Chun Li General Thread: Blue Jade

I just picked Chun back up. She feels decently fine as far as AA goes. St.lk still works fine for me.

But her old weaknesses just feel even worse, and her fireball nerf is so fucking bad I just don’t know.

But bhp as a frame trap is still nice. Cr.lk,st.lp xx ex legs is decent and one of the easiest 2x weak attack confirms in the game. St.hp is still pretty damn good.

Her worse attributes are still there though. Basically no real approach options outside of dash and walk and jump, none of which are great.

I guess I might need to bite the bullet and start to try to incorporate dash x2 shenanigans into my game.

And her shit throw range is still a huge point of contention.

Other than those things though she’s still pretty good, surprisingly. But she’s not good in the way she need to be. She needs a better approach option or a better way around fireballs or a better throw range where she can tick without having to walk forward after the button.

There’s nothing else to talk about. All we’ve got now is the bitching. There might be a few more cute tricks with her new V-trigger stuff, but beyond that there’s little new things to discover or talk about. So I default to bitchin’ till something more interesting comes along.

Am I the only one who feels that canceling B.HP into fireballs feels really weird right now ?

Also something that has been bothering me lately is air legs. Back during season 1 i would do them manually on the P2 side and my natural timing on that side would give me a good height on air legs. I would do Air legs doing QCF, UF, DF +K method on the P1 side as i couldn’t get a good rhythm from it manually.

For some reason since Season 2 started i am never able to do a good manual air legs anymore, doesn’t matter which side and i am talking about the medium kick version here. I am now forced to do it with the shortcut method on both sides which bothers me since the input is annoying to me, especially on the P2 side. I have the SBK combos down 100% and even st.LP / st.LK into SBK combos but air legs is still a struggle. Whenver i go messing around with other characters then return to Chun, my execution with air legs gets worse by like 60% or something. I have to go to training and do air legs drills for like 20 minutes each time i go back to Chun again.

Did they change the height restriction or anything on it ?

It’s possible they changed it. Which would suck since the move requires you more than ever to input it precisely due to it being punishable on block or whiffing crouching opponents if performed slightly too high.

What’s the Kolin matchup gonna be like?

i wonder if we will be able to deal with her double jumps…

As far as i know there were no changes to Chun’s iaLL height restriction.

Any hope for Chunli’s buffs in this balance patch???

Nope, hope they don’t nerf her harder.

One of chuns best strings seems to be cr.lp,bhp I’ve been using it for a long time.

It’s a semi decent frame trap on block with an easy cc confirm on the bhp. It’s plus on block. And the string combos on counterhit.

So it basically does a little bit of everything.

Doesn’t trap fast mashed jabs though, but cr.lp,st.mp does that pretty well.

Cr.lp,bhp, bmp seems like an all around good pushout string. If you have them good reactions then you can confirm the bmp on CH into legs.

But there’s still a gap for delay teching to be used all day in there. So what I want to experiment with next is:

cr.lp, walk forward CH st.mp,bhp confirm.

I’m away from the computer though so I don’t know if st.mp will even leave Chun in range for a bhp.

All the pushback on chuns lights might actually be usable as well. If we start to use her lights as a pushout.

Chun has one weakness in this game she also had in sf4:

She doesn’t have a good ranged 5-6 frame high priority normal.

This makes it hard to gain proper respect when inside chuns fmp range but outside her jab range. This is a spacing she tends to get abused at in neutral or during other characters pressure.

Best thing she seems to have is cr.mk but its negative, and at 6 frames it’s a frame slow to compete with the nice 5 framers in the game.

-edit

Ch st.mp,bhp doesn’t connect on standing opponents.

