Listen to that advice from that tool. I can go look up the associated research if you really want, but it won’t tell you much new. I don’t know about the ICH9 right now – I could look it up if you really want, but would prefer dinner.
It should be done on the old computer that has access to the file. You could do it on the new computer, but then the old computer still has a bogus file. VirtualDub should work fine.
You could temporarily enable Indeo on any computer through reregistering. It will not be fully functional no matter what you do so you really do need to reencode the video. Just reencode it on the old computer and be gleefully escaped from this dumbness.
^Thanks Prep! I’ll get those drivers and see if that helps. I’ve already rebooted a few times since it last happened and have had no problems, so like I said it’s pretty random. After I get the drivers it might take me a few days to figure out if it is fixed or not.
I’ve got a quick question which I bet someone has the answer to. A few years ago, I saw a segment on G4 about a program which when you run it, shuts off all the other programs you could use to waste time, allowing only stuff like Word or PowerPoint. Like for example, you’d run it while you were writing a paper for school. Anyone know the name of something like that? I’d search, but I have no idea how to convert that into searchable terms.
im just curious if anyone knows how to flash your bios w/a usb thumb drive despite the fact the drive is bootable. any thoughts? we tried this @ work for shits & giggles on a POS dell that we’re fixing for a cust however the mb supports usb drives and since we made the usb drive bootable to be recognized as an hdd it still wouldnt flash the bios.
So I dled Windows Movie Maker to re-encode the file, but much to my fucking bewilderment I get this message:
“C:\Users\Anton\Desktop\Video 1.avi could not be imported. The required codec was not downloaded automatically because the Download codecs automatically check box is not selected in the Options dialog box.”
But, of course, the box IS selected. And again, of course, I try every possible variable and still get the same message, whether the box is selected or defaults are restored, or the extreme opposites of the defaults and everything in between.
Are there any different programs that might work?
Edit – And I don’t want to send the file over my server due to reasons I don’t want to discuss.
I think the BIOS update would have to be a self-booting executable while on that USB drive. I tried this a while back on some of our POS Dells at work and while I downloaded the full executable onto a floppy and ran it that way, it wouldn’t work on the USB drive I tried to boot off of. Dell’s BIOSes are stupid like that, I guess.
You got a model on that PC? Maybe I can do a little research.
tonda: Is this on the old computer that can play the file or the new computer that cannot play the file? If this is the new computer, I’m going to have to repeat: this content cannot work fully on the new computer. It should be reencoded on the old computer.
Windows Movie Maker cannot download AVI codecs. Don’t waste your time. I help run that server (assuming they’re using the one I’m thinking of), we cannot directly give you AVI codecs because it is not sane. Sorry. =\
This is a followup to my last problem, as I find out it isn’t a driver issue, it’s an underclocking issue.
My mobo is an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe. I used to have an AthlonXP 2800+, running at a 12.5x multiplier (reported by both the BIOS and in Windows using CPU-Z). I upgraded my processor to a 3000+. The multiplier in the BIOS still reads 12.5x, but CPU-Z is reporting 6.0x, and it is affecting game performance (namely WoW). Changing the multiplier in the BIOS isn’t changing what CPU-Z is reporting, either, and has no noticable impact.
Any advice? Can I fix this in BIOS settings? Do I need to flash my BIOS?
I have a vga monitor in my arcade cabinet and I need a video card that outputs 2 signals at the same time. arcade monitor accepts 640x480 max and desktop monitor is a dell/samsung and I think it does upto 1600x1200.
dell inspiron 8600 laptop isn’t turning on at all, with or without the battery and/or the power chord. Does anyone on these boards know anything about laptop repair? I think it is either a blown fuse or a motherboard issue
Take out all the power sources and remove all the removable drives (CD and floppy), peripherals like external keyboards and mice, all USB devices and PCMCIA cards. Hold in the power button for 10 seconds, plug in only the AC power and try it again.
If you’re looking to build, you might want to save instead of buying pieces at a time. Sometimes they don’t work and you’ll want to return them as soon as possible. Also, depending on how long it takes you to get the parts you need, there might be some new or better parts that become available. Things get cheaper everyday.
On the Dells you have to toggle a jumper on the motherboard to enable BIOS writing. That protection was the only way I was able to remove Chernobyl off a old drive I bought at a flea market.
My Laptop running Vista drops wireless connection while downloading torrents. It works for about 20 mins but then the connection just disappears. It comes back when I restart the laptop but it is really frustrating when leaving it on overnight only to find that 17% has been downloaded. Cable connection using a phillips SNB5600. Any help would be great.
