Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

Local top guy here trying out Chun. Good that he does jab jab fierce Super and other things… but I really think he could do better. I feel he got away with so much. Should I contact him?

^Also, to aspiring casters/commentators, never do what this guy did at 8:00. Gross

Hey, I’m not exactly new here but I doubt I would be remembered after all this time. I used to post on SRK back during Vanilla as Thunder_Socks, when MagnetoManiac and Azrael still posted regularly here. Anyway, I’m not sure if it’s appropriate to post my Chun-Li play here, but I didn’t see a “critique my play” thread for non-pro players. If this is the wrong place, then hopefully a mod will fix it for me later and tell me about it so I know in future.

I play on PS3, EU side. Dat 50 hp buff for Chun-Li, am I Right?

Anyway, enough waffle. Take a look if ya want. But, if you think I’m a scrub don’t b scared to cuss me out. I’m used to it. I’ve been to this website before.

Edit: Hey, 4neqs, I thought I would take a look at your last video as a courtesy for your critiquing mine too. Is Ex-SBK good for divekicks now? I heard it got changed somehow, but I figured the 12 to 6 angle of a dive-kick would still beat it, but you beat akuma’s in that last video, and lately I’ve flat out beat a dive-kick similarly. Maybe I’m imagining things. Anyway, you’re Chun is solid as shit. If shit were solid, which… if it is… you should be more regular. I’m still sketchy on piano’ing cl.st.hk->hk.legs->cr.lp->st.fp consistently, so it’s real impressive seeing those cr.fp->ll punishes.

Double Edit: Ah, no… he goes to town on you later with dive-kick punishment on ex-sbk. Ignore me.

I’ll give it a look later. I’ll just edit my post here with my thoughts once I’ve done so.

Thank you for watching my vids. My PS3 is under repair, so I only get to play at a friend’s during weekends. I should really be better than this by now. :shake:

EX SBK can stuff divekicks a little better now in Ultra. It’s still kind of timing and spacing dependent though. It’s more reliable to check it with stuff like jabs if you’re not knocked down.

I only saw the Dhalsim and Vega ones of your Endless so far, but I’m still watching.

Edit–

Dhalsim - don’t be afraid to go in; you have a good focus attack, so time those well and be aware of what he can do to break your FA’s. It’s in your favor if you stick close to him. The times when he did random U1, you could have reaction U1 or dash U1 to beat him. Well placed lights/jabs can beat out his stretch hp moves, and close s. hk knee is for beating his teleports.

Vega/Guile - nothing too wrong. I guess what I can say for these matches (and your whole vid in general) is don’t double dip EX leg too often unless it kills or comes close to kill. It’s a waste of meter otherwise. @Malvadisco told me about that last year; it’s also a habit of mine that I haven’t completely shaked off. Another one is not to do mp kikoken all the time. It’s good, but it can make you predictable. hp version is good for closer distances, and sometimes you can mix lp and mp versions from afar. (As with EX leg, it’s also a habit of mine that I have to change, and since I noticed it with you too, I might as well mention it.) Also try not to backdash or walk towards the corner too early.

Good patience with the Vega match actually; it’s one where I haven’t had much experience with since the best Claw here often benches him in favor of his main (Boxer).

Oh yeah. Try and punish Guile’s sweep, it’s very heavy recovery-wise. You can Super or U1 punish it like you would a shoto sweep.

Yun - I’ll be honest: the Yun was ass. If it were a better one you’d be in real trouble. It’s one of the hardest matchups you’ll ever go through in USF4 as Chun. Almost zero margin for error.
EX shoulder goes through fireballs, so at certain points you won’t be able to fireball zone him at all.
There will be a time where you can go in on him… sometimes they don’t expect that. You have to really be on point to beat a good Yun.

Decapre I’m not 100% familiar with, but I think you should have been more aggressive and pressed her to the corner. Her reversal options can be beaten; they’re (at least) not as good as Cammy’s.

Might add more thoughts after a re-watch. Hope these helped.

Yeah, the opponents I play are a bit of a mixed bag. I think I’ve only every come across moderate-high skill Yun players before. I try to play the match up as though he’s similar to Rufus; although, honestly, I hadn’t figured just how good his shoulder barge was for moving through kikokken. Gonna have to watch for that in future!

