Hey Colorado! I used to go to school in Boulder and will be swinging through for a visit next week. Any casuals happening in Boulder/Denver area during the week? I play mainly AE, and am a current resident of the Portland Oregon scene (Best Bout Gaming). Thanks for any info!
Let me tell you guys a bit about myself, since you obviously won’t know who I am. I’ve been running Smash tournaments for the past few years in the South. I played it competitively, and I have an incredible appreciation for every competitive scene out there for games. I moved to Denver at the start of this month, and I was immediately looking to revitalize the Smash Scene [It was dead]. I have accomplished that, and in my quest for a venue, I found a place that also decided that it wanted to employ me as an Event Coordinator based on my past experience [20+ tournaments, some with over 70 players.] The location is in Southlands Mall, and it’s a new business called Game Shack. They have around +70 consoles, arcade machines, laser tag, and actual food. This place is massive. Imagine if you will, a smaller Best Buy, and you’ve more or less have a grasp on the size of the venue.
I’m looking to do a few things:
- Weekly Fight Nights.
- Monthly Events for all the major fighting games in the area.
- Elo driven power rankings for every game. This ensures the best seeding possible at events.
- Streaming of all the events through their 100mbs internet pipeline.
- Regional events with sponsorships every six months.
I’m still working on hammering out the dates and the financial side of the events. I don’t anticipate it being higher than $5 dollars for the venue fees for the tournaments, and for the weeklies, I’ll see what I can do.
Every week, I want to have a night where the competitive scene / fighting game enthusiasts all will show up to the venue and play together. I had a friend that ran these at a Lan Center in New Orleans, and they were a tremendous success despite the limited space that he had to run them. By having a visible location and allowing scenes to intermingle, you can strengthen your scenes by having players more likely to play in more events. Beyond that, by having a headcount for all the tournaments/weeklies, I’ll be able to leverage the numbers with sponsors to get us additives to the pot. The owners are willing to allow me to discuss with other businesses to even get displays from those companies to be put at their store.
Once I have all the details, I’m going to create flyers for the events that will be passed out at the very least by the Smash Scene to schools and their local gaming circles. I would hope to get the same reception here. Aside from that, I need to know what games are popular in the area, and what are the current player counts on average that would attend an events for each game. For that, I need your help.
You can do me a major favor by liking the Facebook page for Game Shack. This will aid in generating more potential tournament entrants for the various events that I plan on running. The more players that are aware of this venue, the better possibilities we will have in the future.
I know most of you are up in Denver, but there is about 8 of us now doing Friday Night Fights every other Friday in SW Colorado. If any of you are interested, hit me up and I can give you info (we do it at different people’s houses as there’s not a central space).
