Chun Li General Thread: Blue Jade

Is the air stomp a legit combo at times or just a pressure string?

Pressure string. It’s to cover IALL from wake up buttons and catch people autopiloting throw tech.

Assuming you mean headstomp into airlegs. It’s -1 on block, but the instant overhead is almost a guaranteed hit. So… yeah. It’s pretty good. Also, not everyone has a 3f jab. And not everyone knows you’re doing light airlegs which is -1 instead of medium which is +1 (you use light, cause medium goes over the opponent if your headstomp is pointblank). So they usually don’t contest it, cause they don’t want to get counterhitted.

It combo’s on counterhit into a full combo though, if you execute it perfectly.

Combo on counterhit.

The worst shit ever is throwing someone, them being barely out of range, then you get thrown out of your throw animation when all they were doing was trying to tech.

The throw game in sf5 is garbage and by default makes the rest of the game garbage, fun garbage, but garbage nonetheless.

So I have a question I have ran into a wall in skill. I am triyng to improve my neutral game. I findthat a bunch of characters seem to be able to push me in to the corner. While in the corner I start to get pressued hard. I want to ex sbk but they are trying to bait it out many times they will run up to me and do nothing. Run up to my and Jump which is so ugly because if I respond to them running up and I ex sbk imeadiately I eat a full jump in combo. alternatively if they block I eat a CH combo into basically the same thing. However by trying to not use it htey opens me up to getting shimied and and getting grabbed. So i’m basically stuck. I want ot be more aggressive. However Chun li with no charge loses alot of her utility. At a close range her anti-air become really gimicky and often I trade and lose or lose completely. Then the’yre is times where I’m holding down back and people try to cross me up and I ened up losing my charge. I can’t pull out IALL at a moments notice or anytime I feel like it so I can’t een consider that a option since I cana barley do it sometimes. Then that leaves her normals which people start just running away from me.

You posted your vid on the Saikyo Dojo section right? Sorry for not noticing. I’ll try and watch later. I have to help the other guy with his stuff first.

So srly? Does ChunĀ“li have troubles with anything at all? 3 frames jab, ex invencible special, stupidly good air to airs, instant ā€œdive kickā€, goldy anti airs, probably the best normals in the game and a decent fireball (it’s really good tbh)

No matter who you play, you will probably have a really really bad mach up.

Any tips for a general gameplan?

One really good gameplan is to stop complaining and acting like a victim, probably.

If you’re using Ryu (I thought you said you were, but maybe I’m dumb), ensure that she does not get close. If you can do that, you’ve won. If she gets close, keep calm and respect her pokes (st mk for instance). Try to score knockdowns and use them as opportunities to pressure her. Other than some very slow options, she can’t reliably get around a well-placed fireball. Keep that in mind and try to exploit it.

Your j lk beats or at least trades with most of her anti airs, especially when done early. It’s a pretty unique move that she has trouble dealing with.

Also, most times that you block or are hit by IALL, it’s your fault. Just react with st mp or cr hp (or even mp srk) whenever she does it, or even whenever she leaves the ground. If you whiff a st mp because she was actually going for a normal jump (which she shouldn’t do), you still have time to srk her.

Nothing that you said works, not agains a decent player. She’s gonna get in and she’s goona combo you down. You can’t trade with j.lk no matter what you say. She’s just way too good, she doesn’t have any downside.

Zone her? for what? You frist have to have a health lead, and you won’t have it couse you can’t get close to her. Fireballs don’t work, jump, IAL, cr.mk, v skill, are a few ways to avoid fireballs and close th distance you need to close.

She just needs nerfs especially in her frame data. Her light attacks should be 4 frames, not 3.

Thanks for teaching us how to beat Ryu with Chun. We needed the help. Have a great day now.

Ttyl

You’re right, even her bad matchups are 6-4 in her favour. She completely dominates the entire cast. That is why she wins every tournament and top 8s usually have 5-6 Chuns in them.

It seems like he’s just here to complain.

Or to troll.

No. What he said is true. Stop trying to defend your character like everything is a troll. He might or might not be, but the truth is everything he’s said is reasonable, all the things he’s said chun is good at… She is good at.

