Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

The Akuma player really liked to start most rounds with far s.HK

Hey Sabin, yeah man your 'sim is beyond me and a real challenge to play. I always remembered you as a great player to watch even back in the B4 days.

Thanks a lot for he slide tip. I know not to do that now. Whenever you want more practice against Chun, please hit me up. I’m always down for long labbing sessions.

I’ll see you at EVO and cheer you on when I go 0-2.

whats his gamertag i havent played dude in ages man, he is pretty sick and has won a few tourneys at FFA

Guys, this is such a great thread. Thanks to all of you for the videos. I never realised Chun can be so versatile, it seems she has several answers to different problems that characters create for her.

I actually had several online matches today. Majority of people online are pretty crap and usually have no problem with spamming dragon punch all day long so it’s unfortunate I had to get used to that. But today I found out about clk, clk, ex kicks, ultra.

I was so stoked I went straight to training and tried it out. After about 1/2 hour I got themotion down pretty well and could do it consistently.

So I went back to online to try it out and it failed like 5 of 6 times. I lost more times after learning that skill than I did before knowing it.

I was so fukin pissed, it just seemed to me like crap people can win with crap tactics in this game so easily I wanted to punch a fukin wall, or sell the game.

But with all this stuff (I just read frompage 1 to 10 so far)I know I haveso much more to learn and I want to learn it (I really want to learn focus dash ultra for all those god damn fireball spammers!!!)

I will put a few vids ofmy crap chun on my youtube page in a few days and I hope you’ll try and contribute with criticism to make me better.

Watching all these amazing chuns like the japanese players and also magneto here gave me new hope . . .

Ok, as promised here are two of my online matches from earlier on.

I’m not proud to put these online but I really want to improve and I think my problem is trying to learn to run first and walk later.

vs sagat

vs ken

Please break me down and offer whatever advice you can

Thanks loads

The Sagat match was deft, man, I dunno what’s not to be proud of!

edit: vvv lol shows what I know

Essorance, the way you were talking I was expecting some pretty huge mistakes in your video, but your Chun isn’t bad at all.

Against Sagat I had a few concerns. Firstly you started the match with a kikoken, before you could see what he’s going to do. The spacing at round start is perfect for jumping in on fireballs, a better player may have combo’d you for that. Half the battle against Sagat is crossing the screen and getting into your range. So, do that right from the beginning, move forward a little, and go to block and see what he’s going to do. Second round was better, it’s harder for him to punish neutral jump.rh from that distance.

Your hyakuretsu kyaku are a little untidy, I saw a few times where they didn’t combo, either ex didnt come out, or ex came out too late… just keep practising that until you can’t help but combo it, online or offline. Lag can screw up legs bigtime I find, so, try and stick to 3bars+ games.

The Ken was clearly a better player. If you are unsure about blocking cross-ups, then focus absorb->backdash can take off the pressure and help get you back to neutral. You spent quite a bit of time in the second round where the spacing favoured Ken’s crossup game, and he could just keep going for crossups. You did a good job blocking the majority of the damage, but even if he hadn’t of fallen through your ex.sbk (bad luck there btw) his crossup would probably have stuffed it with the spacing; so having more options to deal with crossups, like backdash, would be a good idea. Doubly bad luck for missing the ultra juggle at the end, I’ve been on the receiving end of that a few times myself. Sometimes the other guy gets up in time to eat the launcher kick and doesn’t block it ^^.

yeah man essorance that chun was good! very good application of basic chun fundamentals, decent zoning ability… etc etc.

i would break down the matches more than what i’m about to… but i’m a bit lazy…

anywho…

you should use more d/f +hk against waking opponents… it’s good that you dont spam it, but knowing when to use it can give you GREAT damage opportunities.

also i saw you getting just a lil predictable versus that sagat player with the walk up block on wakeup… i do this also… better idea is to stay just a little outside of his (and your) throw range then mixup cr.lk x 2 or block or hasan shu. if your unsure of what to use then just allow him to wakup with no pressure… if your ever so slightly unsure but not enough to warrant totally backing off, just d/f +hk… its what i do when slightly confused.

