Chun-li Video/Discussion Thread

wow nice thx

Ok, all my fights from last night are finally uploaded.

Instead of linking each one singularly, there is the home page. Looking for some feedback. I feel like Im paying just a basic Chun and any input would be nice. Decent quailty matches, just make sure its in HQ.

nice matches ClxJames

Just gonna say what I noticed right off the bat here.

vs. Rufus: Can’t help you much here cuz I haven’t fought any good Rufus players yet. Hopefully someone else can enlighten you on this matchup.

vs. Ken/Ryu: You’re absorbing waaay too many fireballs at a time. Chun doesn’t have much HP to begin with so doing this is really dangerous. Absorb 1 or 2 then dodge the rest until you’re HP is recovered before you absorb more. You’re also letting them get away with a lot of his jump ins. Most shoto jump ins can be stuffed with cr.MP/cr.MK and you can use cr.MK as a crossup dodge of sorts. There are other good AA’s too, but I don’t feel like listing them here. It’d be easier if you consulted the Chun Li AA Thread for that.

vs. Guile: Punish that sweep with LK/MK Hazan Shu. After blocking the first hit you can tag him for free with that. FA absorbing the 2nd hit works too.

A sidenote, don’t use the b.MK target combo unless you know it’s going to hit. That thing’s not that useful, imo. Some of the situations where you’re using that there were better options like starting mixups/st.MP pressure/etc.

I must say though, you’re reactions for punishing with ultra are much better than mine. Props to you on that. The comments some people made on the Rufus video were annoying and stupid. Don’t let them get to you.

McRomes gave me this, features 3 matches of Nuki which is plenty enough for 1 video.

Anyways, this is simply AMAZING.

If you do some critical thinking, you’ll find some extremely high level gameplay and reasoning behind moves.

 • Nuki air throws gief, because his jump attacks are pretty slow, and gives him room from the corner

 • Nuki tries to hit gief out of EX green hand, with hasan-shu!!! Gief’s whiffed EX green hand animation is way faster, so it goes over, makes him whiff, and hits him!!!

 • SPECULATION … Nuki attempts multiple low short meaties, but gets countered by back dash both times. It’s quite possible that it ducks under the lariat and may combo, and will hit the starting frames of an SPD when timed right.

 • Nuki anti airs shotos and Sagat with st.forward. It counters Ken’s aerial tatsu, which gives Chun major problems otherwise.

Wow, good shit in that video

damn, you’d never catch me crowding Zangief that much just to land a throw. that shit’s ballsy.

Oh wow that video is great. Thanks for posting it.

Haha I feel bad for that Ken, he was being SOOOOO careful against Gief but in the end … dead.

First thing that jumps out at me is you barely ever dash (Second thing really, English voice over Chun-Li, Arghh!). Chun-Li has some of the fastest dashes in the game and she needs them, her mobility is part of the reason they gave her low vitality. Check this video, to see what I mean. Near the start of the video you land a long range sweep whilst you are cornered. You don’t have much time to get in range to pressure him… without dashing to him first, you made yourself an easy target for ex.messiah kick. If you had dashed, he’d have to wonder a bit more what you were going to try and do. Chances are that ex.messiah kick would’ve still been his choice, but you would have had time to go for a forward stomp, which is a better risk reward than the long walkup to throw. Other options are dash up and block, see what he’s going to do; or if you caught MagnetoManiac’s video on using cr.mp to duck under messiah kick, maybe even thats an option; df.rh is nice against Rufus’ wakeup too.

Another reason I think dashes will help your game is that you lose alot of life to meaty’s in some of the videos. Backdash has enough invincibility to cover you for all but the longest range meatys. You shouldn’t rely on it for every wakeup, but it helps quite alot.

One more thing, you seem to lose patience when your opponent is inactive. If he doesn’t have the lifelead it’s in his interest to do something. You can also throw more kikokens to get some sort of reaction from him (Matchup specific, for ex. Abel will take you to town for untidy kikokens). But, also, don’t be afraid to mix up ranges with them on the ground and work your footsies; especially against the guys in your videos that don’t seem aware of the focus attack.

GensouGoroshi is right about your ultra’s; I feel like everyone that posts videos here has a more intimidating ultra game than I do. I’ve never punished a flashkick with ultra -.-, Also throwing out ultra straight after metsu hadouken startup… when stood right next to Ryu, thats just crazy. I’m all boring and block Ryu’s ultra first :(.

Tokidokinukinkusu = Nuki?

Chun’s dashes are good, yes. But as with all things, you must be extremely careful with them. Remember that dashes themselves are very vulnerable.

Case 1 - Early on in my Chun career, I used to throw kikouken mid-range and then dash after it. I was getting killed for that though - Kikouken already has a lot of recovery, and then tacking on a dash afterwards…it was too easy for opponents to jump over the kikouken and kick Chun in the face as she was dashing.

