Chun-li Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

Hey I’m new and this is actually my first post ever ^^.

Anyway, I have been playing for awhile now and I think I have a pretty decent Chun-Li. However, I have a little trouble battling with another chun and el fuerte. I do good sometimes, but I usually have trouble when they start getting agressive.

Any advice? Plz and Thnx.

Hm. That’s interesting, I learned something new today. Do you have an example of something that won’t cancel into Super but can be EX Focus canceled? I know Honda’s df + HK can be EX focus canceled at any point before it hits and I don’t know if you can actually cancel it into Super, but I can’t think of anything else like that off the top of my head. Good lookin’ out though.

Quoting myself, in case someone knows the answers!

  1. “Housenka Phoenix Fan Flower”

Took me a while to find that, just searching Housenka in google gave me alot of Naruto based definitions that I wasn’t sure of, but I gathered phoenix was probably part of it. I found the translation here. S-Kill’s Blog :: SfIV FAQ. That page has alot of translations for her moves, so… that should cover nr.2 at least.

I can’t bear the English VA of Chun-Li. I think the voice is too shrill for her… but I’m probably just biased after so much time listening to the japanese style VO. Sorry I’m not being very helpful there -.-.

What are some good c.MP anti-air follow-ups? c.MP has 5 active frames which is a good meaty and you can link a s.LP, but that doesn’t happen often. The situation is a bit weird since some opponents most of the time doesn’t know what the hell just happen and it’s a bit ambiguous as to who “appears” to have advantage.

actually it would seem that i was wrong… i was basing this off of arcade knowledge and i didnt think rog could cancel his cr.hk into super… i was wrong 'cause he can… just tested it.

i always thought that what i stated above was correct though… because the frame data shows ex moves cancelable into super… which we all know in the arcade is impossible cept for the armor cancel glitches.

er, were it not for console ex moves canceling into super on infinite meter i’d still be thinking this way…

srry SS, it would seem that you didnt learn anything today and instead once again i am the student

So I just picked up Chun, I played Cammy at launch, and then some Claw, and Chun seems to be a healthy mix of both, really diggin her. The compendium thread is amazing, great for people starting out like me :).

I can get her BnB combos reliably after a bit of training room fun, still need to work on cl.st.hk->ex legs, as that still doesn’t come out properly some of the time. As I understand, this is her main punish combo, correct?

Can Chun FADC into Ultra from anything? Or combo into it easily?

I checked the combos thread as well, but what are some of Chun’s better block strings? I’ve just been mashing cr.lk with varried timing hoping to connect one into ex legs, or going in for the throw/Hasan if no luck. Is there a better option?

Any tips/tricks for someone learning Chun? Thanks

Use the piano method for getting cl.HK xx EX legs to come out.

Index on LK, middle on MK, ring on HK. Piano HK~MK~LK x2 and it should come out.

There is no FADC into Ultra.

Search for MagnetoManiac’s Mixup Guide, loose and tight blockstrings are listed there. I’m not sure if the file is still up.

Counting Frames

I’m pretty new to fighting games, and I hear and read a lot about X frames, SPD is a 2 Frame throw, blah blah blah. How are you counting frames? What does it mean if an attack is X frame start-up or something like that? I feel like I’m missing something big, but I haven’t gotten a clear enough explanation on it to really get it. Any help would be appreciated.

we dont count frames or actually see them, we memorize frames of certain important moves. like how many frames a move has of recovery if i were to block it etc. etc. if i look in another characters frame data section, i look at there most important moves and figure out whether there -frames or +frames then i just remember my characters frames and figure out if i have a move that startups quicker than theres ends after i block or get hit by it.

if i do, then that means that i can punish there move with mine, assuming i’m in range.

Okay but then how do you know how many frames a move is? That’s what I’m not getting. How are you supposed to count or whatever if you don’t see them.

Still confused.

The frame info for all of the arcade characters moves was published in some book in Japan and most of it is on the character wikis at shoryuken.com (edit: it may be in the prima strategy guide too?)

You should take a look at that.

Here’s a link to Chun Li’s fram data:

http://shoryuken.com/wiki/index.php/Chun-Li_(SFIV)

After reading that you should ask some more specific questions, and I’m sure lots of people here would help you out.

why do cr.shorts randomly miss againts dictator, its so irritating i bet thats one of the reasons the macthup is againts her

How are they missing? Is Dictator pulling off scissor kicks, headstops, or some other action. Need more info.

I think what he means is during the bnb on Dictator, sometimes one of the cr.LK’s will whiff randomly. I’ve noticed this little quirk whenever I’m in training against him.

yeah its silly cause you can do a block string on him and have the shorts randomly miss and he’ll just trow out a ramdom sciccors kick

Ok. I’ve been playing since the game came out, and I just can’t seem to win. Doesn’t matter if they have 300 or 3000 BP, it will always be close, and I always lose. I know none of you have seen me play or anything, but what the heck am I doing wrong here?

When I first started chun I had the same problem. The main way I got better was by zoning and learning some of the anti air moves she has available. People at lower levels like to pressure chun by jumping in alot and throwing out RH/HK. You need to make them think twice about this. I recommend practicing ex SBK and just your regular neutral jump RH which is incredibly effective on shallow jumps. Hope this helps

Maybe you guys didn’t see it but its cool.

Focus Attacks are a running El Fuerte’s worst nightmare… until they expect it and they change up their tactics. Just dont stay in one place, and when you knock him down cross him up. As far as I know, he doesnt have any decent Reversal moves, so when he’s down keep the pressure on him
