He uses Vega. Don’t you worry about telling him about bad wakeup options =P
backflip someone?
Ill have to try rushing… I have just been playing the walk back punish cody. I suppose doesnt work against retards
What is Cody’s “safe jump after back throw” NOT safe against? Is there a list somewhere?
i think it’s safe against everything. best reversal is 3 frames shoryuken. and you can block that.
you can safe jump shoryukens?!? how strict is it? I know for a fact you can safe jump against all 4 frame moves, but against 3f dpers I just bait and block the first ones to condition.
u can back throw => jump as soon as possible => land + block sryk.
however you can’t use j.hp /hk meanwhile or the srk will hit ya.
yeah that’s what i figured, that’s what I’ve been using as a srk bait.
What are you jumping in with? MK?
You jump in with nothing. The trick is this…
After a back throw if you know for a fact they don’t have a 3f srk, you hold UpForward and he’ll automatically jump to them upon recovery. Right as he’s about to land hit HK or MK. HK is better somewhat in my opinion it has more active frames. However if they do have a srk make sure to no press anything after the jump. Just land and block (be sure to tech throw though). If they don’t appear to be spamming srks, but blocking they were playing safe also. Meaning the next time you land a back throw hit late with HK to continue pressure.
Its a mind game once you have that 3f dps. Scare them from not using it, sure you’ll eventually get hit but just scare them.
Also to note after a back throw. You can time your crack kick right away to do a meaty. I believe it stuffs even 3f reversals. However don’t do it on those 0f command grabs (gief, hawk).
In my opinion back throw is cody’s most valuable thing to shoot for. It just sets you up in his sweet spot of pressure game. Once you land a backthrow the game is on you. make sure you don’t give it up.
Had my 1st real night of ranked matches w/ Cody, and here are my thoughts so far:
LOVE the T.Hawk matchup, was the 1st and really only matchup where I felt complete control zoning him out.
Felt a little douchey doing it but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Not sure really how to use U2 since 7 out of 10 times I use it, they’re jumping in on me. The dust hits, then the wrench hits whiff, and I eat massive punish >_<
I’m having Hell w/ the 3 main shotos - Ryu,Ken,and Sagat.
I can’t even get in on Sagat to do anything bc he hides beind a wall of tiger shots even tho I’m sliding, zonking, ex RK… the overgrown cyclops just runs all day.
Ryu… I don’t know if I’m just getting outclassed or what, but it just seems like he has more answers than I do, and the second he gets super I’m eating a random normal into super.
I have a stronger hatred for Ken than I had before (didn’t imagine that was possible). I block srk, go to punish, and eat another srk before his feet touch the ground. What is the ideal punish for this? He just mashes another shortcut srk and whatever I do is moot.
All in all I’m enjoying Cody’s playstyle, Ive just had a hellish road so far. First 3 fights were a 7k makoto, 7k Dudley, and a 9k Bison that taunted me half the match gotta love quick match picks
lol That U2 don’t use as an anti air. There are times you want to use it.
- It starts in 7 frames. Some characters sweeps take longer to recover (use it)
- a big move that was blocked that recovers longer than 7 frames (use it)
- if you wanna punish srks wait till they land then (use it)
- if you do a safe jump with hk or hp buffer the ultra motion and if they got stuffed or hit (use it)
- if you get a nice counter hit cr. hp ~ ex rocks (use it)
How are you approaching shotos? are you jumping a lot on them (don’t). Only time when you can jump at em is if you’re away from the srk range. Or off of a back throw immediately go into a safe jump (BUT) don’t do anything but land block and tech throw. If they mashed a srk punish accordingly. When you condition them not to you can occasionally throw out a hk, hp, or mk.
Ken’s lp srk recovers lightning fast. You only want to punish it if he does it point blank. If its well spaced another lp srk is going to come out. Just play patient.
Against shotos you really want to just scare them from using that srk. Block the first 2 or 3 and use a punish combo that’ll make them forget how to do a srk.
And also against sagat you gotta practice getting in rock range
duck his P fireballs and throw out your lp and mp rocks against his k fireballs
His Punch shots are 39 (no way in hell can you keep up with that) His Kick shots are 45 framers. Your lp and mp rocks are 44 and 46 respectively. MP when you have advantage and back to lp to start keeping up with the shots. Also get in distance to use mp rocks. Don’t jump at him because thats a free anti air for him all day. You gotta throw rocks smart against sagat and eventually fake one of those rocks into an ex ruffian.
