Yeah it’s a strong move, but I can’t say I’ve had much trouble dealing with it (sounds like more of a Vega problem) and I’m not willing to give up my B+HP just so other characters can lose theirs.
I don’t think you guys got the point of the video. Af0 argues that safe normals shouldn’t have the ability to lead into such damaging combos. The video is clearly dramatized, but I don’t think that’s a particularly radical assertion. I also don’t think he would cite Chun’s b+HP as an example of an overpowered CC because, while plus, it both is extremely short ranged compared to most CC’s and will never lead into anything more than legs or sweep.
That said I don’t think CC’s are the only, or even main, obstacle for footsies characters. I haven’t played previous SF games so I may have a different perspective, but weak anti-airs (why exactly can light air-to-airs leave you minus?), the difficulty of reacting to dashes, and v-triggers are bigger detriments imo. Cammy has terrible crush counters, but her cr.HP xx v-trigger is no less scary.
Safe on block, but not safe at all on whiff and the fact that these moves are in the double digits on startup does account for something. The likelihood of getting CC’ed mid range for any other reason than being bad with spacing is very low.
I’m still in favor of input delay being reduced so whiff punishing them becomes even more viable if they’re not careful, but personally I’m not bothered by the payoff if they happen to shatter glass because I know I can make them pay for it on whiff as is (and usually take my turn or get a quick punish on block). I still think he’s exaggerating a bit much and it’s more of a problem area for some characters fighting against it than others.
I think the move is fucking fine and this guy is a scrub.
March 1 - happy bday :3 :3 :3
Oh yes! A very happy birthday to our queen (my waifu), and the immortal, iconic, and wonderful Chun-Li. May she continue to kick ass for years to come

I haven’t played vs other players in a while, but i did some training mode practice today and got about 70% accuracy doing double dash->c.LP versus Bison random wakeup waking up with reversal s.LK (3 frames); getting meaty throw would be a bit harder (bigger start-up, less active frames) and reacting to other wake-ups could be harder too. Even then, i think players better than me would have higher accuracy on reaction to different quick rises.
I started using delayed attacks (st.MP, cr.LK in vt) and I can already see how much scarier my pressure is. Last season I relied heavily on air legs, which is obviously not really an option anymore. Unlike a shimmy a delayed attack allows you to keep up the pressure even if your opponent blocks, which is really strong against characters without reversals/meter.
I have a friend who just got the game and he decided that he wants to use Chun-Li. I tried to guide him toward going with Cammy instead but he is liking Chun-Li and that is who he wants to play.
Now, What can i teach him with Chun that will help him in his rookie days. I told him about the normals, anti-airs and the general gameplan. What are the top priorities that will help him against the army of Kens and such at the very bottom levels.
It will probably be demoralizing for him to play solid when others don’t understand or give a shit about that.
Well, you introduced him to her normals, which are very good mid-rage tools for her. So that’s a good start. At least he knows that Chun is a high mobile but a very technical character. If he understands that her higher damaging combos and BnBs are gonna take practice, then he should be fine.
When it comes to battling Shotos, especially the fireball spamming ones, urge him to not get frustrated. usually, figuring out the patterns and reads will come with practice and experience. But if he decides to stick with Chun-Li, even though the tough stretches, then I’m sure he’s gonna enjoy it.
Here are some vids you can show him to help him get started. Granted, some of these are S1 Chun-Li, but I feel the concepts are still the same.

In the low ranks if you play solid you’ll win. If he gets to gold or platinum eventually that’ll be a decent sign that his fundamentals are ready. It’s not even about characters until he reaches platinum at the minimum
Lol GO1 even went to Guile in Final Round. Chun is dead folks. Let’s move on.
Hard to know who to move to when they haven’t announced the patch yet.
Chun might get some buffs… guile and urien and rog might get nerfs…
Chun will be alright. She just falls into the weaker part of the new meta where offense is strong again. It’s like what happened from Super SFIV for AE where characters like Yun/Yang/Makoto get OD as hell with the new changes and other characters get left behind.
The quickest way to make Chun good again is to just buff back up her offensive tools to be in line with the more offensive meta, but they may just normalize the offense of the other characters to keep the game less momentum heavy/boring whichever.
Thanks for mentioning the Final Round. Didn’t know it was going on. Yeah, Chun not looking good - GO1 was painful to watch - but that’s been said here earlier so it’s not really a surprise. Announcers actually stating they don’t like the character at all and liking her getting beat up was just the cherry on top of the cake. Interestingly, no Uriens or Balrogs in the Top 8 - can’t say I’m particularly surprised by that. One Laura managed there, but let’s see how that goes. Kind of weird how little relevance the online rank has with the actual tournament results. I do sort of like seeing Ibuki there at the top!
Well, I can’t contest your experience here when the last fighting game I played more regularly was One Must Fall 2097. My question is how can you learn the fundamentals with Chun when she doesn’t reliably anti-air without meter? On the other hand, if you can anti-air with her, you probably can with every character. I just don’t see it happening with 2.01 Chun, not even by pros.
I share your optimism that it’s likely that Capcom will get her get back on the line after the Final Round. So let’s see the patch before going any further.
There’s a high tier character named Karin that is built around poor AA so it’s possible. Karin can still teach you fundamental even with weak grounded AA. If anything characters like Chun and Karin show you how to improvise and go air to air and such. Even in SFIV she was known for having difficult to utilize AA so SFV was an outlier where she could hit one button for 90 percent of AA situations.
In the beginning it’s more about training yourself as a player than the character you use.
With that said, yeah we’ll see about this patch
Chuns lk AA is still good. It won’t AA some of the more BS jumpins in the game, but neither will other AA’s.
Announcers tend to be lower level high level players… I’ve found that high level players don’t like Chun because they think she takes no skill because all she is is unfuckwithable buttons. And the fact that she’s been top tier in a few games and is always despised when top tier.
People don’t like Chun because she exposes their bad footsies and makes them feel like they suck.
People don’t like mixup characters because they expose players bad decision making and defense.
Don’t expect Chun to really get a fair assessment ever. People will either say she’s ass or broken, there is little in between for most players expectations.
So people hate when Chun is good because she is honest but also hate when mixup characters are good ?
