Cody Beginner's Guide

Trying so hard to get good with Cody and not getting anywhere…

Got to trial 24 and can’t do it, and on top of that I always seem to miss combos.

Moar practice. Aside from that, anyone got any tips for a noob?

Every now and then i try to go into endless with only one or two moves or combos in mind, not caring about winning or losing but just about trying my best to hit that move/that combo without taking big risks.

@3)

actually, when i played yesterday online after quiiiiiiiiite some time (god, how i absoltely hate lag :razzy:), i met this guile and when he did a c.hk, i blocked the first hit and then used c.mk to stuff him before his second hit came out… dunno if thats becouse of lag  someone should try it out in practice or sth

edit: that nj.hp is a rather good idea actually :smokin:

careful, I used to do cr.mk for the second hit until I realized if you don’t space cr.mk properly you’re going to eat a flash kick while you recover

OH AND BY THE WAY I just reached top 100 ranked cody =)
I know the points don’t really matter and I’m still a scrub but YAY!!!

Doesn’t cr.hp~hp CU do more damage though? I assume your doing the lp links for hit confirm to minimize punishment?

I don’t think I will be attempting many 1 frame links as I play almost exclusively online and cannot do them reliably. This is the main reason I’m giving up rufus. Good thing Cody has so many options. After playing so much as Rufus Cody seems like slow motion - its fantastic.

stand close hp to crouch mp is a 2 frame link and it does do more damage

260 dmg for cr.hp xx hp cu

288 dmg for cl.hp, c.mp xx hp cu

cl.mp, c.hp xx hp cu is a 1 frame link and still does 288 i think

cl hp, cr mp xx hp cu seems more practical in a match at least in my opinion, but most likely because I haven’t practiced cl mp, cr hp xx hp cu that much yet.

Ok, wondering if using the Zonk knuckle should be a part of my gameplan.

I can never remember to charge it and rarely land it if I do.

zonk is a crucial tool in cody’s gameplay.

I have read through all of the cody beginner and combo threads, but am still having some zonk trouble. The range is so small that I feel like in order to actually punish fireballs with it you have to be very close and have quick reflexes. Most people tend not to throw fireballs at that range either.

Other than FADC, can you list 2-3 instances where you should be using zonk? thanks.

Speakng as a not-great online-only player, I’ve found that Zonk actually reaches further than it seems. Especially if the opponent is throwing out a high poke or something that extends his/her hitbox. Against Ryus who like to think that throwing out fireballs at mid-range is safe, I’ve been able to react to their Hadoken in online lag. It doesn’t LOOK like Cody’ll hit them at Zonk’s max range, but his fist juuuuust about reaches them. Use a shoulder button for Zonk when you’re standing if you’re a pad player, so you’re ready to do other stuff if they decide to jump in or something.

It’s also a good poke if spaced right, since it’ll push people too far away to punish. If you notice them throwing out a lot of high attacks to zone you, toss out more Zonks. If they do a lot of crouching attacks, you’ll want to not use it quite as much, since it’ll easily get stuffed.

Double post!

Yeah, if I can remember to get a zonk out, I try to keep the mp button charging, but it doesn’t flow naturally to me. I play pad so holding a button can really handy cap me.

Also I have a deadly addiction to starting combos with a j.mk. I get punished after they catch on to my tactics, but I can never seem to start combos without that kick. This really makes fighting characters like Ryu or Ken with a good DP really hard to beat.

its a general bad habit to attempt a block string with j.mk against shoto’s, but use that to your advantage. If the cross up gets blocked just block and tech to see if a srk comes out. What kind of “combos” are you referring to? Pretty much all of his links that can be comboed off of j.mk can be done with nj.hp, j.hp, j.hk, j.mp.

Try not to use mp as your zonk button because it has most of your important tools (f.mp, b.mp, cl.mp, cr.mp, s.mp, focus attack) if you’re in close use hp cuz you’re going to need that tech option, only time I use lp zonk is in combination with hp for the ex if I’m not up close (cl.mp/cr.mp to ex zonk, Focus attack to ex zonk)

But yeah generally pad is going to limit your zonk usage

Good stuff here.

Most of my combos usually go along the lines of j.mp, c.lp x2, c.lk, criminal upper or ruffian kick.

I should really start using some of his other tools. I never really use the forward mp or back mp moves. I usually go to the replay channel and watch higher ranked cody players fight and mimic what I see.

I WILL make the transfer over to stick once I have the money for a decent one. Then starts the long painstaking process of relearning EVERYTHING.

yeah once I switched to stick it opened an entire new game for cody.
Overall if you’re going to land a jumpin you’re going to want to maximize your damage as best as you can. Head to practice and just set the dummy on auto block. If it hits at least do cl.mp>cr.mp xx criminal, if it doesn’t find a comfortable block string and tick throw.

f.mp is by far one of the most important tools that you “must” use to be effective. I mean don’t abuse it, but you have to get used to doing it. Since cody doesn’t have much defense they gave him a bunch of beautiful ant airs based on certain distances and b.mp is your go to for close jump ins. I think it is by far the best anti air normal in the game.
