Cody Beginner's Guide

Why the lp CU?

is there any point to throwing out CU when not in a combo?

Cheese

Aside from chip finish? =D
Gosh that felt scrubby to say. haha.

another scrubby question for ya:

if my opponent blocks one of my combo’s, other than attempt a tick throw, how should I safely end the blocked combo (to best avoid punishment afterwards, yet still hopefully deal at least a little bit of chip damage to them).

if you don’t want to end with CU I’d stop before CU and backdash with a zonk punch preped. (in theory and not tested… might be too slow, gotta land first and then zonk punch.)
I think I read earlier that you can end with a LP CU and you might not get punished…

another question, is what is his fastest poke? How many frames on his cLP???

My fave pokes thus far are far st.mk and cr.lk. And though while technically not a poke, I abuse his cr.mk slide a lot.

i meant to ask about that too. What should I follow up with after connecting with slide? Aside from zonk

edit:

also, whats a good air normal to use when both players jump at the same time??? I am getting beat out by a ton of stuff right now whenever that situation arises.

What are Cody’s options on wake-up? I know EX Zonk has invincibility but the timing is weird. I usually end up throwing a regular Zonk or have nothing come out at all. EX CU and RK get stuffed badly.

He has no good wake-up options. Just block, or dash foward.

so cody has NOTHING that is safe on block, in a combo?

tried lp CU and ate cHK from virtually every shoto

lp CU is punishable probably by most sweeps. It’s -5 iirc, so it’s punishable just not by a lot of things. It pushes you away from the opponent so the only thing they can really punish with is sweep.

so what should i be doing to end combo’s that are being blocked, aside from attempting to crossover, or push them far enough back that a CU could be considered safe (if that is even possible)?

do the cammy approach?

at least cody has an overhead outside of j.attacks.

fadc.

Weird quesition here but since bingo punch kinda mkaes you “give up” a punch button for awhile, which one is everyone using. lp, mp, and hp seem prretty important so I have been mixing up/experimenting between mp and hp. This goes for EX as well. And for those who only charge it up when they think they are about to close it to use it, the longer bnigo charges, the farther it goes. Not sure if it is that important for you, but I am having a hard time getting the exact charge time down anyway.

Bolded combo doesn’t work against Akuma. Ruffian gets blocked.

The other one does though.

I have a hard time getting the timing right too, but I noticed it’s harder for me online than offline probably due to lag or dropped frames or something.

I use HP and MP+HP for EX because that is what feels natural to my hands and I feel you should always have LP for the jab / tech the throw. Of course this configuration means I can’t focus but I don’t EX Bingo that much (I probably should do it more). From reading the various threads it would appear that HP is the punch most people give up.

On a side note, Bingo is awesome, I’ve been using this move more and it’s great. It seems hard to punish if you hit at max range and it can totally help you get the edge in a fireball war.

Why do people think overheads are worth anything? the only good overhead in the entirety of Super SF4 is Dudley’s… having one is not worth shit… especially ones like Cody/Ryu/Ken/Sagat/Rufus that don’t beat OS tech and have eight years of startup time.

I was testing the LP Criminal last night… sometimes it seems that you won’t get all of the hits out of criminal, so it ends up being more unsafe than -5. got punished a few times for it. Since the ppl I was playing sucked, they only used sweep… Ken could do probably do c.mk xx EX tatsu, Ryu possibly could do the same.

I use all three punches for EX Bingo because I’m only going to use it in one or two specific situations and I want to make sure it works, with no chance of getting regular bingo. Its not a great move… definitely not awesome, not something you should pressure people with, and you can’t space it to make it safe. its -16 for chrissakes
if you are good you could hit confirm out of it… FADC back on block, FADC forwards to U2 on hit. that’s about the only great thing about it

I got some funny replays last night that I’ll try and upload next weekend. Just beating up on scrubs  some of these guys are such serious punching bags I felt guilty playing them
