Computer Help Thread v4.0

I saw that and I appreciate the links, but I was asking if someone had tried one of those converters and liked it.

For example. What do you use?

Of the free tools, I use Video Tools and GSpot, but to be 1000% honest, I use Adobe Premiere and WinAvi Converter, and neither will do the function you’re looking for. I know that Video Tools and GSpot wont as well, so at least you can start with a process of elimination. Sorry I cam off elitest earlier, I had just woke up.

try that. It’s called Riva… a friend recommended it.

AS A NOTE TO ANYBODY CONSIDERING GETTING AN ATI X2900 SERIES DX10 CARD:

IT EATS UP POWER!!! IT’S A LOT BETTER THAN THE 8800GT CARD, BUT BY ITSELF, IT EATS UP 215 WATTS, WHEREAS THE 8800 IS ABOUT 130 OR SO. YOU NEED AT LEAST A 550+ WATT PSU, AND IF YOU INTEND TO CROSSFIRE THE CARDS, YOU’LL NEED A 700+

just thought i’d let you know. I couldn’t figure out why our systems wouldn’t turn on when we installed them during reviews, UNTIL… we plugged it into a power monitor and the best computer we have with a 1000W PSU, and saw when benchmarking Oblivion (Which plays on full speed at 100 or so FPS) that it uses about 200-220W

I have a problem with an xbox controller driver. When I install it, my controller works fine, but then if I have to restart my computer windows wont load up, all I get is a black screen. Now if I start in safe mode, and click on ‘use last known good configuration’ my computer will load and everything, but Ill have to re-install the driver, and its a pain in the ass. How can I fix it so the driver doesnt mess up my computer?

What operating system?
It sounds like you’re installing the Vista Drivers on XP… That’s what happened to me.

XP home edition

Make 1000% sure that you’re not using the Vista Drivers… for a while I had the same issue, and I realized the installer was installing Vista Drivers.

My background is black. Its not suppose to be, because I got a Gears of War wallpaper under it. When I restart the computer, you can see it for a couple of seconds before the desktop loads and it goes back to being black. I cant change it in the properties either.

Turn active desktop off.

I’ve gotten as far as scanning goes but it wont get rid of the infected files. I got the trail version and it tells me to sign up for the full ver.

is there anyway you can just download an xp disk without buying it? i just need it to install a configuration file on my laptop. everytime i start my laptop, it goes black and says that a config file is missing and i need the startup disk to fix it…i have to put the cd in and press “r.” help? i don’t know where the cd that came with my computer is.

nope.

let me guess, one of the MANY people who either 1) did NOT create system recovery cd’s or 2) was provided them but Lost them for various reasons. I’ll stick to #1 as that’s the usual case. Otherwise if you have Plan B available (recovery partition) then consider yourself lucky otherwise, your computer is fuct. you can try the non destructive restore but it usually goes to shit after a while. I’d say pony up and buy yourself the disks or another xp license if your fortunate enough to do so.

Chozen1: Some of the new computer manufactures, like HP, do not provide the discs anymore, so if your computer crashes, you have to send it back to them, if you cannot access the recovery tool on the hard drive they supply you with.

its number 2, but i can’t recover without the disk provided. i don’t know where it is…
i will not, will not, will NOT purchase a copy of windows xp just to hit r for .0000001 seconds to get my computer to start.

my computer is a toshiba P35-S611. when i start it up, it says:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

you can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original setup CD-Rom.
select ‘r’ at the first screen to start repair.

is the original setup cd rom just a regular windows xp disk, or…?

Sounds to me your OS is messed up. You’re better off refreshing a full copy of an operating system on it.

PM me. I might know where you can get something.

At least if it’s a Dell or HP you can usually call and they’ll send you the OS disc. I’ve had a few people at work do that in the past few weeks with systems they bought about a year ago. I don’t know about other manufacturers though.

Using the recovery console isn’t that hard. But it’s sorta a pain in the ass. You’re better off just wiping the hd and starting fresh.

Is there any way to check that? And if they are Vista drivers, how can I get XP ones?

Heya guys. I’m having problems with aim. I’ve gotten this message twice in the past week:

AOL System Msg (2:55:49 PM): Your screen name (AngryLobster500) is now signed into AOL® Instant Messenger ™ in 2 locations. To sign off the other location(s), reply to this message with the number 1. Click here for more information.
AngryLobster500 (2:56:17 PM): 1
AOL System Msg (2:56:17 PM): Your other AIM sessions have been signed-off. You are now signed-on from 1 location(s).

After it happened the first time I changed my PW, but it happened again today even after the change. Does anybody know what might be up? Could this happen if my internet just happened to go out, and aim is trying to sign me in before it realizes i’ve been d/ced or something? I’m guessing that this is what my problem is, because the AIM page that loads when you login to aim randomly popped up when I got the message, but I just wanna be safe.

i get that all the time. happens when your internet goes off and on. no worries.
