Just came in here to say that I just noticed Youtube links are auto-embedding now and that shit’s awesome. Oh, I also hate Chun. Carry on
Funny thing about that almighty :u::lk: is that it will counter an average fei long player in HD back in Vanilla days you could spam that all day and counter fei all through the match creating him to look for the flame kick punish, but in hd remix hes chicken wing is a nightmare for chun-li…
Case in point **The Aqua Snake **open my eyes and made me hate this match up, in my opinion Besides Ryu being my hardest match in HD i say feilong follwed by T-hawk are chun’s next worst match up’s. The Aqua Snake is no average fei long player he made me hate this match so much that i even considered switching and learning one character just so i could counter him in tournament. My best counter that i have found for chun against fei long’s chicken wing is to antisapate it and hit it with a spinning bird kick it will beat it clean and its great damage. Now say you get trapped in the corner… well just sit back relax and let the mix up’s begin…

This is a video of the first time i faced The Aqua Snake in tournament, i had played him before in casuals but never really felt the wrath of fei lone until this day…lol
After this match up i went home and i had BlueTallCans just chicken wing me in the corner and tried to figure something out but any normal that i did or moved at the right distance for Fei-long would stuff me clean so my best bet was to get a reversal spinning bird kick from the corner and have it trade in the air so we could both get the knocked down then create some space for my self…
since then im 2-0 against him in tournaments but its no easy job just alot of studying lol i love and hate this match up but its always fun playing fei-long!!! Dam You Aqua Snake:lovin:
As for strategy goes i try and throw alot of fireballs in this match you will find that fei players are agressive and like to walk foward at you and anticipate one of our fireballs so they can chicken wing thru it so make them get in this pattern by throwing some fireballs and bating out the chicken But!! be sure you know your zoning just because you bait it out doesnt mean you can punish know your spacing and you can punish it as well.
on fei’s wake up chun’s meaty Palm which is her FP is a good way to make fei stop trying to reversal flame kick. Don’t always rely on this because it can be reversal but its just a good tool to keep in mind.
Use Chun’s speed to your advantage!!! Hey just because fei-long can walk fast doesn’t mean we can’s walk fast tooo use this to your advantage as chun can grab that fast little fei lol
So in my opinion in this match try and be the agressive one don’t let fei-long corner you try and be the one taking him to the ropes!!!
I think that to beat aggro Ryus, you have to fight fire with fire. Your goal is to walk up and throw him a lot, and maybe land the super if you can. To do it, though, you need to get right in their face and footsie like a champ. When rushing down Ryu, I use at least all of these moves:
-
S.Mk is good at the right range cos it beats Hadouken and Hurricane Kicks clean out of their startup.
-
S.Mp is important cos of its range and speed; it can also beat fireballs clean out of their startup.
-
S.Lk seems bad at first, but it’s the least vulnerable move of those three (S.Mp’s vulnerable box is much larger, and S.Mk recovers slower).
-
C.Mk is similar to S.Mk, but Hurricanes will whiff, and it’s less susceptible to jumps.
-
S.Hk can beat fireballs, but it’s mainly there to stuff an anticipated jump-in attempt.
-
S.Lp is an excellent thing to throw in between these moves for feints. They can trick an opponent into jumping at you, or they might bait a Shoryuken.
-
C.Lk from max range will dodge a Shoryuken, making it invaluable as a meaty in this match (keep in mind that this does NOT work on Ken).
I think of it like scoring a shot against a goalie. You know what your objective is (score a goal, i.e throw him a lot), and you know your main tools for scoring a goal (i.e S.Mp, S.Mk and C.Mk), but a good goalie is gonna be ready for that all day. To get past a good defense, you need to do things that belie the defender’s expectations and cause them to defend against the wrong things at the wrong times. You need to add some ambiguity to your offense, and that’s what all the other moves are for.
So, how does this deal with your problem?
-
It’s much easier to AA Ryu at close and mid range with S.Hk, and Neutral J.Hk when you’re setting the pace of the match
-
It’s a lot harder for him to jump when you’re in his face, giving him more important things to worry about, and
-
You can walk under his jump-ins and reset with Close S.Lp if you’re up in his face.
