Sweet thanks guys, ok now i was looking at the motherboard andit looks like it has the input for an IDE cable, should i plug it in, also are there IDE power cable extensions?
Get a can of Compressed Air and blast the hell out of it… They normally come with these really skinny straws that you can guide into the smaller areas of the fan and blast out dirt and dust (in case that’s the problem.) If that doesn’t fix it… You’ll be best off just replacing the thing… If your warranty is already void a mom and pop shop around should do it for you within 30 minutes… cost of the fan is super cheap (less than 5$ i’d think), and maybe they charge you 30 for the labor X_X
Or you can do it yourself, but I personally have never opened my laptop, so im not sure how feasible that is… I’ve never had the need to go into one.
Well it’s not going to work if you don’t plug it in :looney: You can buy IDE Extensions and/or LOOOONG IDE Power Cords at any local PC shop (maybe even CompUSA/BestBuy/Fryes etc) if you are working with a large tower or something. They are cheap too. You’ll get a better deal online, but then you gotta wait for shipping.
For IDE power cables, just look for some molex Y-Cables. Unlike SATA, IDE power connections are not usually referred to as such, even though in a modern system that’s all they are used for.
Ok new problem. The port that I thought was a IDE port ISNT. So new plan seeing as I have a hard drive and want to use it. Can I buy a external hard drive kit and still boot XP from it? The Dell has Vista on it and i want to install XP on the new hard drive so I can still use some older programs that aren’t compatible with Vista.
Bonus Question: My aunt bought a emachine from some guy who seemed to believe that it would be better to install XP over Vista, now the sound wont work on the computer. The computer came with Vista already on it so I have no idea what to do for her? I tried to download drivers for the motherboard but they didnt work bc I could only find the Vista version?
Sounds good. Motherboard is a HUGE choice for building a DAW PC. I wish I had listened and got an Asus or Gigabyte board instead of ECS. Not to hate on ECS, but I’m having some stability problems that I think are related to my mobo.
I don’t do Western Digital anymore because the last three I’ve had were raunchy. I like Seagate exclusively, now but it’s mostly personal preference.
You’re going to LOVE that M-Audio board. The latency is amazing and the amount of I/O you get on one card without a breakout box cluttering up your desktop is insane for the price of the card. Only thing is, if you’re planning on putting any software effects or soft-synths on while recording (I don’t know what music style you do) you’ll want more RAM, especially if you’re running Vista. Shoot for 4 gigs and the world should be open to you. I can load a full set of orchestra samples on one PC - yes, that’s every instrument doubled in some cases like the violins in which case I have 18x3different articulations, for example - but I don’t have anymore memory left over for reverb or anything else I’d like to do while recording. I wish I had gotten 4 gigs.
Okay guys, I need a recommendation on a program, namely backup software. What I’m looking for it to do is:
Able to copy certain files to a portable HDD at certain times (say it takes a folder from C: and puts it on D: every three days or so)
and the ability to possibly copy files to back them up through a home network.
…Anyone know of a program that does that?
I’m sorta getting help now, you can try following along.
I found the problem. This is the curse of having the knowledge to fix any simple software problem that would perplex a novice to suicide - my HARDWARE always get fsck’ed up.
At least they’re going to replace it.
I’ll be sure not to use the drivers included in the box this time… … :lame:
Alright my computer wont stop restarting itself.
And if you guys can point at other suspects stuff, I’ll appreciate it.

You have a lot of stuff. I didn’t get to go through everything, but I stopped after I realized that I can’t think of any software that would cause your PC to reset. It’s probably a a glitch. Making your PC reboot isn’t of any use to anyone aside from a random prankster. Run msconfig and unload everything and if that fixes it add them back one-by-one until you find out which one causes the problem. Uninstall and then reinstall that application.
Things that I see right off the bat:
explorer.EXE should be explorer.exe (no caps)
2 Unnamed BHOs in there
You have a lot of AV programs running at once.
Thanks,your help was very appreciated.
Just wondering,C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE doesn’t show up on hijackthis.
So do I have to rename it manually?
CTL + ALT + Delete and see if there are two of them running.
I’m moving onto my college campus at the end of the month, and since my dorm is small enough, I’d rather not bring my TV. I am brining my PC though, so I might as well buy a good TV tuner card.
Aside from casually watching TV on it with little or no problem(not into recording it or anything), I’m mainly concerned about my XBOX360 working well with it. Any recommendations?

My laptop arrived today, I checked the running processes when I turned it on, there were 84.
Is it ok to have that many running?
Only one
it’s a lot of junk that companies include with it.
i suggest going through your add/remove programs and getting rid of anything and everything that you will never use.
Eh, well that sucks, thanks though.
it sucks yes, but it’s going to happen whenever you buy a retail computer.
Well now I have another problem.
Normally on my desktop I click USB mass storage in the task tray and then stop to disconnect my external HD. Now on this laptop, it won’t allow me to so is it safe to just pull out the USB cable? or is that not recommended?
