Chun Li Q&A Thread: Interpol Information Desk

Yeah realising I should be dashing after an anti-air s.lk is what changed it from “I get zero damage from an anti air and die if I whiff it” to “the following mixup is where I get a huge amount of my damage from”.

What about overhead, or meaty forward + HK, or AA.stlk xx Vtrigger, overhead -> combo?
I don’t know if these are ‘good’ things to do, but they are usually what I go for and they work a good amount of the time.

For the meaty F+HK the timing is strict, it’s easy for them to jab you out of it. Overhead is a gimmick that most players can react to, but feel free to use it sparingly

is there a difference between using lk iall vs mk iall out side of combo counter? Is there any reason to use one over the other? Also if I am getting lowest height iall, it should always hit crouching opponents?

I think the LK IALL has to be input slightly higher than the MK - I think this is because the LK falls down quicker?
I found no reason to use the LK version over the MK. Use HK or EX if you’re trying to meet an opponent in the air (though there’s better options for that over air lightning legs) - like MP xx LL or others.

Thanks.

I got the iall down(75%), and got the mk, cr mk xx msbk after a couple minutes of trying. I still need to grind it but i did it a couple times so my brain knows its possible, just requires effort. Is there other execution bas3d tech that I need to have down? Not situation specific stuff, but stuff that comes up quite frequently during the course of a match.

LK IALL uses better MK IALL in term of creating pressure when your opponent crouches (MK IALL hardly hit crouchers)

I can hit crouch Cammy with mk iall. Hits 2x.

I know that, but for some characters with low hurtbox (Chunli, Balrog, Bison …who always crouch block) and sometimes we can’t 100% do perfect MK IALL at perfect height constanly (even pro), then LK IALL is better option

btw, thank for your upload

Did not know chun li et al had a lower hurtbox than Cammy. Will start practice against those guys then. Also isnt lk iall negative on block?

Yes, LK IALL is -1 on block, but it still be in your advantages because it’s hard for your opponent to determine which one is LK which one is MK, and not everyone has normal with 3 frames start up. Then, most of the time they will just block after blocking IAll so you have nearly no problem doing LK IALL as pressure.

So my best strategy is to mix between LK and MK IALL, LK should be used when u meet people who tend to crouch block often.

I have no problems using MK IALL on crouchers - to each their own.

So still learning chun (grinding trying to do the BnB, ugh)

Just wondering, f.mp and st.mk seem to have basically the same range. Is there any use for one or the other in footsies? I know the mp can AA but that’s all I know.

Also is there any reason no one ever uses st.hk or b.hk to AA…ever? I know st.lk is good, but are there no situations the others are better?

And just in general, does anyone know how CH frames are determined in this game? Is it +half or maybe +2 frames of advantage?

st.mk has a little better range - I use just for poking purposes. forward or back.mp is alright to cancel into v-trigger (though I feel st.hp is best).
st.hk is just slow, and most of the time the person is too close for you to use it. b.hk should only be used when the are right above your head - it does not hit opponents who are in front of you (at all), very well - it will whiff.

Only use b.hk when they are trying to cross you up and you are not waking up.

I know nothing about CH frame data.

Also b.hk tends to trade a lot.

Also st.mk tends to stuff a lot of moves a lot better than f or b.mp. Especially against Cammy and Ryu.

Ok gotcha. Also checked the frames and it looks like f.mp has better startup and recovery so maybe that’s what they were going for.

Also, still trying to get the SBK bnb down…I assume if I try it and fail in a match even once I’ll get blow’d up for it?

Counterhit adds +2 frame advantage.

b/fwd+mp has the problem of it hitting high and the hurtbox being really wide. This makes it so that certain characters can use cr.mk to beat it clean (or more easily). When an opponent likes to use cr.mk to poke, it’s usually much better to counterpoke with st.mk (it goes over the opponent’s cr.mk, but the hurtbox doesn’t widen as much as fwd+mp, so it usually beats it clean). Although you can’t confirm anything out of it, while you can confirm EX legs/super out of fwd+mp on counterhit.

Yes, but if it’s only a casual match or online, you should just go for it anyway. You will fail, get punished, and you will learn. Until you won’t fail anymore.

Most people fail with the SBK bnb by not getting the SBK to come out…I think thats probably more likely to happen than it coming out too late and you getting punished. You will probably just miss out on some damage, most of the time?

More often than not, people miss the SBK BnB because of not getting the final SBK to come out. But it’s better to have it not come out than to come out late for a punish.

Ah, thanks for the info. Just tried chun out went 0-20 or 0-30 yesterday over the course of an hour or so and narrowly avoided splitting my controller in two. Didn’t miss any bnb’s but only because I only hit 2 or 3 buttons per round before getting double perfected. Did get blown up for jump forward j.mk or j.lk instead of air legs. I think I may have landed cr.lp xx l.hrk xx cr.lp xx l.sbk maybe twice total throughout the session.

So assuming I gather the nerve to keep playing, what should I do on defense? I lost to walk up buttons. If I hit anything I got counterhit and if I didn’t I get thrown or tech, which only reset to walk up buttons. I’m okay at footsies (i.e. bad) but am garbage at say, zangief range. I like footsie characters so I really want to stick with chun if I can.

Additionally, I found I have trouble teching knockdowns and waking up with EX sbk because I double tap directions. Should I just stop using that method altogether? I feel like it would be confusing because I still play cammy too.

Sorry for the wall, btw.
