Chun-Li HD Remix

NICE!! :clapdos:I didn’t know that. That’s way better than Upkicks if you have meter. :badboy: Good to know, thanks skankin.

Actually, nobody gets a free throw, no matter how deep Fei lands after the Flying Kick. Not even Zangief with his 3 piano punches and 11 throw frames can beat a Flame Kick with a reversal SPD after blocking the Flying Kick. And I have tried lots. Even with Hawk, no go. But if the Fei player does nothing, then yeah…he’s gonna get backboned. It’s just the way Sirlin setup the new Flying Kick’s recovery. Just enough recovery to be unthrowable if followed by a Flame Kick, but not enough recovery to combo.

Are u absolutely sure blitz? It could be lag.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure…but hey, don’t take my word for it…try it out yourself.

hey zass not sure if you watched the stream this weekend but here is the stream of me vs DGV in losers finals

its starts at 1:05:10 around there

Oh wow thats a good match, too bad you cant see the end, who won?

I haven’t had a match with DGV in a while and he looks tougher than ever lol I like how you use the stomp to avoid being hit on your jump ins (*at least that what it looks like) I know her hit box is really small when you do that attack and I’ve avoided a lot of things where it seems I just slipped by. DGV’s use of the :lk: hurricane kick is deadly and seems to be his main weapon against Chun that and his ability to SRK all jump in attempts or combo into his super at any time.

nice match i like the use of headstomp and of SBK to get out of crossups. I need to play more against ryus.

I noticed that a lot of high-level Chun Li players don’t use tick throws. Is there a certain level that it becomes an unnecessary risk? Against the people I play I get a lot of mileage out of mixups between tick throws and low attacks.

@ Cauldrath - I might not be considered “high level” but I try not to tick so much as create situations where I can throw, like a whiffed c. :HK: or the start up of a Hadoken. Tick throws are very dangerous because they can be reversed for high damage. DGV can SRK almost any tick attempt and it really hurts lol I’d personally like to see more air throws  On that note I will tick throw without hesitation if given the opportunity

If I can get this recording software to work I’ll post up some vids (I think watching these matches win or lose helps develop strategies just as much as talking about them). I had some really good matches with EAST-1991 (a very tough Ryu player) from yesterday but the SD card seems to be corrupt and I cant transfer them over to my pc :frowning:

Tick throws are really good, but the better competition you play, the better they’ll be at reversing them or avoiding the situations entirely. The main point of a throw is to catch someone who’s turtling or hesitating off guard. In ST (and STHD), you can get away with doing them a lot against novice and intermediate players because they’re not quite as good at getting out of them. When you start playing opponents that don’t get overwhelmed by tick throws, you have to go back to throwing smart again, which means definitely not as frequently.

As Voltech said, throws are more often landed against good players by making them whiff an attack with long recovery. You should assume that they can escape a tick if they see it coming, so you need to go for a throw at a point where they can’t do anything about it.

For me ticks come down to risk vs reward. Let’s look at the risk reward on a tick on Chun Li ticking Dictactor vs ticking Ryu.

Chun ticks Dictator:
Best case: Unsoftened throw for 25%, and oki setup.
Good case: Softened throw for 5% and minor advantage.
Worst case: Eat a counterthrow (softened) for 5% and minor disadvantage.

Chun ticks Ryu:
Best case: Unsoftened throw for 25%, and oki setup.
Good case: Softened throw for 5% and minor advantage.
Bad case: Eat a counterthrow (softened) for 5% and minor disadvantage.
Worst case: Eat a dp for 15%, and then Ryu gets a crossup setup.

The worst case on ryu here is really bad. The DP damage isn’t so bad, but the crossup is like a 40% chance of immediately dying. Against top level Ryu players, I’ve gotten round losses from one crossup setup like that even if I block the jumpin correctly. I will tick sparingly vs Ryu.

Let’s now look at Dictator. Ticks are a great risk/reward benefit. The worst thing they can do is throw me back, and that’s not so bad. I will often go for repeated ticks vs Dictator.

So for me it comes down to what options that character has. That will determine how frequently I tick. Frequency of ticks is almost never zero (For me, against Zangief it’s very very close to zero), and that frequency is determined by the risk/reward chart in my head for that matchup.

 • I pulled the damage % numbers out of thin air, apologies if they are wrong. Just a basic approximation of damage.

What do you mean we don’t tick throw! Here’s a great example of that ^^ very match up Yeah thats me talking to myself O-o

What I’m talking about is more mid-combo ticks. For example, I almost always just do cr. mk xx LL after a jump-in. (One button combo!) About 25% of the time I throw instead of doing each link. Unless it’s Zangief, E. Honda, Fei Long, or T. Hawk, they can’t try to reverse without risking getting hit with the cr. mk and LLs or a cr. hk if I ever remembered to throw that out. So, reacting to the tick can be just as risky as doing the tick.

I actually enjoyed your self commentary. I learned a bit about Chun. She’s one of the characters I’ve been struggling to learn.

I have an it feels like even if I flamekick as soon as recovery ends I get thrown sometimes if I’m too close.

Whats the Chun Li vs Boxer match up strategy? Also need help with Blanka as well.

I love tick throw but when you have played against DGV so much liek I have it’s really hard to get one in… Oh yea and he’s reversals are amazing…

You want to Zone them both out esp Blanks if he gets one knock down he can tick throw you to death

I like to bait Rog into doing his rushing bull and punish him

I’ll see if I can get some vids of me doing it *edit actually I do but their game was only low to mid level, well thats my guess as i went 60 - 0 in that room lol

But it also depends on the player ie Blue Tall Cans or Afrolegends this shit don’t work lol

Ok this might not be the best example but sorry for low quality but the session lasted over 2 hours

Thank you very much Voltech, appreciate that video analysis of the match up.

Haha you’re welcome I don’t know if I give the best advice but I’ll keep trying till I get it right. I’d like to try and get some higher level matches if I can but for now I just got a bunch of randoms.

What is good to whiff punish boxer’s headbutt?
