For some reason it’s actually working fine now (I think its a hardware issue, this thing is very old). I’m dling the PC-check software elitericerocket suggested and gonna run it later to verify. Although I’m disabling the auto-update anyway and I’ll clean install if it happens again. I’ll wait and see if it reverts back to vesa mode. Thanks again.
I’m planning on upgrade my comp with the new Nvidia 8800 graphics card and I can’t decide which is a better processor for preformance, the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, or the AMD Phenom 9500 Agena 2.2GHz 4 x Quad Core
I tried watching YouTube vids fullscreen, but get a big diagonal line with white on one side, and gray on another [like this].
It was working fine yesterday. I also installed Norton and Yahoo IM earlier today, if that helps [I’m guessing it might have something to do with that, since prior to install YouTube full screen was working fine].
Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Yo srk, i finally bought a new computer, built it from stuff i gathered at fry’s ( Fatal1ty Abit motherboard f-190HD, 2 gigs of ram, 500 gig hard drive from seagate , sony 18x dvd-r drive , Intel Core 2 duo processor, running on windows xp home *
could srk link me to what everyone should have on there comp? A version of aim? Video and sound codecs, anything that comes to mind? my old comp had all my stuff like full versions of winrar, winzip, codecs, ect. help me out plz!
You just built a nice new computer and the first thing you want to do is load it up with a bunch of junk? Just add apps as you need them if you don’t already anticipate using something.
I just got it, and i want to be able to watch my videos and such and play my games and emus on here. but i cant without the correct codecs and programs you know what i mean?
another thing i forgot to mention, my seagate 500 gig HD, is only being read at 125 gigs, but in the bios when i boot up my computer, it regonizes it as a 500 gig hd. how do i make it so windows reads the full 500 gigs?
I don’t know the answer to your hard drive question, but you might want to make go back and re-install whatever version of Windows it is and see if it’s not partitioned or something.
For codecs, I just use VLC Media player. It plays everything I’ve thrown at it and there’ nothing else to install.
i downloaded the vlc media player and was able to watch the variable atmosphere combo vid HQ ver. * my old pc couldnt ever do it, i could watch it, but at like 5% of its speed. * i love my new computer, power bwahahahah.
anywho, i can watch the vid on VLC, but is there any way i can have my windows media player play all my videos too? using the codecs from VLC , you know what im talking about?
Also, it says on my motherboard that it has 10 , usb 2.0 ports , but im using my usb port on my iriver to transfer data movies and music * i use it as a portable hard drive * and my computer syas in a little text bubble * this device can perform faster * meaning, it isnt usb 2.0? when i use my iriver on my ps3, it transfers super fast, and here, it says its usb 2.0, but it isnt as fast, saying i have to do something before it is usb 2.0. any ideas?
There’s most likely an option in your motherboard BIOS that let’s you choose from USB 1.1, 2.0 or both, try checking your manual for that, also if you just installed windows XP using an older CD with no service packs you might need to update the OS since USB 2.0 drivers were first bundled with SP1 (your hard drive issue makes me think you’re missing SP2). If your using Vista it should have those drivers already installed for you.
As for your codecs question search on google for either “Combined Community Codecs Pack” or “Storm Mega Codecs Pack” (not sure if I can post links, I can PM you links if you can’t find them, both of them are free) only get one of these, do NOT install them both together or might you run into some weird conflicts.
Never actually installed it, I 1st found it at softpedia.com (where I normally look for freeware apps) and listed as freeware so I thought it was a decent option, thanks for the advice/link.
You obviously missed the memo that codec packs are fucking abominations unto the eyes of the lord. I’m sorry you missed that, but glad that we were able to save yet another victim from their fucking incompetence.
Please do your goddamned homework before recommending codec packs. When I look at crashes in Vista for multimedia components and the crash listings for every one is headlined by crashes DUE TO CODEC PACKS, I get a little fucking pissed off when you try to “help” people by ramming that garbage down their throats.
You didn’t know any better, but it’s still fucking awful.
(XP is “better” about letting codecs corrupt memory and just not noticing. Not noticing the problems? Actually not a good thing.)
My friend built my computer and set it all up, i just picked out the stuff from the store i suck, ass, at computers. Ill have him read this post and take a look into it, im not about to fiddle with the bios and screw something up.
And this windows XP home ver. that im using is from the Reinstallation CD Windows XP home edition that came bundled with my Dell that i bought in 2002.
And thanks for that link on codecs preppy, ill look into what codecs i need, but i downloaded and installed angel-something on my pc, but say it was on your no no list, so i unistalled it asap. only had it on my computer for a few hours. glad to be rid of it =]
It’s alright, you just need to install SP2 in order to fix your USB issues since your windows CD is from the 1st batch and comes with no USB 2.0 drivers, your hard drive issue is a bit more complicated since you’ll either need to create a streamlined Windows XP CD containing SP2 (or get a copy having SP2 already) and reformat the computer with it or optionally get a 3rd party tool like partition magic or the freeware Partition Resizer to re-partition your hard drive and get the full 500GBs recognized.
If you decide to create a streamlined XP CD, try following this guide:
You don’t really need to mess around with adding drivers and all the other stuff since what you’re looking for is how to add the service packs/updates to your existing XP disc.
Here’s also a link to Partition reziser’s home page in case you want to go this route:
on the start menu there is a windows update icon. i went to the website and updated everything they have for download. im still on the 125 gig out of 500 gig hard drive.
how do i check if im on service pack 2 or not? and what the situation is on my usb. o.o
Checking for SP 2 : Start > Control Panel > System. It should be on the “General” tab.
While you’re there…
Click on the “Hardware” tab > Device Manager > Expand “Disk drives” and check if Windows detects your drive as the kind that you remember buying. In fact, just post what it says here.
Edit ~ And oh yeah. Sometimes you have to perform Windows update multiple times because the updates need to be installed in a certain order. Try running it again and see if there’s more updates to install.