I play defensively and try to punish where I can. I’m always trying to land a [H]RK on their jump ins, but my timing is 50-50. I’ll block say… Ken’s [m]srk and try to go for c.HPxx[H]CU or c.lp-c.lp-c.mp-[H]CU/[M]RK and eat a [L]srk midway. Maybe my links are still a little off, I dunno. If I block Ken’s [H]srk, what punish should I be going for? just a simple [H]CU seems like I’d be settling for less.
As far as sagat I can’t even get in range, my timing on zonk is bad half the time and i still get hit. And when I do gain ground I’m just playing into his game and I eat a tiger knee/uppercut, or god forbid I jumped, his spinning roundhouse into Ultra. I learned quick not to try to win a firefight with him.
I’m going to spend tonight practicing fadc to U1, so when I get that down things should look up.
(Maining Vega since vanilla this fadc into ultra stuff is new to me)
don’t worry I played vega back in vanilla and switched to cody on super.
My suggestion is to just practice fadc into ultra 1 but stick with ultra 2 in matchups. Don’t use it until you block something big (i.e. srk, ultras, etc) punishing fireballs is strict on spacing so I don’t recommend trying it yet. Just stick to learning his normals and links
Seperate your hit confirm combos with your punish combos. Get in the habbit of always hit confirming when you’re pressuring. c.lp c.lp c.mp is sometimes hard to connect at first thats why you’re getting srk mashed. To compensate for that just c.lp c.lp block the first few times against mashed reversals it conditions scrubs to stop doing it and plus its a free punish combo. Then you can start trying to connect that cr.mp.
cody has one of the easiest punish combos to do. Since you’ve played vega I’m sure your somewhat used to 1 frame combos. If you can practice the f.mp~cl.mp~cr.hp~hp CU that is his most damaging punish combo, but its 2 1 frame links. Or just practice doing cl.mp~cr.Hp~HP CU only 1 of those 1 frames. However if you’re missing it a lot and eating srks I’d suggest practicing Cl.HP~Cr.mp~HP CU/Ruffians get out of the habit of going straight into cr.hp~hp CU.
If you do an fadc punish don’t do cl.hp~cr.mp~hk ruffian. Do cl.hp~hk ruffian because of damage scaling.
Try not to play (defense/punish) with cody. They designed him more so on pressure and rushing. Don’t forget you have F.Mp, F.HP, and cr.mk (use it well spaced) also don’t forget to use his pokes.
It’ll be a while, but stick with him and you’ll get better.
When I first started using him all I could do was nj. HP~Cr. HP~Zonk and focus attack~ultra 1. At that time I could only beat other fellow scrubs. I’m just now learning how to pressure with cody.
Thanks for the tips.
I’m pretty sold that I can’t play online ranked anymore.
Decided to play an hour to wind down after work.
5 turtle Guiles and 8 “I-can-get-away-with-murder-cuz-I-have-SRK-lawlz” Kens later, my dual shock eats shit. (and the wall)
I dunno why, but this re-grind on psn has been hell on my nerves
If anyone on psn wants to play a few so I can learn Cody the right way, add me. I can use all the help I can get.
i’m getting ok with cody, been using him pretty exclusively since i got super. just one question: how do you guys use focus attacks in matches?
right now during the flow of a match, im never even considering them. i’ll fadc alot during combos, or through fireballs, or out of blocked criminal uppers, but im talking about actually using a focus attack to hit an opponent, is it ever practical?
there is no real situation where focus attack fits. it fits everytime and never. you dont want to get predictable with it, so throw it in every now and then. it can be great against jump ins (not empty jumps!) against characters that have no 2hit-jump in attack. [so be aware aginst chun and gen, to a lesser degree ryu, seth etc]. in zoning / poking game it can be great to punish a poke such as f.mk from ken or s.hp from chun, or s.hk from bison etc etc… again beaware, gen can punish you with mk xx hands. and dont get to cocky or they will just use an armor breaking move to teach you a lesson.
How do you do that bad spray on ps3? What is U+P ?
