Cody Vers. 2012 Changes

I like the knife not dropping period during any type of FA or FADC and throw tech. come on Capcom.

As well as not dropping the knife after one little dink, Cody should start every round with the knife and you can drop it if you want. If Capcom want us to use it then they really need to try harder than they currently are.

Other than Cody’s lack of defensive options and his slow walk speed, does he have any other particular weaknesses though?

“lack of defensive options” is way beyond enough lol +ass backdash
also he has literally no special offensive mixup other then an overhead, which is poor IF you consider him an offensive character.

To be fair, he does have a variety of useful AA options and pokes no? Not to say there won’t be situations where he does get knocked down but most opponents are going to have to work hard to make that happen.

When you say special offensive mixup, I’m assuming you’re saying he doesn’t have specials like EX Tatsu or an SRK? That would be a weakness for sure since his offense would be lacking that threat but given his already strong frame-trapping normals it wouldn’t be a glaring one.

Cody wasn’t meant to be an offensive character in the first place, that’s why I say IF you consider him an offensive character like cammy, makoto, twins, rufus etc
they all have some kind of pressure moves and mixup options like dive kicks, command grabs and mixup moves such as cannon dive or axe kick.
cody was meant to be an all round character, like ryu for instance. he simply lacks mixup up close, and frame traps aren’t a real mixup thing, it’s simply a gambling that your opponent presses a button, and he has not very strong frame traps, due to the rather big gaps. what makes him so dangerous is that once he lands one it leads into huge damage and stun. high risk / high reward-style, which somehow works to a degree. he also has the necassary tools to be an all around character, average health, pokes and zoning tools (rocks) and strong anti airs and even defense options (ex cu, ex zonk), but those turned out to be rather crappy.
if you consider this, he has the same options as ryu (loseley spoken) but instead of being overall good / average in every department he is rather bad in many average in some and very good in one.

fcuking THIS^

Basically Cody has to work to open his opponent up for the high damage/stun. Problem is frame traps don’t work on players who actually block. So now that Cody’s main “pressure” tool is out the window, Cody has to, in a sense, be really gimmicky or take unnecessary risk to open up an opponent. Also doesn’t help once he scores a knockdown, Cody’s scare factor is pretty much reset or just flat out gone.

The knife would definitely help considering it does chip damage but where it should help ends up being helpless once a simple jab or short knocks it out. Meaning you have to take the time to pick up the knife again and not get jabbed again.

That’s why you keep throwing them until they do press buttons.

So far, the buffs are really a mixed bag. I really like the new tools he is getting, but the idea of him being top tier and every tier whore former Yun player (because they’ve liked him since 3S) in the game switching to him* (because they’ve liked him since Final Fight)* gives me nightmares :frowning:

Then I’m going to have to be a hipster and tell everyone that I really liked Cody before everyone else thought he was cool . . .

nerfs? Oo top tier? Oo
cody will remain middle tier and there won’t be any influnce on the player base. professional players that mained yun will either stick with him (seriously he’s still very good) or switch to another top tier. players that like him due to his style will stick to him aswell.
only the a famous high level vanguard player such as momochi that succeeds with him can put cody in a new spotlight which can bring some players to cody. but seeing as it’s only momochi, and then even only as secondary character (tho I hope myself that he’ll main him with ver.2012) he will have the same impact that gamerbee had on the adon player base, which on the long run wasn’t that big.

I swear I’ve been saying that Cody wasn’t an offensive character from the start and a lot of people were saying he was o.O

Anyway, yeah he isn’t an offensive character and he can do everything pretty much average (zoning, pokes, anti-airs, rushdown) but “he has not very strong frame traps due to the rather big gaps” <— what? He has a true string, 1 frame frame traps, 2 frame frame traps, 3 frame frame traps, 4 frame etc, the “big gap” during frame traps is not a universal Cody thing it’s you not frame trapping properly. The reason his frame traps are so scary is because the damage he can get off a counterhit anything from c.MP (can link into U2, c.HP, c.HK) to a s.HP.