I think an extremely aggressive style is key in this match, but you have to pull it off verrrry well, or else you’ll be in a ton of trouble. It’s probably the hardest approach to the matchup, but it’s a lot easier than waiting for Ryu to fireball you to death, gain a crapload of meter and ruin your day.
You puzzle me, because in the video that you posted, I’m pretty sure that your :lk: beat his chicken wing every single time.
When you talk about not being able to beat it, are you specifically referring to close range chicken wing?
I need to challenge Aqua Snake, I know that you are both exceptional players so I might be missing something.
In my experience, though, Fei Long (classic or HDR) loses to Chun-Li. T.Hawk, Sagat, Ryu, and Ken (in that order) are far more formidable opponents for Chun-Li.
The problem is that, at point blank range, Chicken Wing WILL beat Neutral J.Lk and S.Hk. From farther away, those moves are boss, but if you’re cornered, you’re at a range where they will lose clean every time. So, you have to rely on stuff like Upkicking through it (very hard), hitting him out of the beginning of the Chicken Wing with a normal or Chundouken (pretty unsafe, because your move is sure to miss if he does Lk Chicken Wing), or doing an instant headstomp out of it (have fun if he does Flame Kick instead). It forces Chun to choose from a ton of really unsafe options.
I play Aqua Snake a fair amount, and to me, the match is in Fei’s favor, but not by a large margin. You have to trick Fei into jumping, and capitalize on your knockdowns. Aqua can probly testify, our matches are total blowouts - either he beats the hell out of me, or I beat the hell out of him. Whoever gets the advantageous situation first is likely to win. It’s dangerous to close the gap with Fei, but once he does (and I mean, virtually point blank range), you’re pretty much screwed.
Heh, yeah, I had edited my post to ask whether it was specifically the close range CW that is giving people headaches.
Rough. How about just jumping away, like when you throw Zangief or Dhalsim and he techs out?
Jumping back can be alright, I do that sometimes. This is probably obvious, but it’s no use in the corner, and of course, jumping back is more likely to get you in the corner. It can be pretty vicious.
I know, I know bro. I’m currently MIA. We had some really awesome sessions. = J I learned a lot about this match from your crazy ass Chun Li. Looking forward to doing it again soon.
@Milo - I used to think this match was in Chun’s favor especially with the j :lk: stuffing every CW attempt but The Aqua Snake and I put in a marathon set one day and we found that the close :lk: CW will hit Chun out of anything she throws because if it’s invincible startup. Fei’s best weapon is the corner in this match and I do everything I can to stay out. Chun needs to fight this in the middle of the room and on her terms or Fei will rape you lol I can think of a hand full of Fei players than know this match up The Aqua Snake followed by pncnTiger aka Rice247, EVO aka Embrio *sp and Sirlin These guys will give your Chun a serious workout.
@skankin garbage - I like your list of pokes and I use them often (although I’ll have to experiment with c :lk: a little more) but I always have trouble poking Ryu through his Hadoken startup because it seems like his hit box is moved back or maybe they are just stepping back out of my poking range. So every poke turns into a Hadoken right in the face The other thing I have trouble dealing with is the :lk: Tatsumaki-Senp? kyaku at close range. If I block it I can usually throw or counter it but it’s when it whiffs that I have the most trouble. I tend to do c :mp: and if it lands that I can string in a few more hits but 9 out of 10 time I get thrown or eat a SRK. Any advice on how you guys deal with these things?
This sounds like a job for SBK.
Oh wait, that has crap invulnerability, now.
LOL, just another match that Chun-Li loses now thanks to Sirlin’s ghastly nerfs.