Also, yes, the backdash is great escape, but as always, in moderation.

Case 2 - Yesterday I was playing against a good Zangief player. If I got knocked down and he came in close, I’d backdash away to safety. He adjusted to this though, so after a knockdown, he stood next to me, I backdashed, he forward dashed, and then SPD’d me. I’ve also had Honda/Blanka/Bison players anticipate the backdash and foil it with EX Headbutt/EX Ball/Scissors kick.

So yeah, good tool, but don’t over-abuse it.

Yes. Good matches btw, thanks for the link MagnetoManiac, great all round zoning display.

Azrael makes some good points about the downsides to dashing. Dashing after kikoukens sets you up for all sorts of nonsense, even if they badly time a punish for your kikouken, you’re giving them it for free by adding dashes behind it. Thanks for the input, I should’ve added more proviso’s to my own post.

I agree with you 100%, and I understand you completely. But Chun players should not be throwing kikokens in jumping range anyway, so yeah, dashing up after it would make it tons worse than the bad idea it was in the first place.

Though, I do like do dash after it if they are full screen and I throw one and try to get close with it. Just once though, so it would be dash -> start walking. Her walk is almost like a dash anyway, so it all pans out :wgrin:

OH SHIT. So I had an idea to search NSB5 videos, since I just remembered it happened, and look who we have here! Our hero Kuronuko doing some hot Chun stuff as usual.

You know what I’m really happy about though, is that before I found this video, I posted just about everything he did in the Chun vs Sim match. So glad that I’m coming up with these things that I’m seeing in the videos. Sorry if it sounds like I’m pumping my own penis guys.

edit: Holy hell, this guy plays like a true champion, Azrael plz mail me an autograph from him!!

edit2: WTF!!! Chun’s trip guard anti air low strong, combos into st.jab st.fierce!!! This guy is teaching me way too much.

lol sim gets so raped in this matchup once chun gets in… chun should have lost tho… sim gave her a get out of jail card with the missed combo…

i’ve only seen combofiend drop that combo once in all the times ive seen him play and he usually gets off one per match…

That second round was pure murder, I only saw Tateyama make one bad guess defensively, and thats all she wrote. Dime’s right on round 3 though, I don’t even think Kuronuko was expecting it with the punishment he whiffed afterwards. Chun-Li looks so haughty when she loses by time over, I love that attitude **.

In the Sagat match there’s that reversal hasan shu against throw setup again, I’ve been buffering dashes against throw setups recently; All that gives you is a sweep, or a high/low hasan shu mixup… So, I should really work on that hasan shu. Also, lol at Sagat’s wakeup hitbox pushing Chun-Li out too far for the forward stomp… bit late with the timing, but thats still crazy -.-. I liked him saving his ultra in round 2 till it could kill Sagat too, shame it didn’t work out, but that round would have gone alot differently against an ultra-less Chun-Li.

Yeah I stated on youtube that Nuki held his ultra so he could use it later in the match, instead of using it in the combo for next to nothing damage (fuckin Sagat). But I guess, there’s no point in explaining to youtube scrubs so, never that again lol. I do like this technique and will hold off on my ultra combos for better situations more often now. Nuki absorbs 2 tiger shots, even in more recent matches, while Kuronuko plays more safe. Interesting difference. But I don’t think Sagat can really hit Chun with a jump, or whatever he tries to close in with, the only thing I can think of is if you poke him and he hits you with a level 1 on the limb.

I still really enjoy the Chun vs Sagat match, even if she did lose. The mindset + techniques applied was well worth looking at, though of course it’s always better to see her win.

Oh and I remember testing that one stomp against reversal tiger uppercut, it is safe, but he did time it very late. Although, the safe timing for it is pretty late, so it’s hard to tell. She can cross him up and leave him unable to f+roundhouse after, with her jump back roundhouse.

yeah… cr.mp has alot of active frames so it can give alot of advantage IF MEATIED.

i thought about this when the frame data first came out… didnt take it too seriously… but if she can link a cr.mk or cl.hk i think i will be taking a look at this again, because i didnt know about this moves AA properties when i first evaluated it…

-edit… it has less active frames than i thought (5) if perfectly meatied shes at +5 on hit, +2 on block.

cr.mp> cr.mk xx ex legs should hit… but probably better to go for lk xx ex legs for timing reasons.

cr.mp should also link to super if meatied versus air! (that one could be big…)!

In teh Ryu match why was Chun using lots of unlinked EX legs after dashing? Probably to get inside Ryu’s throwing range but that’s all I got.

And in the last match wtf @ Sagat bein able to do ex fireball into ultra?

Dash EX legs is a weapon my friend, beats throw/tech/jump attempts as shown.

EX tiger shot into ultra isn’t new, works in the corner. Does shit damage since he doesn’t get the full one, but it’s there.
