Made quite a bit of progress today with Chun Li through the last couple of matches I had.
Calmy approaching the opponent works a lot, even if they are trying to bulldoze their way through everythingā¦
Alright I dont have the matches I originally had saved on my buddyās PS4. He uploaded these to youtube though and I just found out about it. These are also games that I won, but I feel like there are enough mistakes in these for critique from other Chun players. Like I said before I played Chun casually in previous games, but I just get caught up sometimes in some weird limbo between SF4 and 3rd Strike Chun. SF5 Chun is a weird in between. Charge characters arent really my main choice but until Juri comes out Chun is the only one Iām comfortable with right now. Though I will say that I havenāt been able to find any good setups to sneak in her overheads.
Be brutally honest. I fucked up a lot in these two matches. The first one starts part way through the first round for some reason. Iām the default outfit Chun(itās a mirror match). Second game is against a Ryu on my budās favorites list who apparently mainās Rashid.
Stop jumping like a drunk monkey, for starters  :looney: If youāre going to take to the air, itās usually: V-Skill, or air legs, or to antiair. Not Juri, you aināt gotta keep on jumpinā thereās no divekick to gain after that  You mention SF3 and SF4 Chun-Li, but you seem to forget theyāre most known for solid, oppressive ground game/footsies and not really for jumping around. SF5 Chun also has good pokes. Use them⦠well, use more than just c. mk.
I saw no attempts to anti-air from both Chuns as well. c. mp and sweep are hella punishable on block too, so be careful about that.
Game rewards standing on your feet and hitting buttons more than IV did. Which earlier games like 3S and CVS2 also rewarded you heavily for those things.
it doesnāt hurt that she basically has a dive kick thats better than any dive kick ive ever seen in a sf game lol. I played Yang a lot in 4 as well and I could only wish for something this strong for him
Thatās why I said I played her casually in those games. I mained Yang in 3S.
Most games I have been using her far reaching fierce and roundhouse to get some good range but usually only to follow with a fireball. I donāt do it as much against some characters. I use it more often against Cammy and Nash.
The main problems I already know though are definitely breaking the ājab jab follow upā stigma from 4, and I donāt have any optimized damage output. Only combos I got with Chun right now thatās longer than two inputs is cr.lp>st.mpxx Medium Legs. I still donāt have my own PS4 so Iāve just been playing when I can which results in almost no lab time.
I havent really gotten much use out of Vskill either. Sometimes I catch people with stomps into EX Legs after it but thatās rare.
I donāt know what her good anti air is either up close. I know I got standing roundhouse for a certain distance, which I use against Zangief and Nash a lot, but I donāt have anything for when someone is right above me similar to Sakura/Juriās crouch fierce.
As for sweep thatās something Iām still trying to get rid of. Iāve gotten used to people on ranked not doing jack shit about it so Iāve gotten a little complacent with throwing out sweep haphazardly.
You can actually use V-Skill more than your regular jump. It has a hit so they sometimes wonāt contest that, and it puts you out farther than a regular jump would. You just have to be conscientious about its use.
jab jab throw is still good in SF5  jab jab medium punch frame traps are good for her in this game
also.
Anti airs: s. :lk: (all purpose, think Juri far s. mk plus you can dash walk shenanigans after it hits), + :hk: for certain angles, EX bird for obvious jump ins. She doesnāt really have a vertical up AA like a shoto c. hp, so aside from s. lk you will sometimes have to know and vary your AAās when needed a la SF4.
also AA:
j. :hk: (mostly neutral but back + :hk: a la SF4 sometimes works too), air throw, j. :hp: and j. :mp: also work in certain situations
:hp: and :hk: pokes are good, though from my exp :hk: is more for bigger characters like Zangief.
Also in regards to the jumps Iām usually fishing super hard for air grabs. Once I land about 3 of them in a match it grounds the other guy almost entirely for good. The cr.mp is sometimes a psychic counter to fireballs. I do use them on reaction but if I do it and there isnāt already a fireball on screen, I was expecting one to happen lol.
I am not a good player by any means, but wow she feels great to play. The pianoing was an execution barrier for me, but now sheās my favorite character and by far.
