^ oh, sorry. I don’t know about in Vista, but you can try it.
Go to Start and Click “Run” and type it in there.

Preppy, did you consider a GTS 512 instead of the GTX? Save ya a few more bucks, for generally better performance.
What OS are you running? If it’s Vista and your drive doesn’t show up in my computer anymore, try this:
It’s Vista. And it does show up still. Thanks anyway.
Hmm, I thought my problems were fixed after updating that chipset driver. After all I had rebooted a few times and hadn’t had any problems in my games. But as I said before it is random, so it might have taken a week or so to find out if it was fixed.
It just happened again, and I happened to snag a video of it. It’s 13mb, about 2 minutes long. I tried to keep it short so it doesn’t really show much. Just me loading up Team Fortress 2, and it freezing. The freeze happens towards the end obviously if you want to skip there. Keep sound on so you can hear what it sounds like when it freezes. The audio gets in like a quarter second loop for a few, then it speeds up where it remains until I hold down the power switch and shut off the PC.
I think the only real way to confirm is to backup all your data, reformat and see if the issue continues. If it does, it’s most likely bad hardware.
A mis-configured BIOS can cause that sort of thing, too. Use the “load fail safe settings” feature to test it.
Sorted my problem. Just a simple ‘run as admin’ worked.
I tried loading the fail safe BIOS settings. So far, it’s working fine. Although just as before, I won’t know if it’s fixed or just a coincidence until after several reboots since it is completely random.
Sorry, I didn’t see this post. Reboot. LOL
Yes It Does! Thanks guy.
I get 10down/1up and whenever I would “open” a video on your site, the download speed would start at 500kb then slowly drop to like 25kbps. I was assuming it was my firewall not letting your data through without checking everything first.
Preppy, here is a review of the GTS 512.
In there, there are benchmarks comparing it to the GTX (among other cards).
Interesting, I’ll check that out. I’d heard the opposite elsewhere (GTX > GT > GTS), so I’ll sort this out.
That sounds like your provider is doing something wonky - I know Comcast does random things. Who’s your provider? How are you connected?
^That was true of some of the “old” GTS’es.
NVIDIA did a lovely job naming their line of cards extreme sarcasm. They’ve had about 5 different versions of the GTS card. The newest one, the G92 chip, is the one reviewed in that review.
They have a page in that review explaining all the differences in NVIDIA’s horrible naming scheme lol.
EDIT: In benchmarks, the GTS and GTX constantly swap places for the top spot. The GTX usually comes out on top when the AF/AA is jacked all the way up. If you aren’t an AF/AA junky, that shouldn’t be an issue. And the price difference is worthy of note considering how comparable they are in performance. If you’re into overclocking, you’ll also see how much of a beast the GTS is thanks to the cooler G92 chip. OC’ed, the GTS pretty much runs away with the benchmarks.
My registration problem hasn’t disabled windows yet, so I’m assuming it worked itself out. I’ve restarted my PC a few times and it seems fine. Thanks for the heads up anyways though.
Ok… need advice/thoughts.
My computer works. 95% of my important things work. Microsoft Word/Excel, Photoshop, emulators, games, Firefox, etc.
I’m on Windows XP Home SP2
I can’t run GGPO
I can’t install stuff cuz Windows Installer is screwed up. I can only install minor things that don’t involve Windows Installer
My Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 doesn’t work, but other PDF programs work
I can’t install MSN Messenger.
I can’t run Windows Update, even though my Windows XP is 100% legal.
Last night, I tried to get a new conversion DOC to PDF program. That worked, however my computer became more screwed up.
Whenever I right-click ANY file, Windows Installer will automatically start. It slows down everything majorly.
To bypass this stupid thing, I disabled Windows Installer from MSConfig.
Question:
My computer friend has a legal copy of Windows XP Pro SP2 to give me.
He says that if I install it, it will fix my Windows, and upgrade to XP Pro.
If I install that, should it fix up my Windows Installer?
It won’t screw up my computer right?
I won’t lose data or anything crazy bad right?
It should fix up Windows Installer, so I can fix all of those problems above right?
Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
This is going to be obvious, but – the Windows Installer service is broken. All of your other failures stem from that fact. You could try to reinstall Windows to fix this, but it wouldn’t make any difference if you reinstalled Home or Pro, really. All you want to do is to fix Windows Installer, don’t even bother thinking about anything else: those are just symptoms, this is the cause.
I forgot to mention in the post, my bad.
I tried fixing Windows Installer. I tried uninstalling and re-installing, etc. Numerous occasions, and that didn’t work.
It either won’t work, or it says I don’t have adminstrative access (Which is strange because I’m the sole user of the laptop). I’ve tried everything that I could with Windows Installer, which is why my friend suggested XP Pro.
I’m on my work laptop right now, so I can’t give any diagnostics unfortunately.
I was at the nintendo brawl tournament in nyc and recorded footage wit my gf’s digital camera but when i connect it to my laptop the vids don’t play no matter what app i open them with any help?
What specific digital camera is it?
What specific file format is it? What is the file extension?
