think he said John Choi’s advice to him was “You just aren’t used to playing in tournaments.” You have to do something a lot to get used to it.

Get used to playing in public? God Im old and miss arcades. I had to get used to playing in private.

Nerves may have a lot to do with the intimidation factor, especially in tournament where people are bound to bust out something that you just don’t know how to deal with. For me, the best method I came up with for overcoming my tournament nerves is to develop a play style that accounts for everything. According to your sig, you play Zero. That character literally has an answer to everything. Your goal should be to have a team/play style that allows you to control the pace of the match. You should be able to go into the tournament match and be like, “Okay, I know what my options are here. I know what my opponent’s assists are and what they could potentially be capable of. I’m going to do x, x, and x to make sure they can’t do what they want to do.” You need to have a team with a game plan that won’t fall apart, even if you lose a character. Basically, you want to minimize the risk of “Oh god, shit’s happening, this is a tournament. Ugh, what do I do?!” Be patient, don’t needlessly rush down, and seriously, just breathe. Don’t be afraid to lose. There’s only going to be one winner of the tournament. You’ll have just as much “shame” as everyone else if you lose. If you can get into these habits, then you can overcome your tournament nerves for the most part.

Just picture everyone naked.

well with where I go to that would be a lot scarier…

Then picture everyone skinned.

LoL at the casual play helping nerves in tourneys.

The best way to get over being overly nervous when playing in tournaments is to enter into many tournaments and play. Local, regional, EVO. The bigger, the better.; You get over being nervous real quickly.

it’s not necessarily tournaments that put my anxiety through the roof when playing, it’s having an audience at all. Made it back out to another tournament, Lanhammer in SF. Long and short of it is that i’m doing pretty well so far, but my one match on stream was pretty bad… got bopped by xray: http://www.twitch.tv/iplaywinner/b/447281859

I did manage to make it out of pools in loser’s though. http://lanhammer.challonge.com/mvc3d

bracket is looking mighty deadly

Well, congrats on getting that far!

Lots of people would get bodied by X-Ray, don’t worry about it.

If you didn’t drown in pools you are already making progress.
