Computer Help Thread v4.0

Woo, thats a breath of fresh air. Thanks :wgrin:

go to microsoft’s website and download the ones specifically for xp.

PMed you a link the one I downloaded before they asked for signing up.

I’ll let you know if it works or not. I’m hoping it does cause I really dont want another HDD crash.

wtf??, did you even read my post? no pun intended bro but, it’s the individuals (end user) responsibility to make/create a set of system recovery cd’s REGARDLESS of a recovery console on the hdd. it’s like you telling me that sony provides system recovery cd’s with the purchase of their laptops. I’ve seen/done this Numerous times and have felt the urge to throw shit at customers for being dumb sometimes.

NO, you need to purchase the toshiba system recovery cd’s.

with the HP and Acer laptops that we sell, you don’t have that option. We’ve looked through the system, but the only way you can back them up is by hitting the F8 key on bootup (Acer’s is a little different), and it will start a screen up that looks like the windows install screen. Actually, what I think they did was pop a virtual drive with a mounted ISO file to it. I was going by that, but if Sony does it differently, than good job to them. The HP laptop that I have and my coworker’s Compaq both use my method, so I thought HP just uses that method now.

Can anyone point me towards a thread for uTorrent help, or could I ask away?

I have the yellow light of “No Incoming Connections” showing. Eventually it turns red. I don’t know WTF to do, because last time I tried to set up the connections I turned off my internet for a whole weekend by mistake. Anyone have some step-by-step help for a tech noob?

Got some questions about privacy.

I share this Internet connection with other people in my house. The router is in my brother’s room and he has his own computer, and there’s another computer a floor below. Even though I have an administrator account on the main computer, are my files and actions completely off-limits? I have all my personal files set to private so that other users can’t access them (I’m not that dumb). But sometimes I get an icon on the system tray that says “new media sharing device detected” (or something like that) which is my brother’s Xbox 360. Why are his things affecting this computer in any way? What else are people capable of?

Thanks in advance for helping out a concerned noob.

www.portforward.com < I THINK that’s the site

if not, google port forwarding

right click “My Computer” > Manage > Computer Management (Local) > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares
Now, you’ll see a list of everything that people can access easily through the network. You can also use this to monitor how many people are connected, and what files they’re viewing.

with the exception of the IPC and Printer shares, you can go to the respective folder, (eg. C:\Documents and settings\user\shared) etc… and right click > sharing and security, and disable them.

If they’re already disabled, that’s fine. They still may appear in there.

That’s how to prevent the less-knowledgeable people from getting in. You shouldn’t have to worry, as about 90% of the people that claim to know something wont be able to get in either.

Are you using a router you probably need to open whatever port uTorrent is using. I had the same problem a few days ago.

For the techs out there who have more than a lot of the answers to questions in this thread (Chozen, Preppy, Mixah, and at the very bottom of the food chain, me) remote access is something that would definitely be useful for threads like this. People that have issues they can’t explain clearly through SRK would definitely benefit from using Teamviewer.

It’s a remote access utility that is just as powerful as any VNC application, but without the hassle of configuring access through NATs/firewalls/etc. You just install it, the client installs it, and you can connect to their computer and watch their errors and diagnose their stuff in real-time. Works right out the gate. I’ve been using it for a month or two now and I love it.

I have a Sager laptop (Clevo 570u). Whenever I am using it on battery power and go back to the power brick the brightness tends to stay at the same place it was when I using battery power and I have to turn the brightness way up. Is there a way I can set it so the brightness is always at max regardless of what power source is being used?

thanks for that.

I can’t tell you exactly where it is on a Sager laptop but there should be a program called something like ‘power profile’. The manufacturers usually put it in the control panel.

From there you can do all sorts of things including editing the brightness regardless of the power source used. Some other things are hard drive switching on and off when you are away from your computer and cpu speed depending on the power mode.

Are you referring to “Power Options” in the control panel? Or should this be a seperate program from windows? I can mess with the hard drive switching on and off through the Power Options control panel, but I don’t see anything about CPU speed or brightness. I’m at my parents for a few days, so I’ll have to check again when I get back to school. Any other advice would be appreciated.

printer problems

my printer is bugging the fuck out. i need to print something, and when i tried it prints like random ass shit. like alien messages. and it’ll print pages of shit until the printer runs out of paper.

someone halp meh!

Anyone else getting the New Asus C90S notebook? I’m gonna order one soon with these specs:

Core2Duo E6600

2GB DDR2 Ram

120 GB HDD

nVidia NV-8600 512mb

It comes without an OS but you can order one along with it. I was wondering if I should use my existing copy of XP pro or get a copy of Vista Home. Is the 8600 DX10 compatible? I wanna do some gaming with it if it’s up to the task.

its been hijacked or possessed. kill it or try cleaning your print head and reinstalling the drivers.

not bad, not bad although if it was me, I’d stick pro on it. Maybe my copy of ultimate (full) but, NAH, pro for me is the way to go. as far as the printer problem that I saw prior, do a clean install, clear out your prefetch files, DO NOT UPDATE YOUR DRIVER VIA YOUR OLD SHIT CD but rather the manufacturers website, do the printer maintenance (just to be safe) and you should be fine however, don’t try multi tasking as I’ve seen some smart ass clients trying to outwit both themselves and I when I’m thinking, “what the hell is this monkey doing?” once you’ve all that you should be set.
