Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

I didn’t watch this at first since I assumed that it was just pikagoma beasting on some random Chun but it’s actually some godlike poking by the Chun-Li player.

This one is months old and at ye olde arcade, but still a little representative of how I struggle with the Blanka matchup.
In AE, does he still have the wacky hitboxes that make c. lk to legs miss? I know I have to wait a bit to punish balls with U1, but I often forget that I have to do c. mk to EX legs to get full hits off him.

XBL Random Sessions: “Get Back in Shape” (my Chun put on a few exra pounds)
C&C always welcome

Hey guys its been awhile and I really haven’t played in over a month, but over the past few days I’ve been trying to get back into some form. My abscense has certainly hurt my Anti-Air and general reactions. Its either a bit of lag or reactions; but my moves are seeming to beat out a lot when I throw them.

Versus Makoto player: Did a first to five with this guy – I lost the set and this was my best my match. Lag was certainly apparent but no excuses. I should have not missed my HSU into Super. Dude did kinda make me mad by attacking me during lag spikes though.

Versus Bison player: Another first to five, This is the only match I won and honestly I’ve never faced a Bison that was constantly in my face like this guy was.

Versus Yun player: Just something to make feel better about myself. Certanily did a lot nice things here.

I watched all Haneyama and Mike Ross matches from the Twitch archive. It was so sad to see Haneyama lose to Bonchan simply because he refused to block after doing the spinning bird kick…

I was baffled as to why he did the SBK at all. The only thing that will combo after MK SBK is super - with 3 bars there was no reason for Sagat not to throw out DP FADC at the very least. Bonchan throwing out ultra was pretty much him saying “yeah…I know you’re not gonna be blocking, so eat this.” I sometimes do the HK/MK LL loop, and then follow up with nothing and just block in the hopes of baiting out something but in that case it makes more sense I think because there are things that actually combo after the loop.

Even after that he still could have won - just back Sagat into the corner and then sit on DB at a distance where reaction U1 blows through any fireball.

Hane’s been playing too much Yang.

maybe he was crouch teching because most people go for a throw after getting hit by a MK.SBK or he just didn’t expect an ultra…

if the opponent has any sort of meter i usually just block/backdash after a MK.SBK & if they don’t have meter you can get them with an EX SBK after MK.SBK if they try to do a move or throw…

I can never see the point in ever using mk.SBK… Chun has way better options from cr.fierce. I find it pretty surprising that Chun’s still use this move at all (regardless of opponents meter or Chun’s slight frame advantage) I just can’t see any reason to use it over legs into loop or sweep (without meter)

Unless you do a Jump Back HK after an SBK or the chance the SBK will finish the opponent off for the round there really is no reason to do it.
Off of Cr. HP I’d rather HSU (tack on super if you have it) or cancel into Lightning Legs – personally.

i dont find it weird at all, but hane should block that, thas all

I actually never really liked the MK SBK combo even before the HK/MK Legs loop was found. Especially against shotos or anyone with a good reversal. With HK/MK Legs you can follow up with a sweep that’s a 1-frame link. Everyone knows that, so some players will throw a reversal or ultra there. If you hit the link, fine whatever, but if you miss then Chun gets punished. This is something I noticed happening often so sometimes I will intentionally follow up with nothing to try and bait out the missed reversal.

With MK SBK, nothing except super combos. You have slight frame advantage but Chun will lose to anything that hits hard with good startup invincibility. Hane using it there basically just gave Bonchan a 50/50 of will Chun push a button or won’t he. With 3 bars of meter, Sagat had every reason to throw DP FADC - if it hits Sagat gets damage and if it doesn’t then Sagat is safe, and can possibly set up another 50/50 (throw or a hail mary DP).

Bonchan was actually pretty smart in choosing to do ultra there. If he was wrong and Hane didn’t push any buttons, he was going to lose the round, but he was down by quite a lot anyway and had already won the first round - so he could just sacrifice that round and start the next with 3 bars, which is a pretty good position for Sagat. If he was right, he gets max damage ultra and he gets to keep the 3 bars which would be really useful in finishing the rest of the comeback. It was a 50/50 but the consequences for guessing wrong weren’t that bad (lose the round, start the next with 3 bars) so Bonchan had every reason to do it.

It’s easy to sit here and think about this after having watched a video and given time to analyize what happened and all, but being able to think about your opponent’s options while in the match and analyizing their best course of action and then taking steps to counter that is an important part of the game. It’s something I’ve been trying to integrate into my game.

agreed his best option was to block with sagat with 3 bars and a full ultra the worst thing he could of received was a throw…

anyway it was nice to see Haneyama using chun again I wish he could of beaten Neurosis so we could of seen a Haneyama v.s Mike Ross match…

IMO his best option was to originally use a punish that didn’t leave him in a 50/50 guessing game when his opponent had so little life, he placed himself in a situation to lose the round. Regardless of what the best option was post SBK the issue I had is that he chose the wrong option initially, Sagat was low on life and near the corner, he made a poor punish choice and that is what cost him the round…

lol, I wish you guys dissected my gameplay like this – may actually help me improve and understand somethings.

Oh mate :frowning:

If you want I’ll give you full feedback in a PM on your fights, if I can help

no problem next time you fight against bon chan let us know  /jk

havent see any of your vids tbh, and im not the most amazing chun player either so yeah (and im really tired of this game, too much stupid bs)

haha no worries dudes,
of course C&C is always appreciated on my vids and Wii has certainly been helpful. BUT for Malva – I’ve got 3 vids just a few posts above
not my best play but not bad after a month hiatus – trying to get myself interested again for the 2012 patch. SF X T was my next big thing but with every new tid bit of info coming out my hype slowly fades.

To be honest, I was hoping for feedback on my matches too, but no-one ever replies unless it’s the Japanese or the bigwigs on display. It’s been very frustrating.

@Rayartz I can post comments on your youtube vids/account as usual, once I go about watching your vids if that’s okay.

i wasnt aware of that my bad, ill try to comment on your vids next time, but for the record like i said im very biased about tactical/strategical lines with chun nowadays (specially since i havent posted vids of my chun play, i find it kind of unfair that i say anything about other chuns while no one has seen me play), itoh i havent been performing the way i supposed to in tournaments and i have been playing a lot more umvc3… so yeah ill try to do my best.

Same here, but this is part of why I love this place; I learned (well, not learned, more like realized) that MK SBK is a poor option unless A) It’s gonna kill your opponent B) you’re REALLY CONFIDENT of the Super link or C) you’re the king of mind games and you know exactly what your opponent is going to do. Thanks, SRK!
