Yeah the second 2D screenshot actually looks pretty good. Also in that trailer the giant fucking rock that obstructs vision is a really good idea. Nothing makes a video game better than interfering with the only human sense that allows us to play games. Sight.

We canceled the second version in 2d, it was very time consuming and costly, so we decided to do in 3D, which accelerated the development process. The fun of the game is the same or better as it allowed us things in 2d is not able to do.

Yes I can understand that 2D art that good would probably be unrealistic. Considering big time studios don’t even do sprite work anymore it would be unreasonable to expect that from you guys. Also I do appreciate the effort you guys are putting so if anything comes off harsh I don’t mean it to. I think criticism can be practical if you’re interested in feedback. In saying that I would like to offer more feedback that hoepfully can come off as constructive.
The alpha footage is obviously very early so I won’t judge the game based off it but it looks very rough. The renders for the characters look nice so hopefully the actual game can somewhat look similar in quality. The gameplay looks very buggy right now so it’s hard to tell how any of this will play. From the description you provided it sounds like this is perhaps a marvel-ish game with the chain system. I would really recommend making the game plah simple and perhaps more to something like SFV. It could be to the benefit of your team to focus on a solid simple system as opposed to a overly ambitious system that doesn’t work and is broken.
Sorry but the pre alpha looks terrible as far as using it to say to a bunch of fighting game players “hey guys, new fighting game”
The hit effects are bad, the hit detection looks bad. And the game doesn’t look crisp or responsive.
I really hope they can pull it together but as it looks now, it doesn’t cut the mustard.

He’s an Indy developer that’s already made a successful tournie game, on his first attempt so he knows his stuff with regards to programming/bugs/rollback netcode. If he’s down for it and you can spare the time and have a thick skin he would be the first person I’d hire to make a fighting game, and he might be willing to give you some “advice” about this game you are making.
can you make it a bit racial? Like make a black one who is the tallest in the game and an asian one who is the shortest?
And make a white one that’s sad for no reason and is wearing the Starbucks colors.
