anybody know anyplace i can take the comp in and they could fix it for me?
Yes. I had this exact same problem, only it was my Razor gaming mouse. I had to uninstall any drivers I had installed and then go into safe mode and remove them there too. Had to go through the registry and remove any instance of the drivers too. Check with the manufacturer on how to do that.
Thanks for the response. I sorted it (amazingly). What I did was I made Windows choose a display adapter from a list and it then installed the drivers needed. I couldn’t believe it was as simple as that as I had read about vgasave mode and how it can be a nightmare. The display adapter I chose was nVIDIA geforce4 440 go which is different to my onboard card (488 go) but it has done the trick.
TheWanderer, so when you press F1 it doesn’t boot to windows or whatever OS you have? If it doesn’t it could possibly mean that windows has gotten corrupted. You could reload windows on the machine, that would be your best bet if it did fuck up. If you have the windows reinstallation disks try reloading windows on it. Maybe that might work.
Cool. Yeah, the Nvidia drivers pretty much cover every card they ever made all the way back to the TNT2s.
I was sitting on 300mb of space one of my parititioned drive for a long time. Today out of nowhere it jumps up to 3gb. What gives?
Sup guys i purchased this motherboard
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000IG775C/ref=ord_cart_shr/002-9828383-4917600?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance
and trying to get this graphic card
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000NGNRV0/ref=ord_cart_shr/002-9828383-4917600?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance
but while i was reading the review for the graphic card and i saw this
There are some minor issues with the new GeForce 8800 series cards. They have gotten about a half inch longer than the previous 7000 series cards. This caused an issue where one of the SATA ports on the testing motherboard was unable to be used. Before buying you may want to make sure there is sufficient clearance around the PCI Express graphics slot.
so if anyone know if the motherboard im getting will have a problem with the graphic card that im trying to get please PM me
thnx in advance
I have to swap out a hard drive for THIS machine --> http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-M2V-S310-Notebook-Pentium-Centrino/dp/B00021HQLS
I’m used to doing this on desktops, but laptops are a whole other can o’ worms. I have another HD already and I used Acronis TrueImage to back up all of the old data to an external portable drive.
-
How the hell do I get the old one out of there? Seriously, I’ve never owned a laptop (doing this is for a friend).
-
Can I just put the new one in and run TrueImage to recover the old data from a boot disk, or is it more complicated?
Need to do this within the next 5 hours, thanks in advance guys.
N
Hope this helps. Can’t say I’m an expert.
The Hard drive may be located under the keyboard and you will need to remove all the screws underneath and under the battery. Then there should be 2 ‘slide offs’ on each side of the monitor. Take these off and then prise off the strip with the power and IE explorer button (may be diffrent) and unscrew the keyboard and fold it back. The hard drive should be slightly to the right of the centre (I am only going from my own laptop). Just take out the old one and slot in the new one making sure everything is secure and all pins are connected otherwise it will not boot into an OS.
I would assume that you can just run the TrueImage and put everything all back on.
I have only done this HD removal on one laptop. I hope this can help you in some way.
EDIT: Just Remove the slide offs and unscrew the keyboard. That should give you access to the HD. The other screws are just incase you need to completely open it up.
I doubt this program will apply to any of you guys here, but I only recently found something pretty interesting for XP users who work in heavily-shared computer environments (LAN cafes, relatives’ kids come over and use your computer and shit, borrowed machines, etc.). This was previously released under different names, so if it’s not new to you, my bad.
Behold: Microsoft Steady State
Set up your machine to how you want it to be everytime you turn it on/reboot. Defrag your hard drive. Then install this bad boy; it has to create a giant ass cache file (which essentially creates a virtual boot record) on your hard drive. You enable the machine to discard all changes upon a reboot and bam – your machine is back to the state you had it before you enabled SteadyState. And to let changes stick? Just open up the menu, check “Allow changes”, and you’re good to go.
The shit is pretty slick. And if you’re in a situation where you need a PC to be the same way all the time without junk/spyware/whatever on it, then this is definitely one good way of keeping it that way. Only drawback with it is that damn cache file. But it’s necessary for the program to be awesome.
Highly recommended.
i dont know where my comp disks are. someboddy throww thee diskss in the trashh i thinkk. my bro call the company n tell them to send us the disks n shit it gonna cost us so i dunno what going on. cann u explain to me how it got corrupted? u were rite… it does say something about corrupted when i press F1. why is that/

'Q. I have a Pentium III (993MHz) with 128 MB RAM, 815 motherboard and Windows ?98 operating system. I have the following problems and hope you will solve them:
When I connect to the Internet, my Internet explorer works properly for 10 to 20 minutes but after that a message is displayed that states “Explorer is performing an illegal operation.” When I cancel this message, all opened Internet explorers shuts down and a message, “restore your desktop” is displayed on the desktop. When I click on this message, Wallpaper returns back on the desktop. And after that when I start the Internet explorer again it continues to perform without giving such problem again. Please tell me why this happens and what?s the solution. Secondly, my computer is infected by a virus which converts .jpg, .gif, and some other extension files into .exe files. Due to this virus, the options of control panel are not working. Please tell me how can I remove this virus completely from my computer. Is there a way by which I can get the infected files back in original form.
Vivan Gupta, Ludhiana
A. There could be many reasons to this kind of problem, however some of the most common causes are opening too many Internet Explorer Windows simultaneously, cache memory not free, corrupt Internet explorer file, etc. Now, in the absence of the information related to exact error message it is difficult to pinpoint the problem. However, generally speaking, please reboot the Windows after switching it off for some time, before you start using the Internet explorer. Second, do not open too many Internet Explorer Windows simultaneously and also other programs. Free up cache memory and disk memory by deleting the temporary files and other clutter from your PC. Ideally, this should solve your problem. Regarding the virus in your system, you must first clean boot your system using a clean (Virus free) Floppy disk/CD-ROM and then load the virus scanner to hunt down the virus present in your system. Regarding getting back your files is concerned, it would be difficult to retrieve them all, and can only be assessed after the virus removal.’

I’m running a machine with Windows XP pro SP2
Question: Whats up with Firefox 2.0? When it came out, I heard that it was a step back from 1.5.
Is it any better now? Should I make the leap from Firefox 1.5 to 2.0 or not?
I have been using Firefox 2 since it was in Beta. In all honesty, most of the changes between the two are aesthetic. Things mostly just look a little different here and there; I haven’t really noticed any huge differences in performance between the two. There were minor functionality changes, like adding a close button to each tab, but most features are the same between the two. If I were you, I would just give Firefox 2 a whirl and decide which one you prefer using.
