I actually just went on a win streak using Cole/Hwoarang (first ever streak) and lots of things were just clicking like they hadn’t before. I even finished a round with the J.HP HP Hampcombo c.lp mp Lightning Hook for the first time ever to avoid a time out loss. Wish I had it recorded for posterity.

But after a while they began to have my number. Once people expect the Drop to go over their fireballs they get good at baiting it, and I could do practically nothing to a Raven that just jumped backwards and threw shurikens.

Good to hear that! I believe you should try a combo like j.hp, s.hp xx HP amp xx tag in Hwoarang, cr.mk(or cr.hp or whatever strongest normal you have you can cancel) into either:
A: HK triple air kick
B: EX Triple air kick and whatever you can follow after that.
C: HK triple air kick xx tag in Cole s.hp xx HP lightning hook
D: HK triple air kick xx tag in Cole s.hp xx EX shockwave, s.hp xx HP hook

I believe option C would be the best damage and meter wise would be good, especially since you can raw tag in safely hwoarang after the hook, unless your Cole got no more health then go for either A or B.

About the second part of your post, I don’t use drop too often since I think it’s way too risky and I prefer to play a safe game. Against fireball spamming dudes, just begin to zone with the HP/MP shock grenade, usually calms them down and you’ll be able to mix up between shock grenade and drop. And remember that you can cancel the thunder drop into a tag in and try to get Cole out safely by putting on some pressure.

it was getting old too, cause i run cole with marduk and i would AA gator slam everyone with marduk, but get jumped in on all day with cole lol

Don’t worry. I’ve been doing nothing but Cole the past few days and I lose more than I win, even against those with similar ranking. I did have some moments of brilliants myself today, when I was actually winning thanks to Cole. Once I know how to approach with Hwoarang more than jump in or random jab, I’ll start taking the Ranked scene.

No matter how much I search I actually cannot find any Cole matches from Europe, I tried sneaking a peak at some of yours. I’ll say that every time I’ve tried to find Cole through Character Channel I’ve yet to get anyone better than me, and I’m not saying that as a compliment to me >>. I’ve caught a few in recent logs though, nothing we do not already know though. What bugs me is that even the people with thousands of BP are not gemming their Cole in spite his partner having them. Many a time today I’ve seen pretty experienced Cole’s drop matches when a simple Fortitude would have saved him.

Is there a way for a friend to see the replays saved by another friend? That way every blue moon I have a great match we might be able to use it, or you can at least look at some of the better players I’ve collected from.

We’ve been through this already, but do any of Cole’s moves mixup? I guess the standard jmk, but it is not too consistent.

We’ve not really discussed it much to my knowledge, but does Cole have any move to protect his wakeup game, or anything that can reliably safely tag cancel? I got nothing for the first, and thunder drop is cancellable but very risky. Landed grenades and maybe even blocked shockwaves can protect a switch, but there’s no combo potential unless you wallbounce the shockwave. If only Amp Combo was multi-hit while canceling it’d have a use.

shew cole is probly my 5th char right now… but i am gonna try to rotate and improve with him slowly over time until i feel more solid

fortitude from… getting attacks blocked(?)
fortitude taking two specials
80 health recovery taking two specials

marduk
attack 10%
fortitude
80 health all from taking two specials

this team is tankish but dont tell anyone lol…
basically if i mess up in a fireball war or eat a combo, thats gonna be two specials. i figure with 100 (+80 guarenteed) free health for cole you have to make use of it… so i go in balls out lol if you build some moment with rushdown cole it snowballs… and fast. im not super consistent but id say it works pretty well

standard constant zoning till a fortitude lands, then ill go in. i use cr.mp x2 for, i think, some solid hitconfirm combos, jabs into launcher/shock grenade, mix in that godly j.hp when they get jumpy. and i like using shock grenade kinda like bad stone with its good recovery.

like a blocked j.mk, cr.mp xx qcb.lp, cr.mk xx qcb.hp
just to mess with people cus they dont know how to take cole in their face

but when you think you got them, mix in that risky lk thunder drop
so like j.mk, cr.mp xx qcb.lp, cr.mk xx hcf.lk (tag marduk) j.hp, cr.mp, hp gator throw for great damage

seriously i get aggressive with the thunder drop! i want that massive tag damage.
j.mk, cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.mk xx hcf.lk tag (just another example)

not super safe but this cole has the health to be aggressive. also every untagged special you do knocks them back across the screen to work through some zoning… making me more sorta hit and run i guess.
marduk adds some real solidity and damage, while hiding his weakness against zoning with cole. and is strong on his own. beastmode when you trip all 3 of his gems at once!

i think of the colester as a high risk/reward char first, WITH the amazing ability to zone.
my weakness is lack of meter, so i cant ever afford to waste any
and letting cole get pressured first, which is why i firmly believe you get aggressive with his ass
and execution :stuck_out_tongue:

im no pro, this is just my take on cole after always getting beat by zoning (which is hard) for almost an entire round until rufus gets in once and kills you

About the thread, you don’t have to rush things. Take your time.

And yes, like in SSF4 you can see the replays saved by a friend in the replay channel.
You can use cr.lk(low), cr.mk(low), forward hp(high) and j.mk to mix up your game. Remember that you can’t combo anything after forward hp, unless CH and you can cancel forward hp into a tag in to feel safe.

I don’t think he has any wakeup options. Usually the best you can do is block. I try sometimes to use EX thunder drop as a reversal and as a gamble of hit or be hit on wakeup though.

Also, I don’t think I’ll be able to do and record ranked matches today either, headache is still there sorry. I don’t want to mess up online either so playing online with my headache (and newly acquired toothache, great isn’t it?) so I’ll either play offline to find stuff or play another offline game.

Not a problem. The fact we’re putting effort into Cole in the first place implies casualness, so do not let it take precedence over resting your head, other games, or even playing other characters. I think any training for me tonight will be on improving team synergy between Cole and Hwoarang (particularly tag cancels and combos), and starting the longterm Cole of how to switch into offensive Cole to keep the enemy on the run. I play him so lame; I do really well in the first half of a first match, but then I continue to hang back and let the opponent slowly dictate terms. That cannot happen.

I notice that cole also is a good candidate for pandora sacrificing.
“launch combo into cole, normal xx ex shockwave” launches a dude pretty high up.

I tried a quick pandora into ryu super which worked out pretty well. The damage was about the same as just a normal cancel into coles super when tagged in, but hey i’m not a combo expert, and maybe with the pandora gems the damage would be more significant. (let alone any future pandora technology to be discovered)

Right now I think the only Pandora combos that get press are the ones that deal 100% damage, but those are super risky. Always wanted for Cole to have a Pandora option, it’s just one more piece of tech to pull out of the toolbox in times of need. I’m not a combo master either but I’ll try to make some headway in this tonight, thank you very much for the information!

Right now I’m not doing so much Cole specifics as overall techniques to get better: maximizing meter efficiency, learning high-low combos to mess up guards, wake-up games, etc. I’m willing to experiment with anything anyone wants me to do though.

Did not know why I did not see this sooner, and sorry if common knowledge, but Shockwave is a great move to finish blocked strings with, its like its only use. It pushes them far enough away that very few people can punish it.

Oh? It seemed particularly unsafe everytime I tried. I usually end my blockstring into a LP nade to get a counter hit if the dude tries anything not invincible.
