Comics In The '90s: Did Anything Good Come Out?

How can you be hating on the 90s?!?!?!?!

That’s when the greatest artist/writers ever, Rob Liefield showed up!

Fixed for ya.

BTW what’re ur thoughts on Age of Apocalypse? I can understand the whole ‘optimism-less world ruled by a sadistic mutant’ reality even tho it does have a ‘cliche’ vibe to it.

The rise of superstar artists was a big problem in that era. Spiderman and X-Men were basically created as vehicles for McFarlane and Jim Lee. It was short-term thinking at it’s finest, McFarlane left after 18 issues or so and then there was no point in Spider-Man even existing any more. (At that point there was Amazing, Web and Spectacular already) Then you had Uncanny and X-Men, and at that point X-Factor was basically the X-Men as well. There didn’t appear to be any long-term plan for how these books fit into the line. I believe that New Mutants (which I liked) got blown up and remade into X-Force for Liefield as well.

Basing comics around creative teams rather than concepts is generally a poor idea.

I really enjoyed AoA but on srk at least i’m probably the minority on that.

AoA has not aged well IMO.

I have all the gold covered trades of AoA.

Although I could never find the gold covered Alpha and Omega, so the regular editions had to do :frowning:

Morrison’s JLA run reigned over everything.

Clone Saga sucked under everything.

deadpool is a product of the 90s. therefore the 90s kicked ass

It was all about Image and their zillions of hot chick characters.

i miss holographic, die-cut, fold out covers

I read AoA for the first time two years ago or so when the Complete AoA trades were released. I think it holds up remarkably well, and I would go as far to say it is definitely the best X-crossover by a mile. There was so much up-and-coming talent behind it, the art was great, and the story really fit together well in all of the books. There was great pay-offs near the end and just so many moments of cool.

I definitely think you have the most unpredictable reading tastes out of everyone I’ve ever encountered, P.Gabby. Sometimes I can’t tell if you are serious or sarcastic, so I just take your word for it.

You’re… UNPREDICTABLE BABY

I liked AoA, but I’m a stickler for alternate reality crap (Exiles fan here).

Anyone mention the horrible trend of putting Mullets on just about anyone? I love AoA, but damn did it have Mullets >_>

Most characters from this time period I hate. Carnage? Hate the bitch. 2099 and all related crap? Hate it. Spawn’s sudden rise in popularity with sub par stories? Hate it.

Seriously this is the worst comic period, hopefully time doesn’t repeat itself in this process, but most people are fed up of those fucking year long events every year that try to “Shake things up”. If the next year long event doesn’t have every villain in the Marvel AND DC universe anally raping Tony Stark while the hottest fictional chicks giggle and remark about his small penis size then fuck the next one.

The 90’s was an era where it was proven that uber-anti-heroes with dark alleys and trenchcoats can become as ridiculous as 1960’s camp… but except for Rock, the 90’s as a decade pretty much sucked for me so it’s only natural that comics followed the trend.

hey! dont knock the 90s, it produced one of my favorite one shots- Silver Surfer vs Dracula

The 90s had some good stuff. The Silver Surfer series was great(technicall started late 80s,but whatever),Sleepwalker was good, Morbius was good…the 2099 stuff was kind of cool…what else…The Thor series was good…ummm…X-Men…thats about it.

I liked AoA too and I was liking Exiles til they change writers and now are going with the long ‘‘wind story lines’’ with weak pay-offs. ( the Exiles with Evil Silver Surfer were pretty nice though. I wondered how the hell were they going to beat this guy with earth already destroyed and the heroes are dead.) Deadpool rocks yeeeaaahhh!!! lol.

This will be more of a Superman rant rather than a 90’s rant, but hopefully it’ll be relevant enough to be on this thread. If not, then hopefully Sano will let it slide.

I loved Superman in the 90’s, but I bet it’s because I’m brainwashed. But still, I think Jurgens, Immonen, Kesel, and even Bogdanove added charming and [positively and negatively] memorable moments to the Superman mythos. I guess the main reason I like it is because it was always a gamble the moment one gets past the cover. It could either be a really, really good issue and/or story arc (especially if it was written by Jurgens), or a really, really bad issue and/or story arc (which Bogdanove and to a lesser extent Mahnke nailed down to perfection). I could mention lots of memorable issues, but that’s something for the Superman thread.
The thing that really got me hooked on Superman was its strong supporting cast. It was as much fun following the Daily Planet and its staff, struggling - and inevitably failing - to not get bought out by Lexcorp; Emil Hamilton and his deus ex machina inventions and Dubbilex wielding the Moebius Chair, as it was seeing Superman save the day.

Alas, it went downhill around the late 90’s when Man Of Energy was introduced. They got rid of it eventually, and Superman got back on its feet, and even went through a second, minor golden age (the first one was after Death And Return Of Superman), especially around the time they had the Superman Rex story arc.
Anyway, to keep it short - because I feel I’ve ranted enough - all the magice was lost right at the end of the 90’s and early into the 2000’s. Jurgens and the rest of the crew left, and were replaced by Loeb and Kelley. The art in the main Superman comic was horrible and Loeb’s and Kelley’s biggest mistake was not paying attention to the supporting cast. Their lack of experience with the Superman franchise seeped through every panel. Emil Hamilton, Perry White, and even Jimmy Olsen, took a few steps away from the spotlight, and they were the lucky ones. All the other ones more or less faded away without any reason and Clark Kent himself, and his alter ego, felt decharactized and generic.
Suddenly, the Superman mythos felt empty, and that’s when the 90’s ended for me.
Fortunately, it seems to get back on its feet nowadays, with great writers like Busiek and Johns. Anyway, I think the best thing about the 90’s was that it was more cartoony and charicaturized (if that’s a word). I don’t mind comics nowdays, heck they’re better than ever, but sometimes, they feel too “real”, down-to-earth and vivid as if they don’t want to acknowledge the campy, unreal, action-oriented, not-so-vivid aspect of comics, which had been around up until the end of the 90’s.

As much as we all hate the Clone Saga, it did make way for one of my favorite series, Spider-Girl. So some good things can come from disasters.

Yeah the current Exiles issues are hit or miss really, until I hear something big from it I probably won’t get another issue anytime soon.