Yeah SBK gets stuffed what I try to do is a s :mk: to catch him before the kick comes out but it leaves me open to so may other things like Fei’s cr :hp: or his rekka punch or even the flame kick. The corner is a bad place to be in this and many other matchs
@ Voltech. For the Ryu light tastu depending on the range, s. jap, c.strong, s.strong s. forward. These are ideas from the top of my head I’mma test it out and get back to you tonight. As for Fei Long I play run away and zone most the time. The CW in the Corner trap. I wait for the Roundhouse CW to walk under or the opportunity to throw out the corner, I use s. short sometimes myself but its hard because like you said Fei has a few options to exploit.
Noddin’ my head like yeah.
Especially if the opponent has air dominance (e.g. Blanka, Zangief, T.Hawk), it’s like, OK let’s try harder next round.
I am with skankin garbage on this one. Chun must put Ryu in his place if she wants to win. The last part of that video just shows Nuki getting baited like there is no tomorrow and eating a high damage meter building combo twice. The match just means nothing, like a match with a Chun guessing a fireball and applying a 3-hit-knockdown into overhead or throw ->dizzy->GGPO would mean nothing. One player was predicted and ate big damage, that’s it.
I will not question Nuki’s skill, he is a great player, but there are better Chuns out there. And better Ryus also, and it was a decisive match, there was a lot of tension and hype there. Otochun seems to beat Ryus like they are helpless against standing forward and roundhouse beating their hadoukens, jump ins and dodging their ground attacks; jump ins that always end in a 3-hit combo and often a knock down, followed by either a reversal bait, instant overhead or meaty cr.forward; walk up throws; anti-airs that beat any jump in (yes, she does have answer to close jump ins, which are jump back throw, st.rh, st.fw, walk under throw, walk under cr.fw or st.jab). When Chun gets up close, all Ryu can really do is to throw a red hadouken between her pokes for a knockdown and hope it does not get countered and throw a few pokes that lose to pretty much anything Chun has but prevent her from simply walking up and throwing him. He will die a miserable death unless she gets knocked down. From a distance, it is similar to the Guile matchup: Ryu must throw a number of projectiles (3 to 5) to revert the tide and force Chun to jump, but it can mean game over if it gets predicted. He has to often use rush punch to get at the end of Chun’s jump arc and hope for a jump in, else he is forced to block and accept the chip damage, or even eat a faster kikouken. Also, walking up and blocking at the last possible instant to reduce the gap or using SRK if she jumps helps him. Ryu wins a bit more than 50% of the matches because the damage he does when he guesses right and does a fierce SRK into safe jump, crossovers on wake up that Chun must guess to avoid and such and the number of situations it happens makes him do, in average, a bit more damage than Chun does with her dominant game. If Chun can not dominate Ryu and force him to take risks, she has no business expecting to win.
Milo, it may sound like I’m flaming you, I really ain’t, I just disagree on the Chun matchup. I totally agree with you on the SBK thing. I hate it in ST, and it isn’t any amazing or game breaking move, far from it. It is just useful, but I don’t like the Chuns I face having useful moves cos they can kill me for a single mistake as long as she is not dead.
BTW, those Chuns made a number of mistakes. As an instance, every time she gets an aerial short on Ryu and lands in range, she can combo him. As for Nuki, he was defaulting to the instant land into throw shenanigan too much and wasted a number of situations to instantly kill Ryu. He also didn’t explore Daigo’s excessive use of reversals once, nor used any instant overheads, even when it was blatant that Ryu was about to get dizzy and would block low. Other Chuns like Chamu or Otochun could have won those matches by being more consistent and using a better offensive game.
This is gold. Standing roundhouse, too, if you are close and expect either the tatsu, the hadouken or the projectile, and from the right distance it makes sweeps whiff. It is harder online, tough, but pretty much shut him down and force him to default to a hadouken after a poke of yours. Which is when you walk up and throw his sorry ass.
Am I a traitor?
yes i meant when chun is cornerd the chicken wing will beat chun almost every time
As for Ryu’s Light lick Tatsu i just use HK lighting legs to stuff it
Something I learned from NKI’s contributions on the wiki: if Ryu is alrady in mid-Hurricane Kick, S.Lk deals with it, no problem.
yea thats what I said. s.lk its a good stuffer. Great minds think alike
