Hey all. I have a few questions and gripes. I will admit, I get a decent amount of wins, but purely on fast muscle memory of some moves. I seriously lack (at this time) what it takes to totally master the combo system in this Street fighter installment. The timing is too strict for me. In practice its all good, but when it comes to the real game then I find my lack of timing often interrupted by some type of SRK move or a command throw. I am also an adrenaline filled player. Meaning no matter who I play my heart races making all my movements faster than normal. Probably why I use fast characters.
How do YOU master your combos?
What character have good block strings? The toons I use don’t seem to have good ones.
I use Adon, Cammy, and Fei Long. I used to use ryu, but it seems that alot of people want to use him. Tried Akuma, but he doesn’t seem as Akuma-ish as he should be. Tried Makoto…that was an Epic FAIL. I’ve tried alot of characters. I refuse to use a charge character. I can’t stand my primary position being the BACK or down-back position.
Well, for your first point the answer you’ll be getting a lot is keep practicing Use training mode first and then try to make trainingmode-combos actual battle-combos by using them versus other people.
You just practice it to the point where you can just say “Ok brain do combo X” then it comes without thinking about the subtleties of the timing. 1-frame links can still give any human trouble from time to time. Most characters have block strings you just have to look them up or figure them out. After you’ve played those normal characters for a while you should pick up a charge character, it will add a new found enjoyment to the game.
Lastly, calm down during a match. Once you play more you’ll be a lot less stressed and more focused on the important aspects of the game. You’ll also find that winning isn’t always everything. You are going to come across players that are just out of your league, give it your best shot and learn as much as possible from those matches. That’s how you get better in a nutshell.
st jab and crouching jab link to cr fierce-> into any dam move you want
also she now has 2 cross ups so you should get a lot of practice against online scrubs
the thing with sakura, dont rely on any specials unless they are in a combo or for tick damage and pressure.
cr fierce for aa
another tactic is high stamina char like honda
i mean you learn his jumpign fierce both forward and neutral
and st roundhouse
you dont need much more to beat scrubs. just time the jumps right
and even if you eat a combo ro two, you got lots of health and deal lots of damage.
plus gay tactic, online with delay, your headbutt will hit cause the delay wont let them block!
if you dont knwo what this stuff means, then read more posts about combos and strategy.
the reason people all use ryu is prob cause they are like you, new to the game want to win and learn how to play, and quite frankly , ryu is there best bet. (sometimes sagat)
so go ahead pick ryu if it helps you learn the game.
This is a “choose my character for me” with a not-so-clever disguise. I’ll shuffle this over to Saikyo hoping someone can answer the first part of your question (if it was genuine).
Whoa whoa whoa…what is it about the online gaming community that make responses so crappy. In not trying to be all butt hurt…but c’mon. If every character WORKED then there wouldn’t be a tier system. There are play styles that work for some and don’t work for others. You wouldn’t play Dhalsim like you would play Zangief. I can’t just ask how YOU practice without some funny responses? LOL. There isn’t a good player match mode so putting the combos to affect suck in ranked because you lose points. In endless you turn can take a long time to finally come up. And in team…well you might not even get to play if the person before you wins all the matches.
Thanks to everyone who gave some decent advice. Thats all I asked for was advice.
before you practice combos, make sure you have a proper and decent way to comfortably hold the the joystick (if you play on a pad, switch). judging from your comment that SSFIV combo timing was ‘too strict’, i’m assuming you are new to the fg genre, because every other iteration of street fighter had way stricter timing and even less leniency…but know that if your combos aren’t coming out right, you’re either mashing, or your inputs are not being put in properly (which is hard to do with all the shortcuts and aforementioned leneincy). so first, figure out how you want to position your hands. a great example is on the most recent videos of jwong giving tutorials on the new characters. there’s a window showing his hands and how he positions them. his motions aren’t exaggerated, but are instead quick, smooth and minimal. he also pianos, and is able to perform motions and moves on both sides of the screen.
once you can do that, THEN you can start practicing combos.
I can execute the special move pretty good. I’ve been playing fight games since SF2 and this game has some of the strictest timing as far as combos go. There isn’t much rhythm to it. Did the combo system just fine in mortal combat series. Did it great in the Blaz Blue and Guilty Gear games. Tekken I owned that one. Didn’t play Third Strike as much as the other games, but I still was able to grasp it pretty good. But SF4 seems to be the one that I just cannot get. Maybe I’m getting old. Does 29 = Old?