But ch st.mp, cr.hp xx vtrigger, v skill stomp x 3,jhk juggle with super does. (463 damage)

Probably rehashing old shit here… but oh well. I don’t see anyone really using this and it seems like a good flowchart for a more optimised pressure based Chun:

Start with cr.lp,st.mp

If EITHER hits, combo into cr.mk xx KD.
If it’s blocked then:

BMP looking for the CH. if it CH, confirm into ex legs

Once you’ve got that entire string down plus all the confirms (it isn’t easy by any means but it is doable)

Start to mixup cr.lp,st.mp (blocked) forward walk st.mp confirm into cr.m xx KD.

That’s the basics flowchart.

The last fmp after the st.mp is basically a 4 frame gap so your fmp will beat all moves that aren’t mashed 3 framers (and it might even beat those since fmp will be out of range)

If we can get this offense down it gives us the best chance at real pressure and damage, but it isn’t easy by any means.

If you decide to practice this put the computer on random block and random CH and have at it. You “lose” if you

do a cr.mk after a blocked st.mp
Do an ex legs without a confirm
Miss a CH fmp> ex legs link.
Fail to confirm a st.mp into cr.mk xx KD

Goi 0-3
Nuki 0-3

Topanga league start isn’t so shiny for Chun li. Lets see if MOV has an answer.

To deal with double jumps, do double the anti-airs.

Sounds silly, but this is commonly how I dealt with Oro in SF3 and deal with characters in anime fighters. Your AA usually recovers before they can come down with and attack and you can usually get another one out fast enough to beat whatever they do.

Now if Kolin has a special divekick or the ability to throw an air projectile in addition to that, then it might be a different story.

Both of them got wins after that thankfully. They were 3-2 wins so not that good of a win but it is something.

Oh damn i watched next MOV match that went 0-3 so i just went to sleep, couldnt watch anymore. Gotta check if there is upload on YT or smtn

Did you guys ever got to actually use Fireball VTC combo in a match ?

I don’t ever remember seeing this situation happen with me or with any footage i have seen for S2 Chun thus far.

cr.LP (CH), cr.MK xx HP Kikoken (VTC), dash up st.MP, cr.HP xx HK SBK does 266 damage and 444 stun. Maybe I should work on confirming that instead of just doing the gold ol regular cr.LP, cr.MK SBK when i have VT.

I only ever see filipinoman use it every now and then in ihs matches against stupendous. I’ve used it maybe 3 times since the new patch dropped but it always ends up the same. The same being that it’s just safer and more beneficial to go with the old tried and true punishes most of the time. At least for me. It’s getting hard to break old habits and I can’t get over the damage thing to hype myself up to do some of the newer punishes. I also find the timing of the VTC after the kikoken to be a bit tight.

You can do VTC, dash up into b+HP, cr.MK xx HK SBK for 281 dmg 474 stun.

From what i’ve seen Humanbomb is the only pro player to incorporate new V-Trigger Chun stuff into his gameplay.

I am so freaking fed up with all of the " Oh Chun is fine. She is still amazing " notion.

As a matter of fact , I am worried about this upcoming patch since it could lead to the rise of the characters that Chun does well against now leading to Miss Li being dead last and a proud bottom tier character.

Now I am fine with playing a low tier or a low mid tier character but for fuck sake stop being sheeps or parrots that only keep repeating shit without actually thinking about it. One of the sheep today is actually convinced that Chun is the best character in the game after Urien. This Chun being number 2 to Urien LMAO.

That person is convinced that me losing a set with the character I have been playing for a year doesn’t mean she is bad when my 10 minutes Cammy could destroy him without him taking a single game in 3 different sets. Then he says " Oh Cammy is strongly but she is only OK If you have a reversal."

Fuck man.

When idiots drink the koolaid they become more idiotic.
Season 1 Chun was just a bunch of koolaid drinking motherfuckers.

Had to here shotos whine about Chun in season 1 now we have to hear them whine about bad shotos in season 2.

It’s tragic how bad the fgc has become with people unwilling to experiment outside their character to see the game for what it really is, not just what it’s like in their neck of the woods.
