I find I’m getting caught by certain moves while jamming Chun’s lightning kicks more often. The irony is that so far it seems to be by better characters than her in HD Remix like Boxer, Dictator, and Claw. :lame:
Anyone else noticing themselves getting caught by any characters more often as well? I don’t mind a little less damage and dizzy to balance out the easier mashes, but the priority really makes it worse for her in these instances instead of better. At least it’s fairly rare and hard to consistently get through to her, but it seems she gained only gimmicks at the cost of consistency.
FYI…Dictator’s longer range on Jab is better at keeping Chun off of him, too, if she’s coming at him on the ground. Her repeatable cr.fw into cr.rh footsies and fireballs don’t pin him down as well at all thanks to the new devil’s reverse. Even if you can set him up there, her new parabolic SBK (the short/only remotely worthwhile version of the move) doesn’t have the priority to reliably stuff him, and if you were attempting said footsies, you would have been holding down long enough to build up a charge, so you have to be that much more careful going for neutral j.short/fierce/rh. I never had to worry about that match in ST; in HD Remix, it’s much more cerebral. This in and of itself is actually okay to me; I just don’t like that she didn’t gain any real tools for the match, where he got nothing but significant boosts.
Someone, anyone, please tell me it’s just me and that I’m missing something. I would gladly welcome some enlightenment here.
One “plus” though…against Sagat, her short ground SBK does go through his fireballs if you time it late like her super. Bonus damage if he responds by trying to counter with tiger knee, heh.
I notice it with Dictator and Claw, but not Boxer so much (although I wouldn’t doubt it). I don’t care much about the damage, dizzy, or comboability - I never used Lightning Legs for damage, anyways. The priority thing is lame, because now Claw can sometimes just poke you out of Lightning Legs, or if you somehow get Dictator to do a Psycho Crusher at your Lightning Legs, there’s actually a decent chance you’ll get hit out of it (I’d say it happens 1/4 times to me).
I don’t know, I don’t personally have these problems. The Devil Reverse doesn’t even put him in a great position if he gets out of your rush down, and you can mitigate the possibility of him escaping your rush if you do S.Mp instead of C.Mk, which I think more Chun players do anyways. Oh, and also by not trying to pin him down with fireballs.

The devil’s reverse thing is more of an escape reset if he feels really trapped; he still has the option to just scissor kick over my cr.fw if he reads me right. The situation you described with rushing down strongs is the exact scenario that caught me off-guard earlier against Dictator; on the approach his jab is long enough to keep her back, which makes throw attempts have to come from a little farther back and therefore easier to respond to. You can still keep pressure on him well, but he has a lot more he can do to respond if your opponent’s aware.
At least I have a few good things to try out with Dictator against Chun-Li’s rush, right?
I suppose it’s true that he can throw out just about any move if you’re too far away to repeat it. But, that’s why you can throw in random C.Hks; if he tries anything funny (like S.Lp), he gets tripped and you get to start messing with him all over again.
It has decent priority, so it can be an effective anti-air if you anticipate a jump-in.
It juggles now, so you can do things like SBK / Super, or, at certain distances from the corner, you can do super and juggle with SBK for comparable damage to her old super with upkicks.
What we lost:
Much worse as a means of escaping crossups
(Unconfirmed?) Less invulnerability on startup? I don’t know if this is the case, but it’s a reasonable deduction; ST SBK had 16 frames of invulnerability, and HD SBK’s startup is shorter.
MK and HK now unsafe on hit and block against a grounded opponent.
So basically, SBK sucked before, and it sucks now. It just sucks in different ways…although I preferred the ST one, because I liked the crossup escape.
I’m pretty sure you can hit crouching opponents with it, but I haven’t seen (nor have I been able to come up with) any practical applications for it. You can use it to cross over fireballs, but this move is also unsafe on hit, so it doesn’t seem like it’s a very safe thing to do.
No, and it didn’t in ST either. However, the cooldown is invincible (ST Air SBK did not have invincible cooldown, but I think the normal version did).
I was playing MAEJI 1984 last night (my Claw vs his Chun), and he used the insta air SBK (towards) against wall dives. He only did it once so I don’t know how reliable it is but it may be worth investigating in that match.
I’ve been hit out of the normal SBK too. I think in general, it’s not a very useful move against Vega’s wall dives, or really just against Vega, like, ever.
Psychic bird kick is better than most people think. a lot of players try to take advantage of chuns great weakness wich is a lack of options for anti air.
I find this mostly usefull in the Blanka and Zangief matchup , a lot of charachters try to punish chun by geting right on top of her and really use jumping to move forward way to much. psychic bird kick will juggle them right out of their jumping towards you attempt.
it will also work great from time to time on unpatient vega players… who think that chun is helpless once they walldive her enough. Just get in the corner and psychic birdkick them to mix up your game from time to time.
im working on a list of wich charachter chun juggles with the upkick after the super. (1-hit)
and also wich charachter she juggles in the corner.
I started this way back but never got around to finishing it. i only finished who she could cross up. wich is acctually everyone now.
ok dont let this charachter tread die !!! remember Chun is a good charachter there should be plenty of discussion on how to improve your game with her.!!!
I was wondering if anyone would like to share their thoughts on the following matchups. Fei Long , T.Hawk , Vega. I think theese three are the hardest by far 7-3 in chuns disfavour. Any strats tips generall info would be very much appriciated.
Hey Skankin, can you elaborate on why you think chun beats hawk? In my opinion, this is one of her worst matchups. But it’s very possible that I’m playing it wrong.