@comebragas

A decent gameplan against chun is to outplay her with your fireball/footsie/dash game.

If you rely on any one of those things to much chun will get in and destroy you if you are bad upclose.

If you rely on footsies she will win cause she outpoked you. If you rely on fireballs and jump back only she will corner you or vskill over your fireballs, or cr.mp under your fireballs, if you dash to predictably she will beat them with her pokes.

You have to take advantage of ryus advantages in the matchup:

He’s more versatile than chun in certain areas. He can backdash and immediately throw a fireball, chun can’t. This makes his backdash or jump back game, better at neutral. Abuse that. Use your parry at times of small disadvantage like after chun blocks your fhp. If the chun is super button happy use sweep to beat most of her pokes.

If you can get semi close to her while she doesn’t have charge, use your crossup against her as her ability to deal with crossups is less good than her ability to deal with regular jumpins.

Once you’ve got her respecting your close range hp fireballs thrown in her face, you can start doing dash throw/dash jab stuff. Use lp fireballs when near fullscreen distance so you can follow them if she neutral jumps over them so you can pressure her on the way down. Use close range hp fireballs to hit her out of her pokes and dash ins and forward walks.

After you backdash from a good range, it’s a good look to use fhp to hit her if she’s an aggressive chun that is walking/dashing forward everytime she sees you move backwards.

The neutral tends to go to the better player. Chuns upclose game is slightly better than ryus, but ryu has more damage. All in all its a tough match for both characters as chun has troubles dealing with ryus all around effectiveness and ryu has problems dealing with chuns pokes and anti fireball options.

I don’t think that guys a troll. I think there are different ways to complain constructively, and this guy isn’t doing it well imo. Going into a character forums and whining isn’t productive and people are starting to respond in kind. When someone gives you tips, you don’t just say…

ā€œI don’t care. None of that’s gonna work,ā€ then just start rattling off all the pros (Chun) of your problem match up. Why bother? We all know how good a character Chun is. That’s got shit to do with how you ( i.e. that poster) needs to approach the match up. She might be nerfed one day, but one day aint today yet so he needs to deal with that and move on. He seems to have a defeatist attitude already and seems very unwilling to listen to any tips people in this thread have tried to give him. He’s too bitter about Chun’s strengths to get past that and do what he’s gotta do.

True, but ā€œstop complaining and acting like a victimā€ is pretty crap advice as well on a discussion forum. It’s pretty obvious that ONLY complaining will not get anyone anywhere which is why he didn’t just complain, he also asked questions on a discussion forum, probably while still heated from some chun beat down. Try to understand people is all I’m saying. Motherfuckers aren’t robots and do have emotions that they sometimes need to express.

Stop complaining and acting like a victim wasn’t advice anyone on this forum gave him. It was a response after he completely dismissed every single piece of match up advice people gave him. Sorry, he may still be smarting, but no one’s trying to console you or help you if that’s how you’re gonna act. People aren’t going to waste time to help you if they don’t think you’re listening or are going to be receptive to it. Maybe if he calms down people will be more receptive again like they were initially . As a matter of fact, I had actually typed up a response about some tips that I though would be helpful for him, but again, seeing his response, I just thought to myself, "Why bother?. He isn’t in the right head space to hear it now.

And maybe it’s just me. but I think it’s dumb to go into a character forum and complain about said character’s strengths. Most people there know the strengths of their characters. Why waste time listing/complaining about them? I’d save that stuff for general threads. I have problems with Necalli, Cammy, Ryu and Mika, but I’m sure as hell not going to their forums and complaining about them and then in the next breath asking for help. I’d just say I was a Chun main looking for some matchup advice. But thats just my opinion and it’s a free country and discussion board. People can do what they want. It’s no big deal and I’m already over it. I hope he is too.

Besides, he’d do better to show us some of his vids vs. Chun. I think that would tell us a lot more, as vids don’t lie while words and opinions can be a little too loose and fluid. There’s always something you could have done better. The way he talks, you’d think it was 9-10 matchup. It’s not that unwinnable.

I feel like there should never be strong characters in any game. Theres always someone who complains…