I’ve tried mixing up Decapre on wake-up a few times but, is it just me, or is her hurt-box way smaller than Cammy? I can’t get any cross-up to put her in block-stun, as you would usually space it.

Thanks for the reminder not to back off so much. I think I give myself all sorts of trouble against the better players I’ve come across… This Chun-Li mirror I played recently against the nr.24 in Europe, for instance. I got corner raped so hard because he just happily walked me there and then did whatever the fuck he felt like.

Hey, thanks for the cl.st.hk tip on dhalsim! That would beat both throw crouch-tech and teleport, right? Sounds sweet! Really useful advice dude, you gave me a lot to think about. Thanks!

decapre is in fact smaller than cammy

Yes, afaik knee does blow up those. Jab and close s. mp (slaps) can beat Dhalsim teleport too, but you do want to do more damage when the opportunity presents itself

Bstoic finally has some ultra up. One of my favorite uploaders if only for the commentary and the fact that he replies to questions and comments. Feel free to critique/post via Youtube comments. He likes watching other Chuns’ vids and helping, too.

Gold Chun-Li is a thing. I always like seeing it, even though it’s a colour I’d never pick. Damn, if Juri isn’t the most infuriating match-up in the game though, besides ibuki.

I like the Juri matchup. Whiff punish those FB storages and stay active.

She forces a style of play on me, which is something I always dislike. I’d rather be able to play my zoning game, but she zones better against Chun-Li and any predictability with fire-balls gets you dive-kicked to the face. I’m probably just complaining about all the things which don’t automatically go in my favour, like the fact that she’s small and quick, making her hard to get a hold on. Her Ultra is like Rose’s Ultra II, also. Everything gets turned into a mad-scramble whilst they become temporarily god-like. I’m a huge proponent of predictability. I think of MagnetoManiac going on and on about how he doesn’t like rushing down with Chun-Li. Always made sense to me. With fundamentals you don’t take risks. You win carefully.

Just so I’m not de-railing the thread too badly, here’s another video I made. Same mix-bag of players.

^ I’ve seen BrolyLegs use that target combo okizeme before, and it never fails to impress. Good shit, stealing that first round. That Poison player looked mean. /takes_notes

Hey, thanks for uploading that match, Skatan! I have fierce problems when it comes to T.Hawk. He gave me fits in AE2012, and now they gave him a gun. I saw you do ex.hazan shu at the end of round 1, was that because a reversal normal hasan shu would have left you in a vulnerable position against a grappler? The combined damage and knock-down gives you space to breath and you don’t fall prey to reversal SPDs like that. Good thinking! I’m surprised he let you block a condor dive at the end there, with your ultra stocked.

Edit: I realized another thing. Ex.hasan_shu in that situation punishes back-dash cancel. Damn, why do I never use this move?

I set the filter for More Skilled, this time, to weed out some of the less competent players. Any thoughts are welcome!
I also commentate through-out the video, so if you just want to watch the entire thing without skipping directly to the matches, I promise you won’t be too bored. You get to hear me get salty when things don’t go my way. I don’t fight anybody below rank 170 bp with their character… and at the end I come up against the beastliest Zangief I’ve ever met.

Nuki with that Vanilla technology lol

Spidey, I’ll be watching your vids again, probably after Evo because there’s so much to watch lol

I subbed to you btw. My YT username is photonshermie. Feel free to message me here or on YT if you need anything :woot:

Great to see you are still around Skatan, personally I just played Ultra for the first time yesterday and tested all my girls new tricks.
Anyways, safe to say Ultra is amazing and I’m done sleeping… was a quiet two years for my Chun. But this game is too hype not to return too… I’ll contribute more to the fellowship again ASAP!
And I look forward to learning more from you all again soon too hehe, just like old times :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers guys much love from this half of the world, and I wish everyone a happy and successful Evo weekend! May the sidebet gods be with ya’ll!!! heh.
Big shout outs to Lud and David too for doing so great in the SFIV bracket yesterday as true Chun mainers… I’m not going to lie though I’ll cry myself to sleep knowing OhNuki didn’t make top8 this year ;[ Oh well, at least he’s back! Super hype for that, and lets get a real Chun into the top 16 for Evo2K15! ^^

nuki is playing vanilla tho

Nuki cares more about ST (he got 2nd btw), he was just vanilla-ing/autopiloting SF4 tbh despite what he said.

Dudes said he got bopped by Kazunoko so bad offstream lol
