Complete "How to Change the Music in MVC2 + How to make your game selfboot" Thread

ok i know there are quite a few people out there who are having a little trouble with editing
so i figured i would take a response i sent to someone and use it to help the rest of you

ok well it all depends on the char you are trying to edit

they have their basic standard colors, the (LP,LK,HP,HK,A1,A2) but then there are the extra frames each character has extra frames for being hit by certain things and also when they do certain moves. Which char are you trying to edit. like lets start with ryu, alot of colors are tied in with certain parts of the body, look at the default palette and identify the colors of the body. The 1st one is a blank color, it goes to nothing
The 2nd one is the belt and headband
3rd-8th are his skin/ hair
9th is his eye color
10th is the hair as well
11-15 are his Gi colors
16-17 are his gloves
now that you have identified his colors, now you can select those sets of colors to edit
start with 11-15, click and drag from 11 to 15 it should select those colors with a red box around them, you can go to hue and mess with the to change the color, but if its white or black no changes will be made, you have to select saturation, that affects how much color is changed, turn it all the way up to find the color you want then adjust it to your liking. once you find a color you like then you can either leave it like that or adjust it a little bit more, with the lightness. that will either add more white or more black into the colors, be careful cause too much will make the transition between colors not look natural. so once you play around with it a little bit you might find a color that you like, sometimes there is a stray color in there, it happens from time to time. just select that color and adjust the hue saturation and lightness to make it fit, if you still cant get it, try and copy the nearest color to it and adjust the lightness to show a “seemless” transition between colors. it will take some time and patience to get the color the way you want, but its worth it

Then you want to rebuild the image like if you were editing the music, and load it up in NullDC, if you need i can send you a link to the VMU with all the unlocked chars. test out your char, do all his moves, supers, taunts, and hit reactions. if he changes colors then there is another palette that you need to edit, just play around with it till you find it. Im trying to label the palette numbers according to thier color, looooooong process. But one thing i do is when they start changing colors i do the move that makes them change and try and Screenshot it or pause it on that frame, fraps works pretty good for the screenshooting. then have that open in the background and cycle through your chars palettes look for the matching colors. but be aware of its position, if you are editing LP make sure the palette is the first in the series… let me explain.
ok im editing the LP color of storm but she keeps changing between colors. so i go through the palettes and i see a pattern coinciding with the colors as such
LP=grey/silver
LK=pink/silver
HP=yellow/silver
so the palettes start looking like this
(-grey/silver, slightly darker grey/silver, dark grey/silver, pink, blue, orange, black, black

  • pink/silver, slightly darker pink/silver, dark pink/silver, pink, blue, orange, black, black
  • yellow/silver, slightly darker yellow/silver, dark yellow/silver, pink, blue, orange, black, black, etc…)
that might be the color changes during her lightning attack, so what ever color changes you made should be reciprocated here but in the pattern they have here
so like me i made a crimson/blood red storm, i would paste those colors, on the first grey/silver of the chain, then paste it on the slightly darker grey/silver but select the entire palette and use the lighten to darken my new color to match the original and do the same for the dark grey/silver. i know that might sound confusing but its the simplest way i can put it with out pictures.

im pretty spread out right now with this project, but i will have a decent tutorial written up in time… but the key word is time.
as well as videos, and if someone can try and put up a site for us so we can kind of compile all our knowledge/pictures/palettes into it. I will answer all your questions when i read them.

ok well thats all i can think of right now

yeah but the thing is the stages are 3d and it would require alot to just amke them 2d or even find what format the stages are in, they could just be like a 3d studio format, or maya, we cant really tell just yet. but it would be cool

but im afraid people will try and edit the effects of the moves and chars… no lag on certain moves making them easy infinites and all that
but it could make the capcom side a little more balanced, it could go either way

i hope play with all chars with new color and any gltich yet

well the only glitches were from Metrock changing files names, but other then that the only “glitches” are from the palettes color changes

I’m all for hacking to make it more balenced.

MvC2: Rainbow edition anyone :looney:

Imagine homing Hadoukens with 0 recovery frames v.s. Storm

the hadoukens maybe like 2 frames less, but zero recovery would make it possible to make a stream of Hadoukens… very cheap
look at akumas air hadou it has about 3-4 frames of lag after
imagine what it would be like if he had no lag… he wouldnt need that super hadou in the air, because he would be able to do it without expending a super
def cut the lag on ryus super hadou cause he is up there long enough for sentinel to WALK over there and launch
really just cut the lag on probably %60 of the capcom characters
cause thats what makes them low tier is there lag after everything
Ryu should have alot more priority
i mean the god of fighting games has been reduced to almost crap

bleh

my strider edits. http://s223.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/shoultzula/

whats up with those alternate colors past the original 6?

