Cody

ok i don’t really get how to approach this fight i am not used to it yet but whats the best way to approach a cody player : /

Don’t spam jab / OS tech if they’re on you doing counter-hit setups like most Cody’s do. They’re looking for it and know a lot of dumb balrogs mash these two a lot. Be patient as eventually he’ll be pushed back. If he’s using f+mp to stay in your face, learn some patterns he does and make a smart EX Headbutt to get him off you. This is before he has ultra preferably so your risk/reward is more in your favor (if he baits it out). Block his crossup and just knock him down. His options on wakeup are ASS. Let me repeat, ASS. He has EX Zonk to beat a meaty throw and that’s it. OS a backdash with a meaty jab, jab+roundhouse and just continue your OWN jab / counter-hit setups / throw setup pressure.

For zoning, beware all his ruffian kicks destroy your EX rush punches, so don’t even try it from 3/4 screen I’d say. Also jumping in always gets beat by his back+mp so don’t unless it’s on his wakeup. Smart Cody’s will bait out a dash + ultra if they know you’re going for it with the fake rocks (especially blatantly at the end of rounds) so beware.

But seriously, don’t spam jab or OS tech on wakeup or during his strings. Stay at midish to close range and use your better longer-range normals to punish any whiffs and get in with safe light dash punches. I find most cody’s pick ultra 2 against me which punishes almost anything unsafe (LP rush punches, sweep on block, etc.)

Also I believe certain blockstrings where the Cody gets lazy and ends in a LP/MP/HP criminal upper are punishable by ultra/other punishes. Try it out.

Just my thoughts / experience.

yeah the biggest problem i have are his block strings i usually have a hard time getting out of them and when he gets a knock down he is like extra annoying

Try back dash every now and then when he’s getting to far and need do f+mp to get in again. I find that with cody it’s very important to get some space between you and Cody because his frame traps are just too good and once he notices you’re not OS teching he will start to throw you a lot and with every throw you have to deal with cross-up, another throw, c.lk, CH setup with EX rocks and neutral jump.

The way I’ve always handled Codys was just constant pressure. Although cody is a pretty solid character as far as defending and his overall strength, like demonofelru said, his wakeup game is straight ass. He’s got EX zonk, wakeup ultra, backdash, block, grab, and that sand thing. That’s pretty much all he’s got. All of which can be punished accordingly.

Most Codys can’t handle constant offense, especially coming from a Rog, so apply it as much as possible. Rog’s jump in roundhouse and neutral fierce have great priority. Whenever deciding to jump in, use those. Timed correctly and it can work out great. You do it a little early, and I’m pretty sure it’ll beat his anti air, and if he tries an EX zonk, do it a little late to have a guaranteed block. His jump Rh beats moves like Flashkicks and SRKs if timed correctly so use that to your advantage.

Look at it this way, I’ve played a lot of characters so I know which ones are essentially the same. Rog, Cody, Fei Long are in a group of characters. They all can defend pretty well, but they can also be offensive tanks. Apply as much pressure as possible. Mix him up, but don’t do anything unsafe. Especially if you’re playing online. There isn’t anyone online who’s afraid to mash so be careful of that when doing resets and unsafe combos. The best pressure you can apply to a Cody is probably safe jump ins, and sit crouched less than half the screen away from him. Keep doing light rush punches. Too close, they can be punished, but if they just barely tap him, it’ll provide chip and keep you safe.

Holy shit I typed a lot. Haha.
