Clicking PS2

Sup, when I put a game into my PS2 it’ll click a few times, then the game boots up. I’ve been reading online and usually people have disc read errors when this happens, but not me. Supposedly it has something to do with the laser guide arm or something, I’m not sure. Do you guys have a guide I could follow to fix the PS2, or know what’s causing the PS2 to click right before a game boots up? Also, when the game is up and running, it never clicks, only on start up.

Oh, forgot to say it’s a fat PS2.

I know this isn’t especially helpful but you may want to leave it alone if you aren’t getting read errors. I took my fatty PS2 apart that wasn’t reading blue backed CD games. I tweaked the drive like a guide outlined and it stopped reading both CDs and DVDs. No amount of fumbling could bring it back to life. I ended up replacing it with another fat PS2 and now use HDLoader instead.

Listen to this man! Fatty PS2s are a pain in the ass to fix, and really easy to screw up. If it still works, you might be able to sell it and get a new PS2.

Just leave it. Mine has been doing it for the past two years and still works perfectly.
And yeah, better not take it a part. I while ago I thought it would be a good idea to clean my fat one. After I put it back together it stopped working.
Had to tweak with the lens for a few hours until I got it working again.

I’m getting the disc read errors. So you’re saying I should leave it alone, and let someone who’s done this before fix it?

I’d get a quote for repair from Sony and compare it to what you would pay for a new slim system. I can get them for $80-100 used locally. The DVD drive is definitely the weak point.

Clearly. I know one of my friends got one replaced really cheap in Naptown.

I am fixing a old PS2 for a friend who has this problem. He is getting disk read errors also. Your problem sounds to me like it could be the laser gear. You may need to clean the laser gear or replace it. I would also recommend cleaning your system if it is very dusty.

As many have said dont do this until you get some real bad problems like disk read errors. If not leave it alone. When the time comes you can find a lot of info on this problem. I have even seen youtube tutorials for it.