Don’t worry about pride. You gotta post your losses for review in order to learn from others. We are all here to learn. My notes on the Ken match:

You need to AA him more. He was jumping for free it seemed. Standing forward and c. strong do the trick. Also need to poke him more from your range to throw him off his game and make him play in your game (s. fierce, s. strong, c. strong). You were blocking his offense and he was making you play his game. Never good for a weak Chun bar. Also I agree for the cross blocking, try to FA backdash to get out of that crap. Easier said than done, I know. One more thing…did you throw at all in that match with your block strings? You gotta get the throws in there during the block strings to keep him on edge from just holding down back. That’s all I got…

EDIT: Big thing I just noticed: You weren’t throwing during your block strings because you weren’t doing any block strings to begin with. I think that is because you are playing at the wrong distance from your opponent. You are in no man’s land. You are too far from your long attacks reaching and too close for your FB game to be effective. You should be playing 2-3 body lengths from your opponent (out of his sweep range and in where your s. strongs, and s. fierces, f. hasan shus are hitting). Control this area. If you do, you should be beating out his pokes and anticipating his jump ins with s. forward or c. strong, c. short, EX Legs combo. This is why you couldn’t pressure him and why you ended up blocking and eating crosses all match.

great advice goofyhand! perfectly agree

after seeing your advice i re-watched the ken vid with a more careful eye and noticed besides you being correct was that the reason that esso was scared of the ken player was 'cause of the kens use of F+MK…

so essorance this is how you deal with kens F+MK:

1.FA it and destroy him

 1. jump straight up and own the wiff on your way down.

 2. cr.HK it on anticipation

4.block it then do reversal hasan shu over the proceeding cr.MK that all kens abuse after making contact with F+MK.

jab sonic boom is gdlk.

gdlk edit: GREEN BARS! IT EXISTS!!! GREEEEN BAAARS!!!

Jab sonicboom has gdlk recovery. You can charge during ultra freeze. GG to random Ryu ultra.

Hmmmm. Jab sonicboom have that fast recovery??? This same situation happened before in 3rd strike when I was using ken. This should be tested with all fireball characters. I’m assuming fireball into super works the same with ultra, but I could be wrong

What? In SFIV, you can charge anything during an ultra freeze. This isn’t doing fireball into super/ultra. Guile’s fireball was already off the screen when Ryu did his ultra and Guile charged his ultra and launched it right after Ryu’s.

Gahhh I was blind. Yeah, just remembered it was on top of ryu already and guile did ultra during the freeze. Ignore my post

Yea that Guile stuff is ok but did you see that nasty Ken combo at 1:09?

Pretty sweetn:nunchuck:

Wow. Most impressive Ken combo I’ve ever seen.

Edit: Watching the rest of the video, I’m even more impressed. The Akuma next match is relentless, jesus.

Guys thanks for all your comments. They all helped me out and took me from 2k bp to 2.5k today, but bp doesn’t matter. What matters is I learned a lot, unfortunately didn’t record any matches.

Sorry to be a noob, what does standing forward and c. strong mean?

Also about your edit advice, I was so confused what you meant until I watched some of the japanese videos. Wow, I had no idea Chun can be such a monster at that range, I guess I played like 3S and always trying to be in really close for poking.

I still have so much to learn but all the advice helped a great deal. Thanks and I’ll try and put some of my slightly-improved-chun vids online later on lol

You guys woulda been proud of me, I did my first hazan shu over fireball, more than once today :crybaby: was so happy when it hit, such a great tool in her arsenal. No idea about that move with fireball happy players til I saw this forum

Thanks again . . . these japanese players are just too far ahead, almost makes me think where do I even start to begin to get that good?