thats nice but the blue on the inside of his left leg and inside of his left forearm seems a little off
keep up the edits though, oh yeah dont forget that colossus is one of those multi palettes chars
his shining armor makes editing a bit of a hassle at first

well those are like when he gets hit by lightning fire and when he activates his specials… we are still finding out what exactally all those are
its a time consuming process, im thinking some of them are his tigers and hawks
but i will look into it and show ya what i come up with, just stick with the main edits unless you feel good enough to try and edit those… just remember they dont have the same palette effects as strider, so it could be on like 2 diff palettes
i have all day to mess with it and mess with it i shall

i will be off and on here while im checking stuff
so keep checking back throughout the day

Yeah, I’m working on organizing this and making some kind of system, thanks for the critique, Big3D. i’ll post final stuff sometime in the future, i was just messing with the colors.

Haha, 3D training is so awesome…well after seeing the same angles for like 7 years

Use ALT+PRINTSCREEN instead for in-focus-window-only screen shots.

I finally got a chance to play with the tool a bit on the plane ride back home. I would love to get the palettes for Mephisto (MvSF), black Spiderman, US Agent (MvSH), Hyper War Machine (both colors, MvC1), and Shadow Lady (MvC1). I’m going to go look at MvC1’s gameplay images and my MvC1 disc layout itself when I get home. But that won’t have Mephisto or USAgent. Did MvSF come out for Dreamcast? I sadly think it only came out for Saturn, but don’t recall for sure. Regardless…

Anyways, the attachment here was what I tried on the plane. My favorites are white Dan, reverse black CapCom, and blacker Megaman. I really suck at this kind of thing, though, but it’s just fun to play with. I definitely learned a lot through looking at how Suupabuu changed stuff - that’s why I put those files on my site. It will probably take a while for me to really grok it. Right now I’m just trying to learn how to do this nearly as well as he’s done.

I don’t know how we can effectively send each other colors… ? Obviously we can send whole files to each other, but then to merge we’d need to individually copy color assignments between files. Hm.

nice edits
but sadly megaman is the worst one to edit
trust me i tried, for now i put him on the side due to anyone actually wanting a custom color for him
Ill see what i can do about a better looking armor spiderman, us agent, mephesto, and hyper warmachine and such
if i can get a picture of them i can do it no problem, i just cant remember that well what they all look like

oh hey check out my strider edits

Your white Cable suit is way better than mine…
I like the bumblebee (yellow/black) Magneto in the Suupabuu edits on my site a lot better than blue/yellow Magnus since that’s what the XvSF sprite looked like TMK. I like how we both wanted that kind of color scheme. A man after my own heart.
I like your Colossus grey bodysuit, but I would use a different shade of red. That particular shade looks strangely like Ghostbuster 2 ectoplasm to me.
I think Dan and Charlie are going to be hard to make look bad. What a great job they did on those guys. Capcom sprites seemed to get a lot more color love.
Row likes your green Sentinel.
I looked at Guile, but most of his colors look pretty good already. Same with Strider. Somebody (Clock?) mentioned a pink Strider would be good though?

I like some of the ideas of what you’ve done, but I think the non-“realistic” colors would be a little too distracting for me. My design goal so far is to have it look seamless. I will likely fail.

I would enjoy stealing your colors for blackred Colossus and the white Cable.

no problem man
thanks for the props
yeah the blue yellow mag was my buddies color of choice
but for colossus ill have to send you the bin file… he has several palettes and im sure it will be a little easier for you if you wanted to edit them further.
just hit me up on AIM
BigInitialD
i might not get to you immediatly but ill get to ya

preppy: that white\black mando is looking crazy and wtf is wrong with megamans eyes.:rofl:I noticed that shit too when I was digging through all the sprites earlier.

which zombie look? on cable or strider?

As regards Megaman’s eyes, I think they’re reusing his mouth color + black for the blinking he does… ? Color 14 is his eyelids TMK.

Yeah, the extra palettes makes a lot of this interesting. I’m very OK with a 80-90% solution though.

yeah thats how far i am with storm
about 90% but i still am trying to fix her lightning storm palettes

Preppy - I thought Bumblebee in your Evo disc looked a little odd so I checked…
http://youtube.com/watch?v=NzGhNGn-bYA (~50 sec in)
XSF Magneto was totally yellow and blue. The NASA Sentinel was fantastic though.

Big3D - If you’re bored (ha), how about Shadow-Lady-style Team Z? (Pink SL, not blue…) Those green accents were hot. Also - Preppy has no requests for Megaman? I’m surprised.

Random question - do we know anything about how they are doing palette effects, and whether it would be possible to add/remove them? Is it just in the palette data file (like color X goes from A to B over some time), or is it in the character’s states themselves?

Mike Z

Probably states themselves… possible but tough.

Remember guys… if you want, you can copy and paste palettes through text.
