If he goes for level 3 focus he can’t change the timing of when it’s going to come out, so you can pretty easily backdash it. Especially if he’s timing it with your wakeup then you don’t even have to time it you just have to backdash as soon as you get up.
I think you can also throw if you are close enough… at least it happens to me when I try and do a level 3 FA!
When is it good to use st.MP? I find I use st.HP with good success in poking, and I see a lot of people using st.MP. Is this for the cancel factor? Is this just because of recovery time? What characters are best to use this on? Do any stand out as being especially vulnerable to this?
Jake
st.MP has more range. Not sure about the frame advantage but it’s good to set up things like dash EX legs, dash throw, st.MP again, sweep, st.HK, and block baiting. st.HP does a bit more damage and is used when in that range.
Overall though, both are really good…I usually look for my st.HP when I want to poke around, then throw in st.MP’s when they don’t expect it and mix up. Every time I land a st.MP on block I want to be a threat.
Thing I don’t like about st.HP is that it hits a little high. There were times where chun’s fist visibly passed through the opponents head while they were crouching.
Can Ken dragon punch in between your BnB? I did a FA lvl 2, dash forward, BnB, and got dragon punched after the first C.LK. Was it just lag?
Your legs didn’t combo and he mashed DP input. It happens. Every scrub I play spams DP when they are being comboed in hopes you mistime.
st.hp has more priority and does more damage, its a frame faster but the off set is that it has less range, no cancelability, and some opponents can duck it.
st.mp has more range and therefore has more priority than st HP when outside of st.HP’s max range.
also st.mp cant be ducked, is cancelable and is plus 2 on block.
st.mp is alot easier to jump over than st HP.
the primary reasons people use more st.mp over st.hp are the increased range and inability to be crouched as well as its alot safer to focus attacks than st.HP.
in my case i like to use st.HP until i see them start to focus or crouch, then i mix in st.mp xx hasan shu or naked Hasan shu or naked st.mp (look for the FA) to ultra.
hope that helps some.
-edit i pretty much just repeated what MM said (didnt read his post)…

I do what the other guys say (backdash primarily).
You guys think it’s worth the gamble if you’re in the corner to just do vanilla SBK? it seems like the only option.
If you’re in the corner just hazanshu over them.
you can backdash in the corner also.
if you have good reactions you can buffer ultra and then input buttons on the reversal frames if they let go of the FA, but do nothing if they backdashed or forward dashed at the last second.
personally i just mixup between EX SBK and backdash and block.
regular sbk is worthless as a wakeup cause of the horrible startup plus no invincibility probably better off doing a reversal HP kikoken…they break armor as well… still makes me laugh when i get a regular sbk instead of an ex one versus a person crossing me up and i actually hit them with it.

I have always been able to throw people who attempted meaty FAs. I just don’t understand being caught by one.
At the very least, backdash or jump … If you’re airborne it sends you flying to the other end of the screen.
If you’re in a corner, reversal that shit.
the problem is that people can punish any of those options if you get predictable with them. against people who know the timing for meaty FA, wakeup throw does not work you’ll eat a crumple EVERY TIME. backdashing is punishable by canceling then poking or throwing(happens very rarely) blocking is punishable by pressure from a lvl 2 or a break from a level 3. jumping puts you in a wakeup/juggle situation if you get hit midair, EX SBK is godawful on block etc. etc.
not getting knocked down is the simplest solution, other than that just abuse backdash till they figure out how to punish, then mixup BD with EX SBK and block.
nobody out here uses meaty level 3 fas because they’re basically free ultras (cant cancel after a certain point which is easily reacted to and wakeup ultrad) instead you’ll see alot more level 2’s into pressure or crumple. lvl 2’s are still scary as hell, and cant be RELIABLY ultrad because of the ability to cancel forward dash into block (atleast not for me)

If they’re in FA stance, they shouldn’t be able to block reversals. At the very least, the moves trade, you crumple and your EX SBK sends your opponent to the other end of the screen.
But then again, I probably haven’t come across many who do know how to execute meaty FAs perfectly. Backdashing always seems safe though.
If you try to jump a meaty, wouldn’t you just get hit as though you were never off the ground anyway?
I always get tempted to jump out of blockstrings, but it just ends in me getting combo’d from the loose cr.mk->hadouken they add at the end. I should’ve added that to my bad habits -.-. If they are just threatening with a level 2 I’d consider jumping though.
backdashing is super effective. I checked to see if focus back dashing to let their 2-1 come out (jabjabjab mk xx hadoken) and then hsu over it would work, but ryu could block in time. Ken can’t if you do it fast enough. howeeever, you can focus back dash ultra ryu if he fireballs and it gives you some time to buffer and react.
Why? I’m guessing the vast majority of SF4 players are like me, and only have access to online play. I’m playing Chun right now and having a lot of fun even though I’ve only played her for a few days. Are you saying I should stop playing her if I can only play online?
It would benefit you much more to play offline. I feel that if you don’t get offline practice at least once a month…that you will never find her true potential.
She is a really disadvantaged character to use online, with input delay. Mistiming something crucial (her anti airs require good timing) costs her a lot because of her low vitality.
You may get into the habit of mashing jab/short and getting away with it, when it never works online. Most flowchart Chun players do that, and like to random hasan-shu.
Nevvermore will definately get frustrated when he runs into shoto DP spammers that get you into between your links because of input delay.
I use to upload replays from championship battles but for some reason I cant upload them anymore. The option isnt there at the end of matches. Does anyone know how to fix this so I can upload replays again?
thx for replies
