Nothing too special, but possibly Daigo using Chun li vs a viper player. Not great play, but thought I’d show use anyway. Also, sorry for horrible quality.
That’s not Daigo playing
stop jumpingall the time and stop using meter in all your combos. chun has nice stuff that doesnt require meter and IMO one of the better ground poking games
mistake.
Sorry

I think this was the grand finals of that tournament. Magus played really well nonetheless
Hmm. Magus had that. I honestly think he started throwing more fireballs than necessary at the end. If Vangief learns how to empty jump certain anti airs, that would be a problem.
What was i doing wrong? It’s been so long since i played a gief that I forgot all the little tricks, plus i think I was using the wrong antiairs so much that he started getting free jump ins? Idk seems to happen to me a lot. Like torwards the end it started coming together but there wasn’t enough matches left and Vance just put too much pressure on me.
Against Gief you want to be meeting him in the air with j.hp~hp, the neutral game should be “easy” enough for you to focus a lot on doing that.
You don’t want to give gief the chance to get a jump mixup on you, it’s just disaster waiting to happen.
Ya i think thats what ricky once told me too, was to use j.fp~fp, it’s just not automatic for me yet.
It’s not a catch all tho. If he knows your going to air to air him he might go with an early j.mk which beats j.fp~fp. They basically have to jump thinking you’ll try to anti air them so they do a jump late fp or mk. Chun had problems with those jumpins in vanilla but now df+lk, dash ex.ll makes jumping in tough for them. There’s a couple videos were Ricky fights Vangief makes him pay to jump. Gotta be ready for the jumpin cause you know it’s gonna happen eventually.

Hm, I think aside from anti-airing with jump fierce when you’re not being surprised you could go for more resets if he gets a knockdown. If you are in a weak position to jump forward HP, jump back HP is good and jump back mp has less of a chance to trade.
It’s up to you how much roundhouse you wanna use, but I think you could have done more. One tactic I didn’t see you use was whiffing jabs outside EX Greenhand range, occasionally. EX greenhand has poor priority after it loses invincibility so you have a very high chance of poking him out of it if you think he will psychic EX Greenhand because of Chun’s roundhouse.
After SPD - > LP Greenhand, I would explore Chun’s options especially with jump back.
LK Hasanshu will go over EX Greenhand which he will use to catch your backdash. I believe he can SPD you after you both whiff.
Jump Back Fierce will beat his Neutral Jump Headbutt, but again he will be able to SPD you if he decided to Greenhand.
Empty jump away might be a safer alternative to throwing on wake-up, possibly?
He was getting tricky with cross-up vs short-jump tics into SPD on your wake-up, but if you don’t have meter to anti-air him and you can guess when he will cross-up/short jump, focus backdash is a way to cut your losses without being knocked down again.
RBG and EX Greenhand are of course other obvious knockdowns to know both your options.
Your wakeup game vs Gief was very weak. Either you threw a fireball with no strong follow-up or you did something wildly unsafe.
There is a range and timing where you can LK hasanshu him and be safe from lariat and ultra. Sweep, dashx2 Cl. LK (whiffs but pushes his corpse to space you favorably against lariat) LK hasanshu will do it automatically for you until you can time it manually.
You could have followed some fireballs on his wakeup to put some pressure on him with dash hasanshu that would have actually hit him because those would have at least avoided ex greenhand.
Ah, Thx for the advice. Thats a really solid critique, as I went away from the match thinking a lot of what you wrote there. Especially my lack of pressure and not utilizing hazonshu in areas that it can work defensive/offensivly. I need to use backdash more too from focus attack and just as an escape, at least it can get me out of one situation here and there.
These guys pretty much covered some stuff I was going to tell you.
I played AquaSilk @ the break. He beat me in a money match in Vanilla. The damage nerf Gief got is something you have to take into consideration. They play differently, and have to kill you in more knockdowns. What I mean by playing differently, is that they don’t go for jab SPD as often anymore. They will look for st.strong, st.short into EX green hand and such more.
A safe way to approach this match, and others like Honda/Rog is to use Nemo’s “magic” roundhouse. A perfectly spaced roundhouse cannot be counter-poked, jumped, or walked into (as funny as it sounds). So if they fish for low jab/short into EX green hand, if they caught your roundhouse - the roundhouse was poorly spaced. I still miss this spacing against Honda. But I feel very comfortable with it against Rog and Gief.
Also, you’ll start to know the use for each of Chun’s buttons and when to press which. st.strong and st.fierce seem very similar, but the slightest differences allow them to be used in different situations. If you know they fish for cr.jab or short into EX green hand, st.fierce can whiff punish that much easier than st.strong. For one, it’s a frame faster. Another thing is that it feels like the hitbox doesn’t extend fully until her hand is out. So this means if you pressed st.strong at the same spot, her leg moving forward could have ran into the OS.
Anti airing game doesn’t take much to remember against Gief. I narrow it down to 3 things. df+short, j.fierces, and sweep. Sweep is pretty good, but only when they’re trying to beat out your j.fierces. j.fierce beats pretty much anything. For them to beat your j.fierce, they have to stick out their button with a guess. So you can’t really abuse j.fierce, but when you land it - it’s your most damaging anti air. So if you land this once, you can change it up and wait to sweep their next jump. Sweeping loses to empty jumps, so if he has ultra you have to be very careful about using this. So when you get in the mix of trying to figure out how to anti air Gief, you just wait and df+short him while he’s thinking heavily of how to counter your anti airs.
If you’re not in range for df+short, that means you’re walking back too far. If you’ve walked back too far, just walk up and close the spacing again. One thing to think about is when you walk up and st.strong or st.fierce, you have to walk up and wait for jumps/him fishing for OS.
That’s all I’ve got for now.
nice read walnut and magman :B
Ya definitly! That was a lot of really insightful info right there, some of it I havn’t even thought about before, Thanks guys@!
hmmm… take this with a grain of salt… but when i was still playing chun her best poke versus gief seemed to be st.fp… iirc it beat everything he does easily including: far mp, far mk, cr.lk, sweep…
gief could only consistently beat it with far lk… but chuns far lk beats giefs far lk easily… chuns far lk gets stuffed by giefs far mp.
genarally chuns far fierce is one of te best pokes in the game when taking on other standing pokes… crouching pokes… not so much. for instance chuns far st.fp beats both of dics far mk and far hk… the problem is that dics pokes are harder to wiff punish than chuns… he can wiff spam them all day, whereas chun cant really wiff spam her far fp, cause it has a good amount of recovery. chuns far fp also blanks out hondas far fp and his far hk.
but those are the most matches i use it in. also note that gief cant crouch chuns far fp like other characters can, and that his crouching normals pop him up to be hittable by chuns far fp… which is wy ive found it so good versus gief.
just watch out for that ex flat and st.lk buffered into ex flat of course.
but i haventplayed this matchup in quite some time s… yeah the metagamemay have shifted in my absence and this shit may not work as well as it used to. also a tip from shizza in the vanilla gief matchup was to use neutral jump hk against his jumpins… it works great and i dont think gief has much answer for it when spaced and timed right… but that may have changed in super.
