First off, lots of useful info all over this thing, so thanks for that.
Second, I’ve been playing SSF4 for a while, and while I am improving (read suck less than when i put the disc in the drive), there are some things I can’t seem to deal with in online matches. Most frustrating is being pushed into the corner and wailed upon.
I’m mainly playing as Rose, and for the life of me I can’t get out of the freakin’ corner. I’m hoping there’s some way I can get out without leaving myself open to a complete punish (like taking a focus attack after jumping over, crumpled, then thrown back into the corner… demoralizing moment for me), or if being in the corner is really anything to worry about (like maybe it’s just a psychological thing). Thanks in advance.
I guess first off, this might be a rose specific thread so perhaps asking in the Rose board would be most helpful. It’d also be helpful to know what character you’re playing against as some characters are much better to escape against.
Second, as far as I know, Rose sucks in the corner. I’m not even sure if she has a reliable escape option. I’ve heard of soul throw on wake-up, but what do I know about Rose? I will say that in a non-specific character discussion on how to get out of the corner, probably the best thing to do is be patient and block (I’d recommend crouch tech OS against throws). Some characters can put you in a 50-50 in the corner so that it’s really frustrating being there, but for the most part just blocking should suffice. If I play Bison and I scissor kick you, I get a LOT of chip damage, but at least I don’t get a full combo by reading your jump out right?
Once you have defended enough so that the opponent doesn’t know you’re trying to escape, you have a few options. Either jump out or mount an offense that’ll relieve the pressure off you and get you out of the corner (or throw them into the corner). Of course, the offensive route is much better as a LOT of characters can ultra somebody jumping out. That being said, at lower to mid levels, jumping out is much easier. Either way, do something unexpected. Oh, one more thing: isn’t Ultra 2 good on wake-up (instant defense?)?
And if you have that much trouble in the corner, try not to get into the corner in the first place. It’s hard, but it’s something to work on.
Soul throw can help IF you can read a long recovery move from them. I’ve gotten out of the corner a few times by whiffing soul throw over their head. 9/10 times though it only leaves you open. If you do use it, make sure to watch for the backthrow upon landing, they may be trying to throw you back in there.
EX soul spiral can eat some moves and knocks down which gives you time to get out. Even if you don’t use it intending to hit with it…you can wait for them to jump at you (if they do) and spiral underneath them to turn the tables.
Jumping is easiest but also very punishable. When I’m pressuring someone in the corner I almost always am waiting for that inevitable jump…
Yeah Ultra 2 is good for wake-ups, but Ultra 1 is more versatile (mainly because I don’t yet have the skill to utilize Ultra 2 in any decent combos). And it wasn’t specifically a Rose question as much as it was a “if I get into a corner period” because it seems like a basic thing I ought to know.
Unexpected… Most people at D-rank (where I sadly stay so far) don’t know enough about Rose or her Soul Spiral, which always results in a knock down if it lands. Yeah that could work… oh and thanks! (that was at Smoke btw.)
don’t move back when you want to create distance, push them instead. it will help keep you out of the corner in the first place.
key is not to panic, just wait for your moment and push your way out with a safe combo that pushes them away. that’s up to you to figure out, though. i think it’s a good place to burn meter if you manage to hitconfirm something, or you’re really confident in a whiff punish. like normal xx fb fadc normal xx drill or something, if rose can do that.