His mixup up close isn’t “lacking” either. Just because it’s not ‘dive kick, dive kick, throw’ doesn’t mean it’s not good. Players will ALWAYS press buttons they always try and tech whether they’re pro or not. Landing a counterhit is a direct correlation of player skill and your ability to make the opponent press buttons or NOT press buttons. The throw/EX Zonk/frame trap mixup is scary and I’m sure if you asked any of the top UK players they would tell you.

The way I see it is Cody has great anti-airs, great zoning, great frame traps, great pokes and average health (even though I think he should have above average) and above average stun but HEAVILY lacks in defensive options. I also think Cody isn’t mid tier but bottom of the top tiers or top of the high-mid tier characters. His explosive damage is no joke lol, kinda like Sakura.

Typo* lol, meant buffs
But I mean, he’s getting quite a few buffs. I’m not specifically talking about high level play (although I’d love to see a Cody in Top 32) I’m talking more on the mirror matching 50 Cody’s when I try to play online :stuck_out_tongue:

You’re not gonna see 50 Codys because of his shit defense, bandwagon people don’t deal with glaring weaknesses well…kinda defeats the purpose of a bandwagon lol.

You don’t like Cody mirror match?
Why?

I dislike any mirror match. Not sure why, I’ve just never been a fan of mirrors.

to maintain pressure he simply needs to take a risk and a gap in his offense. the moment you get spaced and need to c.mk. f.mp, rock, jump, f.hk etc leaves you vurlnerable. if you combo these after any c.lp, c.mp, c.lk or whatever, leaves you widely open. This is what I mean, speaking of he has not the best frame traps (compared to sakuras s.lp forward moonwalk for instance). where he shines is right in your face within the cl.mp and cl.hp distance. this stuff is freakingly crazy.

and IF (not the capital letters) cody was meant to be an offensive character (which we seem to agree that he was not, but is seen by the communty due to the lack of defense) he is simply bad at it and lack the tools other characters can resort to, for offensive mixup.
with no guard crush, players can simply block till they see any opening. I know a few patience players that drive me crazy, yet I’m the same against rushdown style bision players. block, block, block, ready to tech throw, look for opening. it works against him, as it works against cody. ex zonk 50/50 game can be anticipated and countered easily and can be blocked aswell with late tech. it does work, but is no key factor in winning.

I think there are loosely 3 archtypes in a characters strength. Offense, Defense and Zoning. You can put every character in the game under one of those as their maintype, or can consider them rather equaly parted in all three.
Offense: Mixup, Overhead, Command Grab, Damage, Stun, Crossups, Comboabillity, Rushdown maintaining abillitiers, Reset Options, good Oki game, Forward Dash, Dive Kick, Airborne chop moves etc
Defense: Reversal, Backdash, Abillity to reset momentum, Anti Airs, Ultras that limit the opponent’s options, Teleports etc
Zoning: Pokes, Comboabe damage from pokes / “safe” followups, Projectile, Range, Mobillity, Walkspeed, Run Commands etc

various more and some flow into each other, but you know the drill. I think cody has good offense (with great ´great damage, a good forward dash but lacking mixup otpions), a crappy defense (no reliable reversal or too slow, horrendous backdash, hard to reset momentum, a great anti air game tho), and an average zoning game (with a mixed projectile, slow walkspeed and mobbility, and average pokes.

S-D tierlist system for each category:
A
D
B
If you’d ask me. (reseults exactly in a B overall, not that it matters anyway)

I simply love dem charts and analyses <3 and yeah I agree that he is somewhere in the upper end of the mid tier, which is a fine place for a character imo.

Cody’s placement is high mid tier according to my 100% accurate tier list.

S tier: Yun, Fei Long

Top: Yang, C.Viper, Akuma, Sagat, Ken, Makoto

High: Seth, Bison, Zangief, Balrog, Honda, Sakura, Adon, Rufus, Abel, Ibuki, Chun LI

Mid tier: Cody, Cammy, Ryu, Guy, Deejay, Dhalsim, Juri, Blanka, Vega,Guile, Gen, Rose

Low tier: Oni, T.hawk, Dudley, El Fuerte, E.ryu ,Dan, Gouken, Hakan

Are you basing that on current or 2012 stuff.

It’s for the current version of AE thus far.
