Chun Li General Thread: Blue Jade

If she still had her head stomp and legs stuff she’d be in a tier above her own completely, but you have characters like Necalli that get more damage from longer range fierce normals on CC AND have a command grab. Having a command grab near the corner just makes you so terrifying in that position. It will really come down to if with the mechanics and EX spinning bird that she can keep herself out of the corner and danger. EX Spinning bird is one of the best metered reversals in the game though, so I doubt she’ll have the hardest time. She’s in the high to top tier but the tiers in this game minus Ken are relatively close together (or appear to be at the moment).

Chun 's buttons are much more versatile. Besides her s. Hk is amazing vs the big characters and necalli can’t get max damage unless he’s really close because it involves a walk forward (whereas Chun can get max damage from a dash).

Notice you said ‘against the big characters’. That is 3 of 16. st. HK from Necall is better for those other 13 and just because day 1 people are having a harder time walking forward then dashing doesn’t mean the walk forward is impractical yet. I’d defend in the majority of matchups Necalli st. HK > Chun st. HK.

Chun still has the best CC though with b. HP.

I’m not talking about the difficulty of the walk forward, just that it won’t work unless you’re within half the max range of s hk. At max range all you get is lp slash and a bit closed than that you can do CR. Mk XX whatever.

Either way that’s the only button necalli has. CR. Mk is really slow. Not a big fan of his ground game.

Chun’s b.hp CC is actually one of the worst though…

you have to spend meter on ex legs to do anything with it, which even then is suboptimal compared to a normal non-CC punish.

Punishing with CC st.hk is also somewhat character dependent, I had it go over recovering shoryus multiple times because they duck down in the animation while recovering. By day 3 of last beta, I was just doing cr.hp starter punish.

You can os hk legs or do CR. Hk if your execution is not up to par.

B.hp is not meant as a cc punish, it’s a frame trap monster (plus on block, relatively fast) with good hit box. Only character that can compete with that is bison.

Can’t you V-Cancel into her V-Skill - stomps - EX air legs from CC b.hp as well? I thought you could, using the V-Trigger OS is super nifty for getting that.

No it’s actually one of the best. Not every CC is meant for heavy damage conversion. There’s diversity in what each one is meant for. It would be stupid OP if she could get more than HK or EX legs off of it. It has a disjointed hit box that stuffs most of the standing normals in the game and gives her half a V Gauge. She has a 2 bar V Gauge so getting closer to Renkiko is good enough.

It’s also plus on block in a game where very few CC’s are plus on block.

Chun Li S tier huh? Well see.

S+ my nigguh. Let me live my thick thigh dream just a little longer.

Gosh.
I go and play Rashid instead. This character is getting boring.

I play Chun here and there in Third Strike, I don’t play her at all in 4, but she looks fun in SFV, I’ll definitely try her out when I get it.

Only works in the corner in my beta build

I hit it during a match in beta 3, it was probably corner and I just thought it was full screen. I’m not on the cracked beta unfortunately.

5 active frames too. Go ahead and stick your hand in there, it’s safe.

You should try using it vs. Dhalsim. You could beat that character with literally nothing but b.hp I swear. Come to think of it, I probably did.

As far as chuns high versus not so high ranking, I think it’s a tale of 2 chuns:

With v trigger activated I think she’s an s-tier character if currently in your face. With v trigger activated from far or no v trigger activated, I feel like against every other non v trigger activated character, Chun is high mid or low top.

She’s a character that relies on her v trigger pop to get her stupid stuff. She’s still great with non v trigger, but she has damage issues, and pressure issues when outside v trigger.

She’s probably at her single most scariest when she’s in normal mode with a full v trigger bar, because then she has access to to v trigger pop which allows huge anime combos and crazy anime pressure from the pop.

It is chuns basic “goal” to v trigger ASAP via a punish into pop, or a blocked normal into pressure. Chuns that aren’t playing her this way IMO aren’t playing her correctly.

Woshige was popping v trigger with her and ken every chance he got. He even had an answer for players that like to jump away from chuns v trigger:

Blocked Cr.mp xx v trigger, f+mp.

The f+mp hit combo fined trying to jump away and put a decent amount of damage on him. After that combo just kinda basically sat there and ate all that pressure more times than not.

Tldr:

There’s 2 separate characters when it comes to chun that people might be talking about… V trigger versus non v trigger.

I saw Justin do c.MP xx V trigger also.

???

I wasn’t implying that woshige was the only person doing it. I think most chuns have been doing it since awhile ago maybe even before woshige did it. Just saying that I think that’s how the character is supposed to be played.
