Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

God damn you’re amazing!

Some Chun videos from the most recent tournaments.

vs SkiSonic (Fuerte)

<- lud scraping me up, kinda hard for me to watch rofl.

<- not a Chun match but just another game to watch vs Arturo.

I’m in the very early stages of developing a Chun game (finally moving away from Blanka, my true love), and I gotta say, I learned a ton from watching your matches. Thanks for the links. Any more are appreciated!

nice win against arturo’s seth

Yes nice wins, but I find it funny that you’re just posting vids of you using other characters besides chun-li in a “Chun-li Video” thread :V

Kinda hard to comment on teh first two matches since most everything you did worked out in your favor. As far as I can tell you got your Chun specifics down and you know the Boxer match-up well. Things I saw that are worth commenting on but not necessarily Chun specific:

 • Josh didn’t DP every chance he got, which made it look like it was the right choice to jump. Chun’s jump is so floaty that even if you predict a tiger shot you have to either hope it’s a standing one you can air-chain or jump preemptively. I personally, if I had any self control, wouldn’t jump in on Sagat even if I ‘knew’ a tiger shot was coming.
 • Hazan shu’s out of the blue vs Sagat were probably meant to go over Tiger Shots, but it’s pretty risky.
 • Nestor was pretty scary good. He showed that instant overhead thing isn’t safe from the step kick.
 • C.MK to go under the knee was really good, especially since I didn’t think Nestor was being predictable. However you got hit after, now I’m not sure why, but backdashing after the knee is blocked might work better since AFAIK is requires the Sagat player to consciously counter it. Also it gives you more time since you don’t have to react to standing Short, but to the tiger knee itself which in turn means you don’t get hit by tiger shots if that’s what he goes for instead.
 • Might have been in trouble against less methodical players. I know that’s a silly thing to say considering your competition, but that double dash after Kikkoken that ended round1 of match1 vs Nestor, that could have been an Ultra or an EX tiger Shot, either way, walking behind the kikkoken is safer than dashing.
 • A bit of personal preference, but might be worth not finishing your string with the fierce and opt for a dash>throw. Dash>throw in general would have countered some of that FA spam Nestor was doing. Since Chuns tend to poke a lot but don’t cancel into anything from mid-range, FA works well. Might want to be more careful with them sweeps and stuff.
 • I was surprised at how often you went for DF+HK, but not as surprised about how often it worked. You spaced that pseudo crossup very well.

yooo fellowship of the thigh man show me some love lol j/k.

PC mod next time~

very nice chun. i like how you use d/f +hk almost as much as i do, although your use of it is much better than mine, as you actually use its ambiguous properties… i do not.

the thing i noticed MOST about your play in these videos is your willingness to use EX SBK as an AA when your at neutral… Ie, not just as a reversal…

i think its that which separates you from most chuns that ive seen, as most of us love our meter.

yeah when i play online i do the same thing, and when i play against somuchdamages, or combojacks sagats i also do the same thing. i’ve found that sagat players love to jump at chun… there neutral game is generally> throw a fireball or jump forward…

i also really liked how you adjusted to nestors punishment of your instant overhead with his F+HK, by spacing your instant overhead further away the next time you did it when he was down… signs of an oldschool player that thinks and doesnt just mixup.

there were a ton of other small things that i really liked about your chun such as using roundhouse as a starter for your jumpin combos when they were stunned or it was guaranteed, and also the way you used your opponents aggression against rthem by waiting for them to jump at your charged ex sbk… you knew when to switch it up to defense VERY well… unfortunately for me atleast that makes it a bit suspect… shows a gap in player versus player ability or a lack of matchup knowledge/ opponent knowledge…

still, there was no mistaking the skill on yours and your opponents parts, good shit.

pretty much agree with this… nestor was goddamned good.

4:00-4:05 was some pretty insane defense from smoothcat, but it seems as if nestor didnt attempt to throw enough imho, maybe 'cats got some mad throw punish skills…

Dae: thanks dude, your chun is at a very high level.

ZenFire your right about the jumping i shouldnt be doing it to much, might be a weak point in my game. I try to do alot of safe jumps…on sagat its free after the throw:lovin:

Dime: lol yeah nestors no joke we go about even he just got the best of me that day. With chun i like to have super meter but its so hard to pass up on AA bird kick, vs sagat i use alot of meter but other characters like shotos i save for super.

thanks for the pointers guys.

Damn. How did I miss this post by SC? I thought I left a comment earlier this week.
Sup? My friend Robot Bit Me always speaks highly about you!

All those videos are a perfect testimony that you certainly know the matchups and how to effectively play Chun. I agree with all the points that were already expressed. I don’t think most Chunners would have been able to handle Nestor’s Sagat as well as you if put in the same circumstances (shit, it’s bad enough the character takes major damage just from normal attacks alone).

Against Sagat, I don’t personally like sitting on meter too much because usually there are opportunities to punish him with EX SBK. I"ll have to re-evaluate my tactics about holding onto my meter to use Super against Shotos.

Oh, ever thought about mixing up your aerial TC with EX SBK instead of always going for stomps?

<3 I thought that was you fighting the Rog at first. It definitely didn’t look like how I might have expected you to fight him, tho.

Good stuff rocking the Fuerte and you did fine against Sabin. I’m confused why you used Abel isntead of Chun against Dhalsim, tho.

The manz came through with the rest of the GF from C3 teams!!

vs Lud(Chun) + Eric Kim (Sagat)

After reviewing that…Lud is serious yo…hard to believe he hasn’t played SF before this one.

More to come, I think I lost to Eric Kim one set and I have more matches against HAV’s Abel.

yo good shit magman, you need a nasty chun to take out ekim and LUD

But the stomp is worth 100 points of awesome!

4:00 - 4:09 so sick

awesome shit MM!

you copied luds movement and applied it to your game… NICE! pretty much the same way nuki did versus nemo, only the style of movement is different.

you seemed to also have learned to throw out 3-4 pokes in a row without trying to move… just like lud does.

GREAT, adjustments mag! you both seem to be using more st.fp as well but it doesnt seem as if you’ve learned its timing yet during footsies… (you guys were using it with a combo of cr.hk = bad cause your conditioning the opponent to crouch which you of course dont want when your throwing out st.fp.)

the thing is to use it as a ranged counter not as a neutral poke starter… correct me if i am wrong.

i loved this last set of vids you put up… MAN yall niggas is getting SO GOOD!

you’ve eclipsed my play like 4 times over.

GO CHUN MIRRORS!

Thanks a bunch fellas, I feel at home.

Man, I got pretty lucky against Lud I’ll admit that. I’ll definitely step up my footsies and play more respectful and lower my jump attempts.

Next tournament is 2 on 2, I’m not sure what my partner is gonna go with…but if protomanST comes by again we’ll have videos again.

I’m still hungry since I’ve been losing, but I’m definitely closer to changing that. I gotta sharpen every area of my game to take one from these guys.

YO

Safe jump all day! Haha good shit Mag. Chun mirror was damn close.

@ 5:40 vs HAV’s Abel

Note that he’s playing on a Japanese stick and he’s regularly a happ stick user. So, unfortunately he misses a thing or two. It’s still a terrible match up for Abel, imo hands down the best match for Chun.
